About Hong Kong Cafe
Welcome to Hong Kong Cafe, a Chinese restaurant situated at 100 Main Ave NW in Hickory, North Carolina (NC 28601, USA). As a local establishment in the Chinese Restaurant category, Hong Kong Cafe has elicited varied reactions from its patrons, with significant praise for its service but notable concerns regarding the quality and taste of its food, as well as the condition of its environment. This introduction aims to provide local users with a detailed and objective overview of Hong Kong Cafe based on recent customer reviews.
The environment of Hong Kong Cafe is described by one reviewer as having "character," further elaborated by the observation of a visible roof leak. Another customer explicitly states, "The restaurant is old, they try their best with maintenance but there’s better Chinese cuisine out there." These comments suggest that the physical premises of Hong Kong Cafe are dated and may exhibit signs of wear and tear. While one reviewer claims not to prioritize the look of a restaurant over food quality, the mention of a leaking roof indicates a potentially significant maintenance issue. The overall impression is of an aging establishment that may not offer a modern or aesthetically pleasing dining atmosphere.
In terms of services, Hong Kong Cafe appears to primarily offer dine-in options, as customers describe their experiences of eating at the restaurant. Takeout service is also a likely offering, as is common for many Chinese restaurants, though it is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews. One reviewer noted that the staff brought the food to their table, indicating some level of table service. However, the focus of the positive feedback is overwhelmingly on the personality and friendliness of the staff rather than the efficiency or attentiveness of the service beyond delivering the food. Local users can likely contact the restaurant by phone to inquire about takeout availability and any specific dining service protocols.
The features of Hong Kong Cafe present a stark contrast between the positive aspects of its staff and the negative feedback concerning its food. The most consistently praised feature is the exceptional customer service. Reviewers describe the staff as "funny, nice, and put forth effort to make sure we were comfortable." This dedication to customer comfort and the friendly demeanor of the staff are significant positives. However, this positive aspect is unfortunately overshadowed by the significant criticisms of the food quality and pricing.
Customers have described the food as "flavorless" and not worth the "high price." One reviewer detailed a disappointing experience where the "dumpling taste and feel like mush," the "rice is flavorless," and the "chicken even worse"—described as "hard, half cold and half hot, it’s like it’s been microwaved." These are severe criticisms indicating potential issues with food preparation, ingredient quality, and even food safety, as suggested by the temperature inconsistencies. The drinks also received negative feedback for having a "bad after taste," attributed by one reviewer (with kitchen experience) to potentially unsanitary drink spouts.
Another significant concern raised is the apparent lack of seasoning in the food, requiring a customer to "douse it in pepper." Furthermore, there are alarming mentions of the sauces available on the tables. One reviewer noted trying the sauces in the bottles shown in photos and concluded that "it’s been bad for a while" and "could seriously make someone sick." This raises serious food safety red flags and suggests a lack of attention to the freshness and quality of condiments offered to customers.
The pricing at Hong Kong Cafe is also a point of contention. One customer mentioned spending $52 for a meal that they expected to be at least decent but found to be awful. Another stated that "$45 for three plates" seemed "way too expensive for the quality of food we got." These comments indicate that customers perceive the prices to be high relative to the poor quality of the food they received, leading to a sense of dissatisfaction and poor value for money.
Regarding promotional information, the provided customer reviews do not mention any specific discounts, special offers, or ongoing promotions at Hong Kong Cafe. The negative feedback regarding the high prices and poor food quality suggests that any potential promotions would need to significantly address these core issues to attract and retain customers. Local users are encouraged to contact Hong Kong Cafe directly for any information on current specials, but should also be aware of the concerns raised by recent diners.
For local users in Hickory, NC, considering Hong Kong Cafe, it is crucial to carefully weigh the information presented in the recent customer reviews. While the staff is consistently praised for their friendliness and effort, the overwhelming feedback regarding the flavorless and poorly prepared food, coupled with high prices and concerns about food safety and the aging environment, paints a concerning picture. Potential customers might want to consider these issues seriously before deciding to dine at Hong Kong Cafe. Contacting the restaurant directly at (828) 327-8444 or +1 828-327-8444 to inquire about their current practices and address the concerns raised in the reviews might be a prudent step before visiting.
In conclusion, Hong Kong Cafe in Hickory, NC, is a Chinese restaurant that receives high marks for its friendly and funny staff who strive to make customers comfortable. However, this positive aspect is significantly overshadowed by strong negative feedback concerning the flavor and quality of the food, which has been described as flavorless, poorly prepared, and overpriced. Concerns about the aging environment and potentially unsafe condiments further compound these issues. Local users seeking a satisfying Chinese meal in Hickory may want to exercise caution and consider the significant criticisms raised in recent customer reviews before choosing to dine at Hong Kong Cafe.

Customer Reviews
We went here looking for some good Chinese food, and ended up with flavorless food, and a high price for flavor. For us to eat it cost $52 so we expected at least decent food. However the dumpling taste and feel like mush. The rice is flavorless, and the chicken even worse. It’s hard, half cold and half hot, it’s like it’s been microwaved. The drinks had a bad after taste and after working in a kitchen, it’s because they aren’t changing the spouts to their drinks. There was no seasoning and we had to douse it in pepper. The only redeeming quality was the staff. They were funny, nice, and put forth effort to make sure we were comfortable. The restaurant has character is one way to put it. You can see where it was leaking from the roof. I don’t care about the look of a restaurant, but the quality of the food. Overall food awful, service great, and atmosphere was meh. Also to top it off, those bottles in the photos, we tried the sause, and it’s been bad for a while. Could seriously make someone sick.
The restaurant is old, they try their best with maintenance but there’s better Chinese cuisine out there. It was also 45 dollars for three plates? It seemed way too expensive for the quality of food we got.
The old building has character but is better on the outside than inside. The ceiling had leak marks and tbe vents were filthy. The booths were very old and decapitated. When I sat down the seat cushion was wonky so I adjusted myself and when I sat back down it felt like the bottom fell out. The staff was very pleasant and professional. I had high hopes after reading reviews but the food was only mediocre to us. Brought take out home for our kids and they didn't like it either. The egg roll was very different, and had a pungent taste, and didn't taste cabbage. The egg drop soup was okay, but a little on the bland side- just thick broth and egg, nothing else. The cream cheese wonton was good but stale. The sweet and sour chicken was pretty tasty. The fried rice however was quite different than anything I've had. It had no veggies and was yellow. The pork fried rice was terrible. Our first time there will be our last.
My regular place was closed today, so I had to try something different. Hong Kong Cafe was the nearest place to me. And it was terrific. The prices were good the food was incredible. I may have a new regular place.
Tasty food and friendly service! The parking nearby is free. The veggies were vibrantly colored and cooked just right, not too mushy.
