About Hong Kong Noodles
Hong Kong Noodles has opened a new location at 815 E 78th St, Bloomington, MN 55420, expanding its presence in the Twin Cities area. Accessible by phone at (763) 600-6270 or +1 763-600-6270, this establishment aims to bring its rendition of Hong Kong-style cuisine, including dim sum and noodle dishes, to a new audience in Bloomington. As a Chinese restaurant, it seeks to offer a range of traditional and popular dishes to local diners. It is important to note that the provided reviews reflect experiences during what is described as a "soft opening" phase for this new location, which often comes with initial operational adjustments.
The environment at the new Hong Kong Noodles location is noted for being "bigger, brighter, spacious layout." This suggests a modern and aesthetically pleasing dining area, designed to accommodate a larger number of patrons comfortably. The open and bright setting likely contributes to a pleasant initial impression for diners. However, despite the physical improvements in space, the location itself is described as "very inconvenient and tucked away between hotels, motels, and business buildings across from Walmart," implying that it might be somewhat challenging for new customers to locate without specific directions. This aspect could affect accessibility and ease of visit for casual diners not familiar with the immediate area.
Service during the soft opening period appears to be a significant area of concern. Customers consistently reported "average service" and observed that the restaurant was "under staffs." While a digital menu and tea/water were provided upon seating, there were considerable delays in subsequent service. Patrons found it took "a very long time to flag a staff to place the orders," and once placed, "The orders take even longer to arrive on the table." Even getting basic necessities like water refills or extra napkins was a challenge. The most striking issue was the extended wait for the check, with one family waiting "an extra 40+ minutes literally in waiting for the check to come out," even after repeatedly trying to flag down staff members. Furthermore, a mandatory "18% for a family of 3" gratuity was charged, which customers found audacious given the perceived lack of earned service. This highlights a critical disconnect between the service provided and the expectation of a compulsory tip, leading to considerable customer dissatisfaction.
Hong Kong Noodles offers a menu focused on dim sum and various noodle dishes, typical of Hong Kong-style Chinese cuisine. While the variety of dishes is present, the reviews indicate significant inconsistencies in food quality and flavor.
- Shrimp dumplings and chive dumplings: The wrappers were described as "a little too thick."
- Custard pineapple buns with coconut: Found to be "very dry."
- Pork dumplings and Mild sweetness egg custard: Rated as "okay," suggesting they were passable but not exceptional.
- Tender Pork with salted and pepper: Described as "average."
- Flavorless crispy noodles with chicken and vegetables: Again, rated as "average," specifically noting a lack of flavor.
- Extremely bland string bean dish: A strong negative, indicating a significant lack of seasoning.
- Shrimps, eggs and chives dish: Critiqued for containing "mostly chives" and being "the worst I ever had."
The features of the new Hong Kong Noodles location include a "bigger, brighter, spacious layout," which is a positive environmental upgrade. The provision of "Digital and eliminated dimsum menu provided once we seated" indicates a modern approach to menu presentation, potentially offering more detailed descriptions or images. However, the operational features, particularly during the soft opening, presented significant challenges. The understaffing led to prolonged wait times for ordering, food delivery, and even receiving the bill, severely impacting the customer experience. The controversial policy of automatically charging an 18% gratuity for small parties (e.g., a family of three) despite acknowledged service issues is a notable and negative feature, as it contradicts the idea of earned gratuity and can lead to customer resentment.
Promotional information for Hong Kong Noodles would naturally emphasize its new, spacious location and its offering of Hong Kong-style cuisine and dim sum. However, based on the provided reviews, any promotional efforts must contend with significant negative feedback regarding service and food quality during this initial phase. Customers are advised to "Wait for this place to get their kinks situated before trying it out" due to the "long wait" times and overall "very disappointing" experience. The previous loyalty to the "original location at the UofM" suggests that the brand has a fan base, but the new Bloomington location's current performance risks alienating them. The "inconvenient" location, being "tucked away between hotels, motels, and business buildings," also presents a challenge for drawing in casual foot traffic, meaning the restaurant relies heavily on targeted promotion and positive word-of-mouth, which is currently hampered by the negative experiences reported. Future promotional efforts would need to address and demonstrably resolve the operational and quality issues to rebuild confidence and attract a stable customer base.
In conclusion, Hong Kong Noodles' new Bloomington location at 815 E 78th St, while boasting a "bigger, brighter, spacious layout," appears to be experiencing significant challenges during its soft opening. The service is described as "average" and "understaffed," leading to long wait times for ordering, food delivery, and even receiving the check. Food quality is a consistent concern, with many dishes noted for being "lack of flavor/lack of seasonings" and issues with texture and temperature. The mandatory 18% gratuity for small parties, despite these operational shortcomings, has also been a point of contention. While the potential for genuine Hong Kong cuisine exists, the current customer experiences suggest that improvements in staffing, efficiency, and culinary consistency are needed before it can consistently deliver a satisfactory dining experience. Customers are advised to "Wait for this place to get their kinks situated" before visiting.

New location, bigger, brighter, spacious layout with average service. Understandable under staffs during soft opening. Water, tea, Digital and eliminated dimsum menu provided once we seated. But it takes a very long time to flag a staff to place the orders. The orders take even longer to arrive on the table. It wasn’t busy. If you have little ones, you should order once you seated. The wrapper of the shrimp dumplings and chive dumplings were a little too thick. custard pineapple buns with coconut were very dry. Pork dumplings and Mild sweetness egg custard was okay. Tender Pork with salted and pepper and flavorless crispy noodles with chicken and vegetables was average. Extremely bland string bean dish and Shrimps, eggs and chives dish contains mostly chives( the worst I ever had). Overall every single dishes were lack of flavor/lack of seasonings. Hopefully it will improve in the future.
3 stars is being nice more of 2.5 ✨. Putting in consideration that it's a soft open at the new Bloomington location and that we came before the Friday dinner rush. Waited a little bit to get a tablet to see the menu and sat awhile to put in our order... That was just the beginning of it all. It took 35-40 min for food to completely come out. Food was warm/cooler than it should be. It seems like it was sitting in the kitchen for awhile waiting for the waiter to serve it. An extra 40+ minutes literally in waiting for the check to come out and they have the audacity to charge 18% for a family of 3. Trust me we were not the only unhappy ones waiting for the check. Bill came out to be $145. I saw an older couple in their 80's sitting there waiting for the check way before us and the husband had to walk around struggling with his legs to find someone to ring them up. Smh 🤦🏻♂️We tried to flag down 3 different staff to get our check. Don't even ask about how long it took us to get togo boxes. After asking 3 staff we still waited for a long time. It got to the point my wife stood up, raised her voice very uncommon for her to do that and waived the guy in front (host/owner) to ring up our check. It was not a good experience! Food was good slightly salty but there was no refills on the water or extra napkins. Very understaffed but don't do that - Service is service and you deserve tip when it's earned. Charge when it's 6+ people or more. Very disappointing! Wait for this place to get their kinks situated before trying it out because it not worth the long wait IF you're a loyal fan of the original location at the UofM. Location is very inconvenient and tucked away between hotels, motels, and business buildings across from Walmart. Somewhat going out of your way to find it.
What a fantastic experience! Our server was phenomenal, and all the food came out pipping hot and super fast. I can't wait to come back with enough friends to take over a lazy Susan table.
My family and I have been longtime fans of Hong Kong Noodles since their days at the U of M Minneapolis location. We’ve always enjoyed dining in and taking out, so when we heard they were moving to Bloomington—closer to home—we were genuinely excited! The new space is bigger, brighter, and incredibly welcoming. It’s clean, spacious, and perfect for family gatherings. We recently came here to celebrate my birthday, and it couldn’t have been more special. The staff were so kind, attentive, and sincere—it really made the experience memorable. Although they’re currently in their soft opening phase, they’re working incredibly hard to make sure everyone is taken care of. The food took a bit longer than usual, which is completely understandable, and absolutely worth the wait. Everything tasted just as delicious and flavorful as we remembered. We shared a variety of classic Chinese dishes, and each one was comforting, well-seasoned, and satisfying. If you’re visiting soon, please remember to be kind and patient with the staff—they’re doing their best, and it truly shows. This place has always held a special place in our hearts, and we’re so happy to see it thriving in a new location. Can’t wait to come back again and again!
I know they’re just opening so I gave 4 stars to give them some credit. Was excited to try this place as I normally have to go to Saint Paul, Peking Garden, if I want this kind of food. First off, the food was great… But customer service was very poor. Very little acknowledgement from staff. Dishes did not come with any serving utensils. We had to ask for forks and spoons separate times. There were chopsticks but please keep in mind, not everyone uses chopsticks, nor does everyone like different chopsticks in shared dishes. No one came over to check on us or offer water refills unless I had my hand raised like a kid in a classroom. We had to ask for napkins two different times. I mean, you’re a restaurant, why the greed on napkins? I’ll wait some time before trying again as I am sure they are still trying to get their stuff together.. but to the restaurant, please keep in mind, good customer service goes a long way…
