About Happy Hot Hunan

Welcome to Happy Hot Hunan, a distinguished Chinese restaurant located in the Upper West Side of New York City, specializing in the bold and aromatic flavors of Hunan cuisine. Situated at 969 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10025, USA, Happy Hot Hunan stands out in the Chinese Restaurant category as a go-to destination for those seeking authentic and satisfying Hunan dishes. Based on customer reviews, this establishment has garnered a reputation for its delicious food, affordability, and pleasant dining experience.

For local users in the Upper West Side and surrounding areas, Happy Hot Hunan offers a genuine taste of Hunan province, known for its spicy and savory dishes. One enthusiastic reviewer declares it their "go-to Hunan cuisine restaurant in UWS," highlighting its appeal to those familiar with or seeking this particular regional Chinese culinary style. This endorsement suggests that Happy Hot Hunan is a reliable choice for authentic Hunan flavors in the neighborhood.

A significant draw for many patrons appears to be Happy Hot Hunan's "very affordable lunch specials menu." This indicates that the restaurant provides budget-friendly options during lunchtime, making it an attractive spot for students, local workers, and residents looking for a delicious and economical midday meal. The availability of lunch specials broadens its appeal and accessibility to a wider range of customers.

Several specific dishes are recommended by satisfied customers. The Kung Pao Chicken, a classic Sichuan dish that has also found its place in Hunan cuisine with regional variations, is highlighted as a must-try. The Shredded Beef is another recommended item, suggesting a flavorful and well-prepared beef dish. Pork Belly, often braised or stir-fried in Hunan cuisine to achieve a rich and savory taste, is also on the list of recommended dishes. Finally, the Green Beans, likely stir-fried with garlic and perhaps dried chili peppers, are also praised, indicating that even their vegetable offerings are noteworthy.

Beyond these specific recommendations, another reviewer expressed surprise at how much they enjoyed their meal, stating that the place was "much better than I expected from the reviews." This suggests that Happy Hot Hunan might even exceed the expectations of some diners, delivering a more positive experience than anticipated. This reviewer also mentioned ordering a lot of food and sharing it among five people, implying that the portion sizes are likely generous enough for sharing, or that the group wanted to sample a wide variety of dishes.

One dish that stood out to this particular reviewer was the "mala." Mala is a distinctive flavor profile in Chinese cuisine, particularly Sichuan cuisine, characterized by its numbing (ma) and spicy (la) sensation derived from Sichuan peppercorns and chili peppers. The fact that the mala dish was this reviewer's favorite indicates that Happy Hot Hunan excels in creating dishes with this complex and exciting flavor profile, which is also a significant aspect of Hunan cuisine, often featuring a fiery and intense spiciness.

This place was much better than I expected from the reviews. We ordered a lot of food and split it five ways. The mala was my favorite.

Ordered delivery and thought it was one of the better deliveries in the neighborhood. My big thing is authenticity and this order seemed very authentic. Double cooked hunan pork and mouthwatering spicy chicken. Both dishes were expertly spiced and executed. I do like it spicy though so if you don’t maybe this isnt for you. Happily the chicken had been hacked up with no bones and balanced out by the peanuts and cilantro. The pork was perfect. This will be on the regular rotation for spicy Chinese food.

The Eggplant w/ garlic sauce was amazing as usual (comes w/ white rice). It came hot and well cooked, the eggplant was melting in the mouth. The Spicy Rice Noodles w/ veggies was okay. The noodles were overcooked, given to it the soggy/sponge texture. The broth was flavorful and level of spicy was on point in my opinion. We also ordered 4 spring rolls and those ones were disappointing. It came cold, greasy and no flavor at all, not even the sauce. Service is always the same, not too much talking (even when you are asking something about the menu) and food will be over your table in at least 10mins. I think the atmosphere could get better, it was very noise, and not because of the costumers… We spent 38$ without Tips.

Came here for dinner and was completely satisfied. Cozy spot with delicious food. Started us off with a teapot full of yummy tea. Everything is shareable, large portions. Had leftovers to take home. Food is flavorful and worth it. Will definitely come by again. They also have a lunch special!
