About Hu's Cooking

Introducing Hu's Cooking, a Chinese restaurant located at 2502 W Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030, USA, now offering convenient meal takeaway services for local users. While based in Houston, we want to introduce the essence of Hu's Cooking to our USese audience who appreciate authentic Chinese flavors.

Hu's Cooking specializes in a variety of Chinese dishes, with some customer reviews highlighting their Szechuan-style offerings. Patrons have noted the quick preparation time for most dishes, making it a great option for a fast and satisfying meal at home. The restaurant appears to be able to accommodate groups, as one review mentioned a party of six being seated without issue on a Saturday evening.

Featured Dishes and Flavors:

  • Spicy Chicken (Fried): Highly praised for its crispy texture and airy quality, with onions that absorb the distinct peppercorn flavor. It's so popular that some customers order it twice!
  • Twice Cooked Pork: Generally well-received, though some pieces were noted as slightly tough.
  • Mapo Tofu: Known for its excellent portion size and great flavor, a classic Szechuan dish.
  • Beef Slices in Golden Hot Bowl: Appreciated for its generous amount of vegetables, creating a well-balanced meal that pairs perfectly with rice.
  • Sauteed Lotus Root: While noted as being a bit oily, the texture and crispiness were commended.
  • Matcha Soy Milk Tea with Boba: The matcha flavor is considered nice, but the boba itself is described as average with a slightly grainy texture.

Important Note for Allergy Sufferers: Please be aware that some dishes, including the Kung Pao Chicken and Dan Dan Noodles, and potentially others, contain peanuts. Exercise caution if you have nut allergies.

Service and Atmosphere (Based on Reviews): Customers have generally found the service to be friendly and fast. Nut allergy warning: The kung Pao chicken, Dan Dan noodles, and perhaps some other dishes have peanuts, but we were fine with what we ordered. We had no issues getting a table for 6 at around 8:30PM on a Saturday evening. Food came out extremely quickly (less than 10 minutes for almost everything). However, our lotus root order was seemingly forgotten and that took longer, almost 30 minutes. For six people, we ordered: 2x Spicy Chicken (Fried): Two orders because our first vanished so quickly. The chicken is nicely crispy, surprisingly more airy than other Szechuan places I've had. The onion soaks up some peppercorn flavor too. Twice Cooked Pork (4/5): I thought the pork was a little tough on some pieces, but it was overall very good! Mapo Tofu (4.5/5): Excellent portions, great flavor Beef Slices in Golden Hot Bowl (4.5/5): Love the amount of vegetables it came with, very well balanced and goes great with rice. Sauteed Lotus Root (3.5/5): I thought this was a little too oily, but they nailed the texture and crispiness. Matcha Soy Milk Tea with Boba (2.5/5): The matcha flavor is quite nice, but the boba is nothing special. The texture is a little grainy. Overall, a solid option in the area. I'd come back if I was around again but I think I have other favorite Sichuan places in other parts of Houston.

Hu's Cooking is your classic Sichuan style restaurant located near the Medical Center. Parking is a bit of a mess in the front but highly recommend parking in the back as they have a larger gravel lot for when the front gets full. Upon entry, you are immediately greeted by staff and pointed towards your table. I ordered the Spicy Chicken, Dan Dan Noodles, Mapu Tofu, and Stir Fried Green Beans. One thing that stood out to me was the flavor of each of the dishes. Each plate was very well seasoned with the perfect spice level that I could tolerate. My personal favorite was the spicy chicken. The crunch, spice, and onions all pair together well and brings out the flavor of each component. Overall, Hu's Cooking is my current go to at the moment and I cannot wait to eat here again!

Wait time was shorter in the afternoon than in the evening. I came on a Saturday afternoon and I didn't have to wait. Tuesday evening, there was about 20-30mins. The staff were pretty quick and helped me out when there was a dish I didn't like too much. It can get pretty difficult to move around so it's hard for bulky things like wheelchairs, walkers or strollers. The cooks who make the dishes are different in the morning and evening. Some of the food that I ordered during the afternoon tasted off like the beef in the Mongolian beef and the pork in the shu mai. I usually don't order the hot & sour soup but I was told it was pretty good here and I agree. My favorite is the spicy fried chicken! I order it with no peppercorn.

The place was packed but they still got me a little table within minutes. Food arrived in a flash. Duck soup with bamboo had excellent flavor, except for those pesky small bones. Snow peas with Chinese sausage had too much undissolved cornstarch and made the dish looked like Elmo's glue in some spots. Hakka pork stir fry should have included more squid (I counted exactly 2 tiny pieces). Despite these little complaints, I would love tocome back again. It's still better than many average Chinese restaurants.
