About House of Joy Heung Rae Gak Buena Park
Welcome to House of Joy Heung Rae Gak Buena Park, a Chinese restaurant located at 5452 Beach Blvd in Buena Park, California. Operating within the Chinese Restaurant category, House of Joy Heung Rae Gak offers a distinctive take on Chinese cuisine, specializing in what some customers describe as "Koreanized Chinese comfort food." Based on recent customer reviews, the restaurant is particularly noted for its jjampong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and jjangmyun (noodles in black bean sauce), although feedback on service has been mixed.
One long-time customer shared a detailed account of a recent visit, expressing gratitude for enjoyable meals provided over the years. However, their feedback highlighted some service issues encountered during their latest dining experience. This customer pointed out the social norm of tipping in the U.S., where the amount typically reflects the quality of service received. They recounted an unusual and uncomfortable interaction where the restaurant owner (or a lady in charge) inquired about the "lower" tip left by their party after they had paid their bill. This inquiry was particularly unsettling given some of the service shortcomings they experienced.
Specifically, the long-time customer reported an incident where a server spilled an alcoholic beverage on a family elder and did not offer an apology, simply walking away. Additionally, despite the party ordering additional food items, the bill was presented instead of the requested dishes, leading to confusion and an awkward conclusion to their family dinner. This feedback strongly suggests that customer service is an area where House of Joy Heung Rae Gak could improve to enhance the overall dining experience.
Despite these service concerns, another reviewer offered a more concise positive comment, simply stating, "It's a pretty good jjampong spot in Buena Park!" This suggests that the jjampong is a standout dish that has garnered appreciation from at least one customer.
Further insight into the food quality comes from a reviewer who mentioned that it had been a few years since their last visit and noted that the "current owners have it right with jjangmyun and Jjampong." This indicates a potential improvement in these signature dishes under the current management. However, this reviewer also noted that the "noodle portion was on the light side," which might be a consideration for those with a hearty appetite for noodles.
Regarding the service, this same reviewer described it as "prompt but not very friendly," suggesting efficiency without a strong emphasis on warmth or attentiveness. They speculated that the server might have been having an off-day, indicating that service quality could potentially vary. On a more positive note, they found the restaurant to be "fairly tidy." Despite the lukewarm service, this reviewer concluded that they "would definitely visit for another craving of jjangmyun," highlighting the appeal of this particular dish.
In summary, House of Joy Heung Rae Gak in Buena Park appears to be a restaurant specializing in Koreanized Chinese comfort food, with jjampong and jjangmyun being particularly noteworthy dishes. While some long-time customers appreciate the food provided over the years, recent experiences have highlighted potential issues with customer service, including a lack of apology for errors and an unusual confrontation regarding tipping. Other reviews suggest that the jjampong is "pretty good" and that the current owners have improved the jjangmyun. However, one reviewer found the noodle portion to be somewhat small and the service to be prompt but not particularly friendly. The restaurant is noted to be fairly tidy.
Based on the available information, potential customers might find the food, especially the jjampong and jjangmyun, to be a compelling reason to visit House of Joy Heung Rae Gak. However, it is also important to be aware of the reported inconsistencies in service quality. There is no information available regarding the environment or any specific promotional offers at this time. Customer Reviews
Dear restaurant management, Thank you for consistently providing our family with enjoyable meals over the years. As a long-time customer, I wanted to share some feedback from our recent visit, which I hope will contribute to further enhancing the dining experience. While tipping is a widely practiced social norm in the U.S., it is not a mandate. Typically, customers tip based on the quality of service received—higher tips for excellent service and lower tips for areas needing improvement. It felt unusual when, after we paid our bill, the restaurant owner (or lady in charge) returned to inquire about the "lower" tip we provided. This interaction felt awkward and uncomfortable, especially given some service issues during our visit. For instance, a server spilled an alcoholic beverage on a family elder and did not offer an apology, simply walking away. Additionally, despite ordering additional items, the check was delivered instead of the requested food, creating confusion and leaving our family dinner on an awkward note. I share this feedback in the hope that it encourages greater attention to customer service. Exceptional service not only enhances the dining experience but also naturally results in more generous tips. We value this restaurant as a long-time customer and look forward to seeing improvements during our future visits. Thank you for taking the time to consider this feedback.
It's a pretty good jjampong spot in Buena Park! A Koreanized Chinese comfort food spot. It's been a few years since I last visited, and current owners have it right with jjangmyun and Jjampong. Noodle portion was on the light side. Service is prompt but not very friendly. Maybe the server was having an off-day. Restaurant is fairly tidy. I would definitely visit for another craving of jjangmyun.
I was there with my parents today, and a month ago. First time we ordered mongolian been and 8 kinds sea food dish (don't know the name but has abalone, shrimp and other sea food). The weird thing is that food came out 5 min after ordering. The mongolian beef was decent. The other dish was terrible. Today we decided to give this place a second try. The mongolian beef was terrible. Some parts of it were uncooked, which makes no sense given that they use high heat wok. We also ordered a jelly fish dish. It was very substandard and tasted bad. We also ordered Jiajangmyung. The noodle was overcooked and sauce was mediocre. The weirdest thing about this restaurant is that food comes out literally 5-7 after you order. I think what the restaurant operators are doing is that they have food already ready in fridge or freezer, and they throw them in the wok. Now remember I said that we found pieces of uncooked beef in Mongolian beef dish. I think what they did was have the meet thrown into the wok while still frozen and try to stir fry quickly and caused some piece of meat to not cook due to being stuck together in frozen state. I just think this place is cheating somehow. Food is not absolutely terrible but is very mediocre at best. I think they are cutting corners to save time and labor. The taste of the food shows. Our family will never go to this place again. I also notice I feel very gaseous after eating there. Could be a coincidence but given the bad impression they left both times, I don't feel positive about this place at all. Three of us were criticizing the food while eating. I am sure the waitresses heard what we said. It simply makes no sense how they can bring out your dish in 5 min. Don't waste your time going here. You will regret it.
Had a very delicious meal today with a large group of 20 family members. Highlights were jajangmyun, salt and pepper chicken, mongolian beef, chicken fried rice, mabo tofu and crispy fried pork. We were stuffed and left very satisfied. Excellent value. Service was efficient. Will definitely visit again.
Servers are mainly mainland chinese who speaks korean. Very rude, ignorant and unhygienic. They made a mistake and used my card to pay for the other table. I always get an alert when i use my card. I got an alert for the wrong purchase. The server made a mistake but didnt tell me. When i asked them what happened, all he said was, "the transaction was canceled" and walked away without even making an eye contact. I told this to the owner and all she did was smiled at me without a word of apology. They disgusted me.
