About House of Hunan

Located at 2311 Forest Dr Ste E in Annapolis, Maryland, House of Hunan operates as a Chinese restaurant primarily focused on providing takeout services to the local community. They can be contacted at (410) 266-1680 or +1 410-266-1680 to place orders. Recent customer reviews of House of Hunan present a nuanced perspective, highlighting both positive aspects, particularly regarding their plant-based offerings, and areas where some customers have experienced shortcomings in food quality and portion sizes.

One customer who ordered carryout noted a positive initial interaction with the staff, describing the person taking their order as very nice. The food was also prepared quickly, leading to a perception of excellent service at the time of pickup. However, upon arriving home, this customer expressed disappointment with both the quantity and quality of the food. They specifically mentioned an order of chicken wings that consisted of half wings chopped in half, which they initially mistook for nuggets until discovering bones. Additionally, their shrimp fried rice was described as being essentially white rice with peas, lacking the expected ingredients and flavor.

In contrast, another customer had a more positive experience, particularly appreciating the restaurant's plant-based options. They found the plant-based chicken and beef to be excellent and noted that the portions of the main dishes were quite generous. This reviewer mentioned that their partner, upon tasting the vegan General Tso's chicken, was initially convinced it was real meat, attesting to its quality and flavor. The beef and broccoli were described as perfect, and the curry chicken was praised for being super flavorful and containing a generous amount of chicken pieces. This customer also expressed appreciation for a Chinese takeout spot that offers more than just bean curd dishes for plant-based eaters.

Despite the positive feedback on the plant-based options and the generous portions of some dishes, this reviewer did note that House of Hunan is a little pricier than what they are accustomed to for Chinese takeout. They also pointed out that the restaurant skimps on the white rice, providing only 8oz containers with each meal instead of the pint-sized portions they typically expect. This suggests a potential inconsistency in portion sizes across different menu items.

Considering the available reviews, House of Hunan appears to have a notable strength in its ability to create high-quality plant-based alternatives to traditional meat dishes, with the vegan General Tso's chicken being a standout example. The flavorful curry chicken and well-prepared beef and broccoli also indicate a capacity for producing satisfying traditional dishes. However, there are concerns regarding the quality and presentation of some standard items like the chicken wings and shrimp fried rice, as well as potential discrepancies in portion sizes and pricing compared to other local Chinese takeout options.

The environment of House of Hunan is not explicitly described in the provided reviews, as both customers focused on their takeout experiences. Therefore, it is difficult to ascertain the ambiance or decor of the dine-in area, if one exists. The mention of placing and picking up orders suggests that the restaurant is equipped to handle takeout efficiently.

The services offered by House of Hunan primarily include takeout. Customers can place orders, and the restaurant aims for fast preparation, as noted by one reviewer. The availability of plant-based options as a significant part of their menu could be considered a unique service catering to vegetarian and vegan customers seeking more than just the standard vegetable-based Chinese dishes. However, there is no information provided regarding online ordering or delivery services.

There is no specific promotional information mentioned in the provided reviews. The positive feedback on the quality of the plant-based dishes and the generous portions of some items could serve as an implicit promotion, attracting customers specifically looking for these types of offerings. The fact that they go beyond typical bean curd dishes for plant-based options might also appeal to a niche market. However, no discounts or special offers are mentioned.

In conclusion, House of Hunan in Annapolis offers a Chinese takeout menu with a particular strength in its excellent plant-based chicken and beef alternatives, including a highly praised vegan General Tso's chicken. While some traditional dishes like the chicken wings and shrimp fried rice have received negative feedback regarding quality and portioning, other standard options like the beef and broccoli and curry chicken are noted for their flavor and generous portions. The pricing may be slightly higher than some other takeout options, and the portion size of white rice is noted as smaller than expected. For local users in Annapolis seeking Chinese takeout with high-quality plant-based choices, House of Hunan is worth considering, but it may be prudent to inquire about the preparation and portion sizes of other menu items before ordering.

I went there for carryout. The lady taking my order was very nice. The food was prepared fast so I left feeling that I had excellent service. When I got home both the quantity and quality of the food lacking. I got an order of chicken wings that wasn’t even half wings they were half wings that were chopped in half. I thought they gave nuggets until I bit into a bone. The shrimp fried rice was basically white rice with peas.

A little pricier than what I’m used to for Chinese takeout, and they skimp on the white rice by only giving 8oz containers with each meal instead of the expected pint, but the plant-based chicken and beef were excellent and their portions were pretty packed. My partner was convinced her vegan General Tso’s chicken was real meat at first, which I suppose attests to how good it is. The beef and broccoli was perfect and the curry chicken was super flavorful and full of chicken pieces. Always appreciate any Chinese takeout spot that goes beyond bean curd dishes.

My family and I have been coming here for years, since I was a teenager. The owner knows us and we love the food. Really great place. Except tonight our service with Sharon was awful. She was rude and we felt rushed every time we spoke with her, but what stood out most was that she threw the white washcloth at the end of dinner at my husband while he was still eating. It hit him, then fell on the floor. I was absolutely SHOCKED by this behavior and she laughed. All other staff were great, like usual. Sharon could use some more training though.

Serious, and polite hostess/waiter/cashier explained that the vegetarian menu is vegan. The "chicken" curry was delicious, and contained round pads of a chewy pale material, onions, peas, hot pepper seeds, and curry. It was spicy enough that I had to use the entire tiny box (marked 8) of white rice to be able to eat it after a spice-induced coughing fit.

The first time in my life that I’ve ever got Chinese food that I did not like. I ordered shrimp, lo mein with broccoli For carry out. I opened the container. It stunk like as if it were burnt. It was so dry. It had no taste to it. The broccoli And the shrimp were rubbery. It was just very unappetizing. I called and spoke to the owner and he asked me to bring it back so he could put more sauce on it. I will never go back there. It was a waste of money and gross.
