Based on online reviews, Hop Kee Restaurant offers a classic Chinese food experience. One reviewer rated the food an 8/10, noting that while some dishes were slightly salty, everything was "thoroughly enjoyable" and served in "very largely portioned" sizes. Highlights included a "classic" fried rice that evoked childhood memories and "perfectly tender yet chewy" salted pork chops, simply seasoned and golden. The water spinach, though in long strands, was also well-cooked with garlic and enjoyed.

The atmosphere of Hop Kee was also rated 8/10, described as a "large underground space" frequented by both tourists and locals, with a decor and booths indicative of its long history.

Service at Hop Kee received an 8/10, characterized as "very solid, speedy and efficient."

However, one reviewer, identifying as Chinese, expressed concerns regarding billing practices, specifically mentioning the tipping of sales tax and potential price discrepancies for tourists. This reviewer found the practice dishonest and advised charging based on the menu prices.

Another comment suggested that while some dishes are "pretty good," others are "so-so." This reviewer also cautioned against relying on celebrity endorsements.

In summary, Hop Kee Restaurant appears to be a long-established Chinatown eatery offering generous portions of classic Chinese dishes in a traditional setting with efficient service. However, potential customers should be aware of mixed opinions on food quality consistency and some concerns raised about billing practices.

Food 8/10 Slightly on the salty side, but everything was thoroughly enjoyable. Every single dish was very largely portioned. The fried rice was a classic, brought me right back to childhood. The salted pork chops were the highlight of my meal though, perfectly tender yet chewy. Simply seasoned with salt and pepper, golden around the edges. Water spinach came in very long strands, but I do typically enjoy it a bit more chopped up. Cooked well though with garlic, and as my favorite vegetable, I ate it right up. Atmosphere 8/10 Large underground space, filled with a mix of tourists and locals. You know it’s a spot that’s been around considering the decor and the booths. Service 8/10 Very solid service, speedy and efficient.

As a Chinese , really ashamed of what they are doing, honest and trust are the fundamentals of this country, it's ok to add 20% tips, but sales tax shouldn't be tipped. I bet I am the only one figured this out. I am a math teacher, that is what I am teaching my students everyday. They shouldn't price gauging if you are a tourist also. Charge what whatever is on the menus. Food, some dishes are pretty good, but others are just so-so. BTW, celebrity says good, doesn't mean it is good, they were paid to do so. Just ask Oprah Winfrey.

No frills, no thrills classic Chinese restaurant with all the iconic Chinese/Cantonese dishes available on the menu. Some say it’s overpriced but for today’s economy and the area, I can’t really complain. This place gives old school vibes (I read that it has been mostly unchanged since 1968) cash only, and all the servers at the time I went, were older men who’d probably been working there since forever so don’t expect them to pull out your chair or move faster than lightning

We are here in memory of Anthony Bourdain and his trip to Hop Kee while in Brooklyn. Ordered egg rolls, hot and sour soup, Peking duck, sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mein Cantonese style, and steak with Chinese broccoli. The egg rolls were good, Peking duck was good, and the sweet and sour pork was really good. The beef with Chinese broccoli was interesting if you like bbq sauce on your beef and broccoli which I don’t really. Service was fast and friendly. Very busy spot for large groups.

We have been going to Hop Kee for 45 years. Obviously we love it! The food is amazing and the service is friendly and efficient. On this most recent visit we ordered 2 favorites, Hop Kee Chicken, and Peking Pork Chops. We also highly recommend the Cantonese Clams. Please support this restaurant and others in Chinatown!!
