About Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant

Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant, located at 3003 Guess Rd in Durham, North Carolina (zip code 27705), stands out as a "Chinese Restaurant" with a notable reputation for its dim sum. They can be contacted at (919) 479-8339 or via their mobile number +1 919-479-8339 for inquiries or to place orders. For local users in Durham and the surrounding areas, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant offers a distinct dining experience, particularly for those who appreciate authentic and flavorful dim sum.

Based on the available customer reviews, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant has garnered significant praise for its dim sum offerings. One enthusiastic reviewer described it as serving up "some of the best dim sum around," emphasizing its freshness, flavor, and overall value. This reviewer specifically highlighted the lunchtime experience, where the classic dim sum cart service is available, allowing diners to select from a variety of small dishes as they are brought around. They also noted that dinner service is order-only, which might result in a longer wait time, but assured that the consistently excellent food makes it worthwhile. The service was characterized as both friendly and efficient, further enhancing the positive dining experience. This review strongly recommends Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant as a "must-try" for dim sum enthusiasts.

Another customer offered a slightly more reserved opinion, stating that while it might be a popular spot for others, it wasn't entirely their personal style. However, they did specifically enjoy two dishes: the roasted duck and the radish cakes, indicating that these are also noteworthy items on the menu. This reviewer suggested that the service could be improved and recommended ordering ahead by phone for pickup, implying that takeout might be a smoother experience for some.

A third reviewer shared their experience dining in for dinner. They confirmed that the dim sum carts were not available during dinner service, aligning with the first reviewer's observation. They also noted that the restaurant was "super busy" during their dinner visit, advising potential diners to be prepared for a possible wait, which again suggests the restaurant's popularity, particularly during peak hours.

Combining these reviews, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant is clearly recognized for its exceptional dim sum, especially during lunchtime when the traditional cart service is offered. This feature provides a dynamic and engaging way to sample a variety of small, flavorful dishes. The transition to order-only dim sum at dinner, while potentially involving a wait, is still recommended due to the consistent quality of the food. Beyond dim sum, the roasted duck and radish cakes have also received positive mentions, suggesting other well-prepared dishes on the menu.

As a Chinese restaurant specializing in dim sum, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant likely offers a wide array of these small, Cantonese-style dishes. Dim sum typically includes a variety of steamed, fried, and baked items, such as dumplings (e.g., shrimp dumplings or har gow, pork dumplings or siu mai), buns (e.g., char siu bao or barbecue pork buns), rolls, cakes (like the mentioned radish cakes), and other savory and sweet delicacies. The freshness and flavor of these items are clearly a point of pride for Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant, according to customer feedback.

Beyond dim sum, as a full-service Chinese restaurant, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant would also likely offer a broader menu of Cantonese and other Chinese-American dishes. The mention of roasted duck indicates that they likely have roast meat specialties. Other common offerings might include:

  • Appetizers: In addition to dim sum, they might offer other appetizers like spring rolls, egg rolls, and various small plates.
  • Soups: A selection of Cantonese-style soups is probable.
  • Main Entrees: Featuring a variety of dishes with chicken, beef, pork, and seafood, prepared with different sauces and cooking methods typical of Cantonese cuisine.
  • Rice and Noodles: Including options like fried rice, chow mein, and other noodle dishes.
  • Vegetable Dishes: A range of stir-fried and other vegetable preparations.
  • Desserts: Possibly including traditional Chinese desserts.

The environment of Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant is implied to be popular and busy, especially during dinner service. The lunchtime dim sum cart experience suggests a spacious enough dining area to accommodate the carts and circulating staff. While one reviewer mentioned the service could be better, another described it as friendly and efficient, indicating that experiences might vary or that the service is generally positive, especially considering the busy periods. The fact that customers are willing to wait for dinner service suggests that the ambiance is likely acceptable and that the quality of the food is the primary draw.

The available reviews do not contain any information about specific promotions at Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant. It is common for restaurants to offer lunch specials, combination deals, or discounts on certain days or for large groups, especially for dim sum which is often enjoyed communally. To learn about any current promotions, local users would need to contact the restaurant directly.

In conclusion, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant in Durham, NC, is highly recommended, particularly for its fresh and flavorful dim sum, which is served via traditional carts during lunchtime. While dinner service is order-only and can be busy, the consistently excellent food is considered worth the wait. The roasted duck and radish cakes are also notable dishes. The service is generally regarded as friendly and efficient, though one reviewer suggested takeout might be preferable for some. For local dim sum lovers and those seeking quality Cantonese cuisine in Durham, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant appears to be a must-visit. To inquire about reservations, takeout procedures, or any potential promotions, they can be reached at (919) 479-8339 or +1 919-479-8339.

This spot serves up some of the best dim sum around—fresh, flavorful, and totally worth every cent. Lunchtime brings the classic dim sum cart experience, while dinner is order-only, which can mean a bit of a wait. But trust me, it’s worth it. The food is consistently excellent, and the service is friendly and efficient. A must-try if you’re a dim sum fan!

It might be a popular spot for others, but it’s not quite my style. I did enjoy the roasted duck and radish cakes though. The service could be better, so I’d suggest ordering ahead by phone and picking it up. I went for dinner and dined in. They didn’t have the dim sum carts, and it was super busy — you might need to wait a bit.
