About Hong Kong Star Restaurant

Welcome to Hong Kong Star Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant located at 918 Old 56 Highway in Olathe, Kansas. You can contact them at (913) 829-9898 or via their mobile number at +1 913-829-9898 for inquiries or to place an order. As a Cantonese-style Chinese restaurant in the Olathe area, Hong Kong Star aims to provide a taste of authentic Cantonese cuisine to its local patrons. Based on the available customer reviews, the dining experience appears to be somewhat varied, with certain dishes receiving praise while others have been met with disappointment.

One reviewer highlighted the Beef Chow Fun as being "really good" and the only item they would reorder. This suggests that this particular noodle dish is a standout offering at Hong Kong Star and might be a recommended choice for first-time visitors or those familiar with this Cantonese classic. The positive feedback indicates a satisfying preparation in terms of flavor and quality.

In contrast, the Black Pepper Chicken Feet were described as "bland and served warm," which was a negative experience for the reviewer. Chicken feet are a traditional Cantonese delicacy known for their rich flavor and specific texture, and the description here suggests a lack of these expected qualities. Serving them warm rather than hot also detracted from the dish.

The XO Eggplant also proved to be a disappointment, with the reviewer noting that it was "mostly breading and slightly bitter." XO sauce is typically a flavorful and umami-rich condiment used in Cantonese cooking, and a dish featuring it would be expected to have a prominent and savory taste. The description of excessive breading and bitterness suggests an imbalance in the preparation, masking the potential flavors of the eggplant and the XO sauce itself.

There was also a mix-up with one of the ordered dishes. The customer intended to order Salt and Pepper Fish but received the Fish Fillet Special with White Sauce instead. While they described the received dish as "just okay," the error in the order and the lukewarm feedback indicate a less than satisfactory experience with this particular item.

On a more positive note, the reviewer did commend the speed of service, stating that "the food came out quickly." This suggests that Hong Kong Star is efficient in its kitchen operations and can be a good option for those looking for a relatively fast meal. Additionally, the staff was described as "patient" while the customers took their time browsing the menu, indicating a courteous and accommodating approach to service.

The reviewer who had a mixed experience also mentioned the scarcity of Cantonese restaurants in the Kansas City area, which might necessitate a return to Hong Kong Star to explore other dishes on their menu despite the initial disappointments. This highlights a potential niche that Hong Kong Star fills for those specifically seeking Cantonese cuisine in the region.

Another customer had a significantly more positive experience, particularly noting their visit on Christmas Day, a time when many Chinese restaurants are traditionally open. This reviewer described their meal as "Amazing" and specifically praised the Orange Chicken as being the "real" version, prepared with "orange peals and all," something they had not experienced in a long time. This enthusiastic feedback suggests that Hong Kong Star might excel in certain classic Chinese-American dishes like Orange Chicken, preparing them in a more traditional and flavorful manner that resonates with some customers.

The contrasting reviews make it challenging to provide a definitive assessment of the overall dining experience at Hong Kong Star Restaurant. It appears that some dishes, like the Beef Chow Fun and potentially the Orange Chicken, are well-received, while others, such as the Black Pepper Chicken Feet and XO Eggplant, have been disappointing. There was also an instance of an order error, although the service was noted as quick and the staff as patient.

Information regarding the environment or ambiance of Hong Kong Star is not provided in the reviews. Similarly, there is no mention of any specific promotional offers or features beyond the menu items themselves. Therefore, potential customers will need to rely on the available feedback regarding the food and service when considering this restaurant.

In conclusion, Hong Kong Star Restaurant in Olathe offers Cantonese cuisine with a somewhat inconsistent track record based on the limited reviews. While the Beef Chow Fun and potentially the Orange Chicken stand out as positive experiences, other dishes have been criticized for lack of flavor, improper preparation, or order errors. The service is noted for its speed and patience. For local users in Olathe and the wider Kansas City area seeking Cantonese food, Hong Kong Star might be worth trying, especially for dishes like the Beef Chow Fun. However, it would be prudent to be aware of the mixed feedback on other menu items and perhaps inquire about the preparation of specific dishes before ordering. Given the scarcity of Cantonese options in the area, some may find it necessary to explore Hong Kong Star's menu further despite the varied experiences reported.

The Beef Chow Fun was really good and the only item I would reorder. The Black Pepper Chicken Feet were bland and served warm. The XO Eggplant was disappointing because it was mostly breading and slightly bitter. We ordered Salt and Pepper Fish, but they mistakenly brought the Fish Fillet Special with White Sauce instead. It was just okay. On a positive note, the food came out quickly, and the staff was patient as we took our time browsing the menu. Unfortunately, with so few Cantonese restaurants in KC, Iโ€™ll likely have to return to try other dishes.

Stopped on way back to Kansas on Christmas cause Chinese restaurants are always open on Christmas. Amazing. First time in a long time had real Orange Chicken the way itโ€™s supposed to be. Orange peals and all. Absolutely fantastic food.

Holy. Mother. Of. God. We moved to Missouri a few years ago from San Diego and I was truly bummed at the lack of decent Chinese restaurants. We live at the Lake of the Ozarks and came up here for work. When we saw all the great reviews, I seriously thought it was just too good to be true ...not so, the food was legit AF. ~Salt and Pepper Shrimp, (more like prawns!!) deep fried and lucious. A+ ~Sliced beef w/Chinese veggies on a bed of crispy noodles. Tender and perfectly cooked. A+++ ~Peking pork, deep fried w/a semi sweet sauce and onions. It was delicious but fried too hard for my husband to eat. More for me!๐Ÿ˜‰ ~Salty fish and chicken fried rice. AMAZING. If you like rice and different things added to it, THIS might be something for you to try. The ratio of salty fish (tiny pieces) to rice and chicken was perfect! Our server was very nice, friendly and efficient, unlike the woman at the register who was just sour and unfriendly. The staff wore masks and the place was spotless and overall, our meal was awesome!! I hope we can come back one day.๐Ÿ˜Š
