About Hong Kong Express
Located at 1609 State Road Suite 103 in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, Hong Kong Express is a Chinese restaurant serving the local community. As part of the Chinese Restaurant category, Hong Kong Express offers a range of standard Chinese dishes, primarily for takeout, although dine-in service may also be available. The customer reviews present a stark contrast in experiences, highlighting both significant issues with food quality and service, as well as some positive aspects regarding food preparation and oil usage.
Based on the available customer reviews, the environment of Hong Kong Express has received limited commentary. One reviewer mentioned that "the dining room is cold in the winter," suggesting that a dine-in area exists but may not be consistently comfortable. The other reviews primarily focus on takeout experiences and do not provide details about the restaurant's interior ambiance or décor. Therefore, local users seeking information about the dine-in environment may need to visit the location or look for additional online reviews that might offer insights into the dining area.
The services offered by Hong Kong Express appear to include takeout, as all the reviews discuss ordering and receiving food to go. One reviewer specifically mentioned calling in an order for pickup. While delivery is not explicitly stated, it is a common service for Chinese restaurants, and it would be prudent to inquire directly with Hong Kong Express about their delivery options. The customer service experience seems to be inconsistent. One reviewer reported an "aggressively short and rude" interaction with the woman behind the counter, both during the phone order and in person. This is a significant negative aspect of their service. In contrast, another reviewer mentioned "good experiences here for some time now," implying positive interactions. Additionally, one reviewer noted that while they recommend takeout, customers should "plan ahead" as wait times could vary, with a "20 minutes" estimate sometimes turning into "40," particularly when the family-owned business is shorthanded. This suggests that while service can be good, it may also be subject to delays depending on staffing levels.
Several features of Hong Kong Express emerge from the customer reviews, both positive and negative. A major negative feature reported by one customer was a severe case of suspected food poisoning affecting their entire family after a large order. This is a very serious accusation and a significant concern for potential customers. The same reviewer also described the food as having a similar "chemical tasting" sauce across multiple dishes, making it difficult to distinguish between them, with an excessive amount of undercooked tempura batter on tiny shrimp. The unusually quick preparation time of 10 minutes for a large order was also flagged as a potential indicator that the food is not cooked fresh. On a more positive note, one reviewer highlighted that Hong Kong Express is "one of the Chinese places that knows how to change their oil out once in a while," suggesting a commitment to food quality in terms of preventing a uniform "everything tastes like everything else" issue that can occur when oil is not changed regularly. This is a significant positive aspect regarding their food preparation practices. Another feature mentioned is that it is a "family owned business," which can sometimes correlate with more personalized service, although the negative review cited earlier contradicts this in that instance. The inconsistency in preparation times (sometimes quick, sometimes delayed) is also a notable characteristic.
The customer reviews for Hong Kong Express present a highly polarized view. One reviewer had an extremely negative experience involving suspected food poisoning, poor food quality, and rude service. This review raises serious red flags for potential customers. On the other hand, other reviewers reported "good experiences" and appreciated the fact that the restaurant changes its cooking oil regularly. The comment about the cold dining room in winter suggests that dine-in may not be the most comfortable option. The inconsistency in service and preparation times also indicates potential variability in the customer experience. Local users considering Hong Kong Express should carefully weigh these contrasting reports.
One reviewer mentioned that "their website doesn't work," which could be a limitation for customers trying to view the menu or get more information online. This lack of a functional website might also hinder the restaurant's ability to share any promotional offers or updated information with potential customers. Therefore, there is no information available in the provided reviews regarding any specific promotional offers or discounts at Hong Kong Express. To inquire about their menu, hours of operation, delivery options, and any current promotions, local users would need to contact the restaurant directly via phone at (717) 957-3933 or +1 717-957-3933.
In conclusion, Hong Kong Express in Duncannon, PA, is a Chinese restaurant with a deeply divided customer response based on the available reviews. While some patrons have had good experiences and appreciate their food preparation practices like changing the cooking oil, one reviewer reported a severe case of suspected food poisoning, poor food quality across multiple dishes, and rude service. The dining room is noted as being cold in the winter, suggesting takeout might be the preferred option for many. Service can also be inconsistent in terms of speed. Potential customers should be aware of these starkly contrasting experiences. For information on their menu and any current promotions, direct contact with the restaurant is recommended, especially given the reported issues with their website.

Spent over $100 just to get food poisoning for the whole family. None of us could even finish our plates because of the taste. Ordered sweet and sour, sesame chicken, general tso's, rangoons, spring rolls, 2 types of lo mein and coral shrimp. It looked and tasted like it was all the same sauce, but they just added a ton of seeds on top for the sesame. We couldn't tell by looking or tasting which was which entrè except the sweet and sour was a little brighter than the rest. It was all kinda chemical tasting with a touch of spicy heat, even on the beef lo mein. The coral shrimp came with the white sauce in a separate container that was so cold and jelly it was like it had been pulled from the fridge and stuck in the bag, I have also never seen so much tempura batter (undercooked no less) on a single piece of tiny shrimp. The majority of the entire order went directly to the trash as the woman behind the counter was aggressively short and rude from the time my hubby called to order and walked in to pick it up. We were tired from a long day at the hospital so we weren't trying to deal with that. Also, when we placed the order we were surprised that we were told it would all be ready in 10 minutes, thought we misheard, but nope when the hubs walked in it was surely ready. In all honesty, that should have been our big red flag. Such a massive waste of money and we don't normally order out because its so expensive. I know places have off days, but this was beyond ridiculous and after checking with some other locals, the 10 minute thing is apparently the usual, no matter the size of the order. That tells me it's not just a fluke, it also says nothing is cooked fresh. Never again!!!
Updated for MENU - their website doesn't work. Can't speak for others. We've gotten good experiences here for some time now. Notably, this is one of the Chinese places that knows how to change their oil out once in a while so everything doesn't taste like everything else. I would recommend take out. The dining room is cold in the winter. That said, plan ahead. There have been times where 20 minutes has turned into 40. It's a family owned business and there are times they are shorthanded.
Went there the other day to get some food and i left my debit card. i called them not even 8 minutes after leaving and they told me the card was not there. later that night i checked my bank account and there was a charge for the place next door an hour later after i called.
When I lived in Marysville this restaurant made great food. Last night 10/2/2024. I bought food from here. The food was low quality. I could have gotten better Chinese food from the freezer section in Giant. Also the young people that run the restaurant that pretend to not know how to speak English. Went to susquenita school with my oldest daughter. I find pretending not to speak English in an English speaking country when you were born, raised and educated by this country offensive and racist.
Love this place, we order for the whole family weekly!
