About House of Nanking

Step into the bustling atmosphere of House of Nanking, a well-regarded Chinese restaurant nestled in the heart of San Francisco's vibrant Chinatown, located at 919 Kearny St. As a prominent member of the Chinese Restaurant category, House of Nanking has carved out a niche for itself by offering a menu of distinctive dishes that have garnered praise from both local diners and visitors. This establishment is known not only for its flavorful food but also for its quick service and friendly staff, creating a memorable dining experience for all who walk through its doors.

While specific details about the restaurant's decor and ambiance are somewhat limited in the provided reviews, one customer described the atmosphere as "great," suggesting a comfortable and inviting space. The fact that the restaurant was able to seat diners right away even during dinner time around 8 pm indicates efficient management and a potentially lively yet organized environment. It's also interesting to note one observation that the majority of customers appeared to be non-Asian, which might suggest a particular appeal to a broader demographic, possibly through a unique interpretation of Chinese flavors.

Service at House of Nanking is consistently highlighted as a strong point. Reviewers describe the service as "very quick, fast and efficient," indicating that diners can expect a prompt and seamless experience. Furthermore, the staff are repeatedly praised for being "super friendly and nice," contributing to a welcoming and positive atmosphere. This combination of efficient and friendly service likely plays a significant role in the restaurant's popularity and the positive experiences reported by its customers.

House of Nanking's menu features a selection of dishes that have become favorites among its patrons. The Sesame Chicken stands out as a highly recommended item, with one reviewer enthusiastically rating it "12/10" and another stating it was "the best he’s ever had." This suggests that their rendition of Sesame Chicken is particularly noteworthy and a must-try for first-time visitors. The Wonton Soup is also praised for being "very different" and "amazing," featuring a "silky smooth" soup served with what is thought to be toasted rice. This unique take on a classic soup highlights the restaurant's willingness to offer innovative twists on familiar dishes.

While some dishes received mixed reviews, such as the Sesame Noodles, which one diner found to be reminiscent of a "Spaghetti noodles fusion type" and only "okay," and the Steamed Pork Dumplings, which were also deemed just "okay," it's important to consider that taste preferences can vary. However, the strong positive feedback for other items suggests that the restaurant has several standout dishes that are worth exploring.

One of the most raved-about dishes is the Honey Apple Chicken, described as "super bomb" with "insane" apples. This dish, along with the Scallion Pancake and Sesame Tofu, contributed to one customer's decision to visit the restaurant two days in a row, underscoring their exceptional quality. The mention of "fire comes out so fast" might allude to a dynamic cooking process or perhaps a sizzling presentation of some dishes, adding an element of excitement to the dining experience.

Another dish that a returning customer expressed a desire to try is the Sizzling Rice, indicating its popularity and appeal. The fact that a diner who typically prefers "more authentic traditional type of food" found House of Nanking to be "definitely a hit" speaks volumes about the restaurant's ability to satisfy a diverse range of palates, even those with specific preferences for traditional flavors.

Interestingly, one reviewer mentioned the option to "ask the servers to pick for you," a unique feature that suggests the staff are knowledgeable about their menu and confident in their recommendations. This personalized approach can be particularly helpful for first-time visitors or those looking to try something new and off the beaten path. It reflects a level of trust between the restaurant and its patrons, where the staff are seen as reliable guides to the best culinary offerings.

For local users in San Francisco seeking a Chinese restaurant that offers a departure from the ordinary, House of Nanking presents a compelling option. Its reputation for unique and highly praised dishes like the Sesame Chicken and Honey Apple Chicken, coupled with its fast and friendly service, makes it a popular choice in Chinatown. We came here at dinner time around 8pm and got seated right away. We got the Sesame Noodles, the Sesame chicken, steamed pork dumplings and Wonton soup. I had totally forgot that you can ask the servers to pick for you, I would have done that if I remembered. I recommend the Sesame Chicken, it was 12/10 and the Wonton Soup, it is very different from all wonton soups I’ve ever had, the soup was silky smooth, and it was served with toasted rice in the soup I think? It was amazing. The Sesame noodles didn’t stand out for me, it reminds me of Spaghetti noodles fusion type, it was okay, same with the steamed pork dumplings. I did noticed most of their customers were non-Asians, maybe this place is more geared towards that demographic, the food is a little salty in my opinion. Service was very quick, fast and efficient. Staffs are super friendly and nice. I would come back again to try the Sizzling rice and the sesame chicken again—which according to my boyfriend, the best he’s ever had, and he is from SoCal. I tend to have my bias towards more authentic traditional type of food, but this was definitely a hit. I would want to go try out his daughter’s restaurant, House of Fang for the modernized Chinese style as well

Super bomb Chinese food! Loved the Honey Apple Chicken dish (the apples are insane), the Scallion Pancake and the Sesame Tofu. So good we went two days in a row. Great atmosphere and the fire comes out so fast.

This is an awesome spot to grab dinner! The dumplings were amazing, and the chili soy sauce was perfect! I also ordered their "world famous" sesame chicken with sweet potatoes and it did not disappoint! I will definitely be coming back the next time I come to town! I was jealous of a few tables that ordered the fried rice... they do it right at the table on a sizzling plate! Super fun to watch!

Hadn't been in 20 years. Still delicious. Took my husband and it was the best he has ever tried. We lucked out and there was no wait. Small cramped place if you've never been but I like the feel. Not a place to go for a private meal out. I loved everything we ordered. Although...they put peanut sauce on the onion pancake which was still delicious and we ate so much before noticing that it didn't matter. Yummy!

The food was awesome. We really enjoyed the hot and sour soups, pan fried fish with spinach and house noodles. I didn’t think we would be able to finish it all but we did. Service could have been better. We sat just 5 minutes and were already asked twice if we were ready to order. Also, we didn’t find any place to put tip on the receipt but employee followed us all the way out to remind us that we forgot to tip :) Atmosphere was quite busy but that’s what you get. It was a good experience. I did not know that matrix 4 scene was filmed here. That was a pleasant surprise. Will definitely come here again for food.
