About Happy Family Restaurant - Monterey Park
Welcome to Happy Family Restaurant - Monterey Park, a Chinese restaurant located at 500 N Atlantic Blvd #171, Monterey Park, CA 91754, USA. As a dedicated establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, Happy Family Restaurant offers a unique dining experience centered around vegetarian and vegan interpretations of classic Chinese dishes. You can reach them at (626) 282-8986 or +1 626-282-8986 for inquiries or reservations.
Based on recent customer feedback, dining at Happy Family Restaurant can be a mixed experience. Some patrons have highlighted significant wait times, particularly during peak seasons like Lunar New Year. It's advisable to be prepared for potential delays and to actively monitor the waiting list inside the restaurant, as the order of seating may not strictly adhere to a first-come, first-served basis. Language proficiency may inadvertently play a role in the waiting process, so attentiveness is recommended.
The restaurant's menu structure appears to be a point of concern for some customers. Discrepancies have been noted between the physical menu, take-out menu, and online offerings. Additionally, the organization and categorization of the menu could be improved, potentially with the inclusion of photographs to aid diners in their selections. The current use of "vege" prefixes on an entirely vegetarian menu has also been noted as redundant.
Happy Family Restaurant is known for its generous portion sizes, aligning with a family banquet style of dining. Accordingly, the pricing reflects this, with individual dishes averaging around $17.99. This makes it potentially well-suited for larger groups or those looking to share multiple dishes.
In terms of specific dishes reviewed, the Corn cream and pumpkin soup was described as sweet, reminiscent of canned corn. The Deep-fried tofu received negative feedback for not being served hot or crispy and having minimal batter. The Eggplant with brown sauce was appreciated as a non-spicy eggplant option. Similarly, the Sweet and sour fish was the only non-spicy fish dish available.
One customer reported an issue with their order, receiving a shrimp dish with mushrooms and nuts instead of the Walnut shrimp they requested. While their mother enjoyed the substituted dish, it indicates a potential for order inaccuracies. Overall, the quality of the food was described by some as "meh," with comparisons to better vegetarian options available nearby. Some long-time patrons have expressed disappointment in a perceived decline in food quality, noting issues such as gluey texture, blandness, and excessive oiliness.
The overall dining experience seems to be significantly influenced by the crowd levels, impacting both service speed and the waiting queue. While Happy Family Restaurant may have been highly regarded in the past, recent reviews suggest a decline in both food quality and service consistency. Potential customers should be aware of the reported long wait times, possible menu inconsistencies, and the varying opinions on food quality when considering a visit.
Despite the mixed reviews, Happy Family Restaurant - Monterey Park remains a vegetarian Chinese restaurant offering a wide array of plant-based dishes in a family-style setting. If you are looking for a vegetarian Chinese meal in Monterey Park and are prepared for potential inconsistencies in service and food quality, and are dining with a larger group to take advantage of the portion sizes, you may still find value in exploring their offerings. However, it is recommended to manage expectations based on the recent customer feedback provided.

Customer Reviews
We waited and skipped out on this place last year because the wait was ridiculously long on Lunar New Year. We managed to only wait 30 mins this year because LNY landed on a Weekday. You write your name on the waiting list. Make sure you stay inside to hear your name because these people have no shame. I have witnessed, those that know the language, tried to smooch their way to the top and you need to pay attention and be ready to interfere. There is no order of first come first serve, if a table clears up for a party of 6, they could skip over the list and call that group. It’s terrible. While we were waiting, I studied what to order to save time. The physical menu, take out menu, and on line do not match. It’s so unorganized and not categorized. It needs to be redone with photos. Why put “vege” in front of a word when the entire restaurant is vegetarian! The portions are huge, meant for family banquet style and the price reflects that averaging $17.99 each. We are a party of 2 but ordered: -Corn cream and pumpkin soup ($13.59): Sweet like corn from a can. -Deep fried tofu: Not sure when they fried this because it wasn’t piping hot and the edges were not crispy. It was tofu with barely any batter. It was so bad that we had to tell the server to let the chef know so it doesn’t affect anyone else. -Eggplant w brown sauce ($17.99): This was the only egg plant combo option that wasn’t spicy. -Sweet and sour fish ($19.59): This was the only fish option that wasn’t spicy. -Walnut shrimp: I asked for walnut shrimp but something else came out instead. It was shrimp with mushrooms and nuts. My mom liked it so I didn’t complain. The quality of food was just meh. The crowd impacted the service and queue. I’ve tasted better vegetarian restaurants near by. I can now cross this one off my list. Sadly, we will not return.
It used to be amazing! What happened? The food was gluey, bland and very oily. Nothing was good, we didn’t even bother taking any leftovers. It’s quite a drive for us to get here and we all decided this was our last time 🙁
Great vegetarian Chinese food! We ordered tofu, mushroom and eggplant dish with sweet and sour soup! Very tastey! Great that it’s all vegetarian!
Vegetarian delight!! Although I am not, I do love it here!! The Kung pao chicken is made with oyster mushrooms and it is absolutely my favorite! My other favorite is their assorted casserole.. the “ fish”’taste like seaweed Japanese style is so delicious.. but it is too much lunch for two… a fantastic chinese restaurant for vegetarian!!
Good service from the staff. Food was excellent too. Easy parking by roadside
