About Hunan Garden
Hunan Garden, located at 5241 Mission Oaks Blvd in Camarillo, CA, is a Chinese restaurant that offers takeout and potentially dine-in services to the local community. As a participant in the platform's Chinese Restaurant category, Hunan Garden has received mixed feedback from recent customers, with some praising the food and service while others have reported deeply concerning experiences regarding hygiene, management, and customer treatment. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview based on the available reviews, highlighting both the positive and negative aspects to help local users make informed decisions.
One customer who was looking for "good quick Chinese take out" had a positive experience with Hunan Garden, stating that they "hit a homerun." They mentioned ordering a significant amount of food, including beef fried rice, chicken with broccoli, chicken with soft noodles, shrimp with lobster sauce, and egg rolls. This suggests that Hunan Garden offers a variety of popular Chinese-American dishes. The reviewer found the food to be "delicious" and was pleased with the "excellent customer service" they received. The fact that they were satisfied enough to explicitly state that they "would definitely go back to this place again" indicates a positive initial impression and a likelihood of repeat business based on their experience.
However, a starkly contrasting and highly concerning review details a profoundly negative experience at Hunan Garden. This customer described the restaurant as "absolutely cluttered and mismanaged," painting a picture of a disorganized and potentially unhygienic environment. Their specific account of asking for water and witnessing a staff member (referred to as "this lady") using bare hands to scoop ice from a "deep freezer" into a "greasy grey cup" raises serious red flags about the sanitary conditions and food handling practices at the establishment. This description is deeply troubling and suggests a significant lack of adherence to basic hygiene standards.
The negative experience for this customer did not end with the unsanitary handling of ice. They further reported that "the lady at the front demanded that I leave a tip after completing the transaction and nearly made it a requirement." This behavior is unprofessional and can create an uncomfortable situation for customers. The subsequent interaction described in the review is even more alarming. The customer alleges that the same staff member made offensive and xenophobic comments, stating, "this wasn’t Mexico and that I’m not back in my country to be acting like a immigrant." These remarks are discriminatory, unacceptable, and indicate a severe lack of respect for customers.
The final and perhaps most egregious part of this negative review is the accusation that the staff member "proceeded to change my amount on a receipt I had already signed." This is a serious allegation of fraudulent activity and a complete breach of trust between the customer and the business. The reviewer stated their intention to notify their bank and emphatically declared that they would "never recommend this place to anybody ever," describing it as "One of the worst lunch experiences I’ve ever had." This strongly negative and detailed account raises significant concerns about the management, ethics, and overall customer experience at Hunan Garden.
Considering these two reviews, local users interested in Hunan Garden are presented with a dilemma. One review praises the delicious food and excellent customer service, suggesting a potentially positive experience, particularly for takeout. The other review, however, details severe issues related to hygiene, unprofessional and demanding behavior regarding tips, offensive and xenophobic remarks, and even alleged fraudulent activity with a signed receipt. These are extremely serious allegations that should not be ignored.
The stark contrast between these two experiences suggests that there may be significant inconsistencies in the service and overall environment at Hunan Garden, or perhaps different customers interact with different staff members who have varying standards of professionalism and hygiene. It is also possible that one of the reviews represents an isolated incident, but the severity of the negative claims warrants serious consideration.
For local users in Camarillo seeking a Chinese restaurant, the information available for Hunan Garden presents a cautionary tale. While the positive review is encouraging regarding the potential quality of the food and service, the deeply troubling details in the negative review cannot be dismissed. Issues of unsanitary practices, demanding tips, offensive behavior, and alleged financial impropriety are significant concerns that would understandably deter many potential customers.
Given this conflicting information, local users might want to exercise extreme caution when considering Hunan Garden. If takeout is the preferred option, the positive review suggests that the food might be satisfactory. However, the allegations of unsanitary conditions in the kitchen, as implied by the bare-handed ice handling, could extend to food preparation as well, raising further concerns. For those considering dining in, the reported cluttered environment and the highly unprofessional and offensive behavior of the staff member described in the negative review make it a potentially unpleasant and even hostile setting.
Without additional reviews to provide a broader consensus, it is difficult to definitively assess the typical experience at Hunan Garden. However, the severity of the negative allegations, particularly those concerning hygiene and ethical conduct, should weigh heavily on the decision of any potential customer. It would be prudent for local users to perhaps explore other Chinese restaurant options in Camarillo that have more consistently positive and less concerning feedback regarding their environment, service, and ethical practices.

Customer Reviews
We were looking to get some good quick Chinese take out. We hit a homerun with Hunan Garden. We ordered way too much food but oh well. We get some good leftovers for the next day or so. The customers service was excellent and the food was delicious. We ordered beef fried, chicken with broccoli, chicken with soft noodles, shrimp with lobster sauce, and egg rolls. We would definitely go back to this place again.
Absolutely cluttered and mismanaged. I asked for water and this lady goes into a deep freezer with bare hands and puts ice in a greasy grey cup. No sanitary conditions whatsoever. The lady at the front demanded that I leave a tip after competing the transaction and nearly made it a requirement. Afterwards she commented that this wasn’t Mexico and that I’m not back in my country to be acting like a immigrant. She then proceeded to change my amount on a receipt I had already signed. I’m notifying my bank and I am never recommending this place to anybody ever. One of the worst lunch experiences I’ve ever had.
Truly the worst restaurant Ive ever been too and the worst service Ive ever received. Extremely unpleasant lady, no greeting and very rude. Dont get me started on the food, might as well drink a bottle of cooking oil. The greasiest and saddest unseasoned chinese food Ive ever had. Did not deserve a tip whatsoever and the lady literally, followed my boyfriend all the way to our car demanding we leave 15% of the tip, she said she was going to charge $5 on my card automatically anyways. that it was their “policy”. I scribbled out the tip part so that she wouldn’t try to charge anything and she still did. I never write reviews but I have to come on here and complain and tell ya’ll, youre all much off going to the Oxnard location.
Can’t believe it took me so long to come here. The people are so nice and I like the vibe of the store. I got lunch takeout and it was delicious. Can’t wait to come back.
Would give zero stars if I could. This place is dirty and disgusting. The lady, I’m assuming the owner since she’s always there, is such a rude human being. This place should be shut down. It’s insane they are even still open. Pathetic excuse for a restaurant
