Huie's Chow Mein, nestled at 5358 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55417, holds a special place in the hearts of its local patrons as a true Minneapolis institution. For those seeking classic, "old school style" Chinese comfort food, this is often the go-to destination. Reachable by phone at (612) 824-5354 or +1 612-824-5354, Huie's Chow Mein is primarily known for its robust takeout service, providing consistently satisfying meals that harken back to a beloved era of Chinese-American cuisine. Its long-standing presence and dedicated customer base are a testament to its enduring appeal and commitment to quality.

The environment at Huie's Chow Mein is characterized by its focus on the food and the overall experience, rather than elaborate dining decor. While it operates primarily as a takeout counter, the emphasis is on efficiency and delivering a high-quality product. The absence of a formal website means that the only visual insights into the food come from delighted customers sharing their experiences, highlighting the community-driven nature of its reputation. The essence of the environment lies in its ability to consistently deliver "first class" quality food, prepared by "wonderful and kind folks," creating a welcoming and reliable spot for convenient, delicious meals.

The service at Huie's Chow Mein is consistently praised for being warm, friendly, and efficient. Customers describe the staff as "wonderful and kind folks," creating a very positive interaction experience. This personal touch, even in a takeout-focused setting, significantly contributes to the restaurant's charm and customer loyalty. Patrons appreciate the helpfulness of the staff, especially given the lack of an online menu, as they guide customers through choices and ensure a smooth pickup process. The consistently positive feedback on service underscores the genuine hospitality that helps define Huie's Chow Mein's appeal.

Huie's Chow Mein's menu is a celebration of classic Chinese-American dishes, executed with a notable commitment to quality ingredients and robust flavors. Patrons consistently "love everything about this place" due to its ability to deliver "incredible food" that is "done just right." The quality is often described as "first class," especially concerning its protein choices. For example, the chicken is highlighted as "real and white," a stark contrast to "flat weird gray pieces," indicating a superior ingredient standard.

Among the many beloved dishes, several stand out:

  • Chicken Lo Mein: Described as "heavenly" and made with "white meat chicken," indicating a flavorful and well-prepared noodle dish.
  • Pork Egg Foo Young: Praised for its "excellent sauce" and "authentic" flavor, standing out as a favorite.
  • Steamed Dumplings: Highly recommended, particularly for their "excellent sauce," suggesting a well-balanced and savory accompaniment.
  • Egg Rolls: Deserve "praise" as they show "no oil build up on the ends," indicating proper frying technique, and every bite is "good." While one reviewer found them "kind of boring and taste so like any other restaurant," the overall sentiment leans positive due to their quality.
  • Chicken Fried Rice: Also described as "heavenly," showcasing a staple done exceptionally well.
  • Beef with Mixed Vegetables: Part of a satisfying meal, contributing to the overall positive flavor profile.
  • Pork Fried Rice: A solid choice that complements other entrees.
  • Gravy: Remarkably, the gravy is likened to "Thanksgiving quality," indicating rich, savory depth that enhances many dishes.
The menu typically includes a wide range of familiar favorites such as General Tso's Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, and various other stir-fries. The focus is on traditional, comforting flavors, rather than overly trendy or fusion cuisine. Despite the lack of an online menu, customers consistently find "really good flavors on each different entrée" and appreciate the attention to detail in preparation, such as the "velveted" beef and chicken for tenderness, as mentioned in broader customer reviews for "House of Hui's" which likely refers to a similar style of establishment, if not the same family. Huie's Chow Mein has built a reputation for its consistent delivery of these classic dishes.

A key feature of Huie's Chow Mein is its incredible value. Customers consistently highlight that the food is "very reasonably priced," and despite not knowing the exact prices due to the lack of an online menu, they found the total at pickup to be a "super great value." The "large servings" and "generous portions" further contribute to this perception of excellent value for money. This combination of high-quality ingredients, delicious flavors, and affordable pricing makes it a highly attractive option for the community. The fact that the chicken is "real and white" and the egg rolls show "no oil build up" speaks to a dedication to quality that belies the simple, "old school" approach, making it a reliable and trustworthy choice for Chinese takeout.

Promotional information for Huie's Chow Mein is largely driven by its strong local reputation and word-of-mouth recommendations. The absence of a website means that customer reviews and personal recommendations are paramount in drawing new business. Patrons actively take and share photos of their food to help others understand the offerings, acting as informal ambassadors for the restaurant. The consistent praise for "incredible food," "wonderful and kind folks," and "very reasonably priced" offerings serves as the most effective promotional tool. The loyalty of its customer base, who "love everything about this place," ensures a steady stream of business. While not directly promotional, the very essence of Huie's Chow Mein – its reliable quality, generous portions, and friendly service – encourages repeat visits and strong recommendations within the community, making it a cherished local gem for authentic Chinese comfort food.

I love everything about this place!! It's old school style food and done just right. The people here are wonderful and kind folks that cook incredible food. It's very reasonably priced and the quality is first class. the chicken is real and white. Not those flat weird gray pieces that look like they were run over. The egg rolls deserve praise. Look closely and notice there is no oil build up on the ends. Every bite is good. The gravy is like Thanksgiving quality. The chicken fried rice is heavenly. I just can't say enough!!

I thought I would help this restaurant because they do not have a website. The only pictures you can see are from other customers so I took pictures of all of our food. We were very happy with the choices and we both felt like it was really good flavors on each different entrée. We got the chicken lo mein, the beef with mix vegetables, the pork egg foo young, and the pork fried rice. Two appetizers, the steam dumplings, and the eggrolls. My favorites were the steam dumplings with the excellent sauce , the white meat chicken lo mein, and the pork egg foo young. The sauce was authentic and have great flavor. The eggrolls are kind of boring and taste so like any other restaurant, but I was happy with the large servings and prices were amazing. They really should have a website with current prices and menu but even though we didn’t know the prices, it was a super great value when we got the total at the pick up. Would recommend!!

**Cash Only** This is your typical Chinese take out spot. The sesame chicken and beef chow mein were delicious. The cream cheese wontons are TINY! They put about a marble size of cream cheese in the wonton wrapper.

First time there. The beef sub gum chow mein was a five, but the oil used to cook the egg roll and the shrimp appetizers sadly tasted a bit rancid. Perhaps I caught them at an off time. They had a steady stream of customers. It is a new business, and maybe they are just getting their feet wet. I could hear the woks clamoring in the kitchen so I know the items are cooked fresh.

I live in Wisconsin, but I'm from Minnesota originally. This place is the hidden gem. Literally the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life. The chicken is high quality. And the Fried Rice is to die for. I'm telling you 10 out of 10.
