About HK CAFE
Nestled in the heart of Honolulu's vibrant Chinatown, at 1113 Maunakea St #101, HK CAFE offers a genuine taste of Hong Kong. As a dedicated Chinese restaurant, HK CAFE provides a diverse menu and a welcoming atmosphere that transports diners straight to the bustling streets of Hong Kong. Whether you're a local craving authentic flavors or an adventurous eater seeking a unique culinary experience, HK CAFE is a destination worth exploring.
Stepping into HK CAFE is like taking a step back in time to the traditional "cha chaan teng" (Hong Kong-style cafe). The ambiance evokes the nostalgic charm of these classic eateries, offering a comfortable and unpretentious setting to enjoy a satisfying meal. For those familiar with Hong Kong culture, the presence of a TV playing the TVB channel adds an extra layer of authenticity, immersing diners in the sights and sounds of the region.
The service at HK CAFE is noted for its attentiveness and linguistic versatility. The waitstaff is capable of communicating fluently in both Cantonese and Mandarin, ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience for a wide range of customers. This multilingual ability underscores the restaurant's commitment to serving an authentic Hong Kong experience to both locals and visitors.
HK CAFE's menu is a treasure trove of classic Hong Kong dishes, catering to a variety of tastes and preferences. A standout beverage is the quintessential Hong Kong-style iced milk tea, praised for its balanced sweetness and rich flavor. For those seeking a savory start, the omelette rice with satay sauce, featuring a generous amount of peanuts in the flavorful sauce and a combination of shrimp and char siu, comes highly recommended. While both the shrimp and char siu are well-received, the shrimp is particularly noted for its fresh taste.
Another popular choice is the chicken with green onions, served alongside two sunny-side-up eggs and fragrant fried rice. The combination of tender chicken and the aromatic scallion oil is a testament to the simple yet delicious flavors of Hong Kong cuisine. The menu also boasts an extensive selection of comforting and hearty porridge and noodle options, perfect for a light yet fulfilling meal. Notably, after 11 am, HK CAFE offers baked rice dishes, a specialty that is often hard to find in other Chinese restaurants, adding a unique dimension to their offerings.
A must-try at HK CAFE, and a true highlight of the dining experience, is the ovaltine French toast. This unique dessert is exclusively available for dine-in customers, as its texture is best enjoyed fresh. The thick toast is generously coated with ovaltine powder, lending a distinctive chocolatey and malty flavor. Inside, a stream of hot condensed milk oozes out when the toast is sliced open, creating a delightful contrast of textures and a rich, sweet, and slightly sticky indulgence. This signature dish is a testament to HK CAFE's ability to offer both traditional and innovative Hong Kong flavors.
Beyond the specific dishes mentioned, HK CAFE offers other classic Hong Kong comfort foods, such as the beef brisket and tendon served over rice, and ginger onion lomein. The beef briskets and tendons are lauded for their exceptional tenderness and authentic preparation, hitting all the right notes for those familiar with these dishes. The ginger onion lomein is also praised for its satisfying flavor and texture. Customers appreciate the quick service and the comfortable seating area, which, unlike some older establishments in Hong Kong, offers a more spacious and relaxed environment.
In a neighborhood like Chinatown, where pho restaurants are abundant, HK CAFE stands out as a welcome alternative, offering a diverse range of authentic Hong Kong flavors. It provides a genuine taste of a culinary tradition that goes beyond the typical Chinese-American fare. Whether you're craving a comforting bowl of porridge, a flavorful rice dish, or the unique sweetness of ovaltine French toast, HK CAFE offers a satisfying and authentic experience.
For those looking to experience a genuine slice of Hong Kong's culinary scene in Honolulu, HK CAFE is a compelling choice. You can reach them at (808) 200-5757 or +1 808-200-5757 for inquiries or to place an order. While the restaurant can get busy and may experience staffing constraints at times, leading to potential wait times or the need to turn away customers during peak hours, the quality of the food and the authenticity of the experience make it a worthwhile visit. Come and discover the unique and delicious flavors of Hong Kong right here in Honolulu at HK CAFE.

I'm from Hong Kong and the food + atmosphere here was pretty authentic. The waitress spoke fluent Cantonese and Mandarin and there was a TV playing the TVB channel from Hong Kong. They seemed understaffed though and had to turn away some other customers while we were eating. Iced Hong Kong milk tea was good, not too sweet. I got omelette rice with satay sauce, shrimp and char siu. The satay sauce had lots of peanuts in it and went well with the ingredients. The shrimp tasted better than the char siu but both are good. My husband got chicken with green onions, 2 sunny-side-up eggs and fried rice. Green onions with their scallion oil is always a great combination with chicken and rice. They also had lots of porridge and noodle options on their menu, and after 11am they have baked rice as well, which is difficult to get from other Chinese restaurants. We then shared the ovaltine French toast for dessert, which is a unique product from them and the highlight of the meal. The toast was covered in ovaltine powder (chocolate-like in flavor), and the inside contained hot condensed milk, which mixed well with the powder when you slice the toast open to provide an amazing sweet and sticky flavor. This dish is only for dine-in customers, as takeout would make the bread too soggy. Would definitely recommend.
A throwback from the bygone days of small cafes in Hong Kong. The menu is quite typical and the food was very tasty. We had the beef briskets & tendon over rice and ginger onion lomein. The briskets and tendons were some of the tenderest I ever had and was right on point. The lomein was quite good as well. The food came out quickly and the sitting area was comfortable and not cramped as in old Hong Kong. It’s getting harder and harder to find a non-Pho restaurant in Chinatown and this is a good one if you are tired of Phos.
Four of us came here for lunch on a Wednesday, and sat right away. Food didn’t take long to come out either. Parked in one of the municipal parking structures. The Wonton soup with egg noodles was delicious, broth tasty and a good amount of noodle serving; we got this 2x. The seafood laksa was delicious, but spicy! Two pieces each of shrimp, muscles, squid and imitation crab. The shrimp omelette with black pepper sauce was also good! Don’t get the spaghetti with tomato sauce. The peanut butter French toast was so good, but small for the price of $8.99! Lunch with all these dishes and two sodas came out to just under $90. Glad we tried them out, but probably won’t return.
This is the cutest little mom and pop restaurant. We were greeted immediately after arriving and the server finished cleaning our table and putting it together to make room for our party of five. The ambience is really nice. There's a cute tile pattern on the walls and there are plenty of HK Posters and photos around the restaurant. Our server/hostess was kind and very patient with us. She repeated our orders to make sure they were ok and made sure to answer any questions we had. All of our food was out in less than 20 minutes. Each dish was served as it was prepared. The soup came, followed by the chow fun and then my omelette and rice. The food was clearly freshly made and very delicious. I highly recommend coming by and getting food here.
New and very clean. Food came out relatively quickly but we had to inquire about our you tiao which we had not received even though all the rest of our dishes had arrived. The broth for beef brisket and tendon noodle soup was really tasty! The congee was gingery and comforting, and the steamed flour rolls were so unique. The ovaltine toast was really cool but I didn't care for it. Looking forward to returning to try more menu items.
