About H. L. Peninsula Restaurant
Located at 608 Dubuque Ave in South San Francisco, H. L. Peninsula Restaurant stands as a notable representative within the Chinese Restaurant category, celebrated for its authentic Cantonese and Hong Kong-style cuisine. This establishment has garnered attention from local diners, particularly for its dim sum offerings and its impressive seafood dishes. If you are in the South San Francisco area and seeking a genuine taste of Hong Kong flavors, H. L. Peninsula Restaurant presents a compelling option.
According to early reviews, H. L. Peninsula Restaurant was considered "one of the better and authentic Chinese HK restaurants in the area," with its dim sum being particularly praised during its initial opening period. While one reviewer noted a perceived slight dip in dim sum quality since then, they still maintain that the quality remains "outstanding." This suggests that H. L. Peninsula Restaurant has established a strong foundation for its dim sum, and it continues to be a significant draw for many patrons.
Despite general price increases affecting the restaurant industry, H. L. Peninsula Restaurant is commended for its commitment to maintaining quality. One reviewer explicitly stated that "HL does a good job in maintaining its quality," noting that both lunch and dinner experiences were "fantastic" and that the ingredients used were "quite fresh." This dedication to using fresh ingredients across their menu speaks to the restaurant's overall standards and its focus on providing a satisfying culinary experience.
For those new to the dim sum experience, one seasoned diner offers a valuable tip: the best time to enjoy dim sum is when the restaurant is busy. This ensures a higher turnover of dishes, meaning the dim sum items are continuously being freshly prepared. The reviewer wisely points out that "when dim sum gets cold- it's quality and taste sharply diminishes," underscoring the importance of freshness in enjoying this style of cuisine.
In terms of practical considerations, parking at H. L. Peninsula Restaurant is described as "generally okay," which is often a significant factor for diners in busy areas. The restaurant itself is noted to get "kind of packed," indicating its popularity, but it also offers "a lot of space" to accommodate a significant number of guests. Additionally, its proximity to a Costco Business could be a convenient perk for those looking to combine dining with shopping.
The atmosphere at H. L. Peninsula Restaurant is characterized as "nice" but also "usually a little loud with the conversations and all that's happening," which is often typical of bustling and authentic Chinese restaurants. This lively ambiance can contribute to the overall dining experience, creating a sense of energy and authenticity.
One particularly enthusiastic reviewer recounted a recent large family lunch meal celebration where the seafood was the standout highlight, earning a perfect "10/10" rating. Dishes such as crab, lobster, and seabass were described as "amazing." The reviewer was so impressed with the seafood that they actually found it superior to the restaurant's dim sum, which they acknowledged was already highly regarded. This strong endorsement of the seafood is a significant feature of H. L. Peninsula Restaurant and suggests it's a must-try for seafood lovers.
Adding another dimension to the dining experience, one reviewer mentioned a "great vibe and atmosphere" and particularly enjoyed the "traditional way of enjoying brunch - by ordering food for the whole table and grab random food as they pass by." This description evokes a sense of communal dining and a lively, interactive brunch experience, which could be a unique draw for those seeking a more traditional approach to enjoying Chinese cuisine.
However, it is important to note a contrasting opinion regarding the food. One reviewer found the food to be "too oily and salty" for their taste, mentioning that consuming too much could lead to discomfort. This feedback suggests that while many appreciate the flavors, the preparation style might not suit everyone's dietary preferences. Potential diners who are sensitive to oil or sodium levels might want to inquire about specific dishes or preparation methods.
In summary, H. L. Peninsula Restaurant in South San Francisco offers a diverse culinary experience rooted in authentic Cantonese and Hong Kong traditions. While their dim sum has a strong reputation, the exceptional seafood, as highlighted by one reviewer, appears to be a significant feature that sets them apart. The restaurant provides a lively and spacious environment, suitable for family gatherings and those who enjoy a bustling atmosphere. While the majority of feedback is positive regarding the quality and freshness of the ingredients, some diners have noted concerns about the oiliness and saltiness of the food. For those seeking a taste of authentic Hong Kong cuisine, particularly dim sum and fresh seafood, H. L. Peninsula Restaurant at 608 Dubuque Ave is a place to consider. You can reach them at (650) 616-8168 or +1 650-616-8168 for reservations or inquiries. It's advisable to visit during peak hours for the freshest dim sum and perhaps inquire about dishes if you have specific dietary concerns.

One of the better and authentic Chinese HK restaurants in the area. Their dimsum was much better when they first opened, but the quality is still outstanding. Everything price-wise has gone up. But HL does a good job in maintaining its quality. Both lunch and dinner was fantastic and the ingredients were quite fresh. A little tip for dimsum newbies- you want to go when there is a lot of people, so the cooks keep making the dimsum items fresh. When dimsum gets cold- it's quality and taste sharply diminishes... Anyways, parking is generally okay- and it can get kind of packed here. But there is a lot of space- and also a Costco Business nearby if you need to do some shopping afterwards. The atmosphere is nice- usually a little loud with the conversations and all that's happening- but that is to be expected. I was here recently for a large family lunch meal celebration, and the seafood was 10/10! Crab, lobster, seabass- amazing. The quail was solid too, but it was the seafood that blew me away. You have to try it. I actually think their dishes are superior than their dimsum, which is saying something! Okay, enjoy and hope the photos do the dishes justice.
Great vibe and atmosphere! Love the traditional way of enjoying brunch - by ordering food for the whole table and grab random food as they pass by. Love it! However, the food is too oily and salty for my taste. Can’t eat too much otherwise will feel not so great…
This review might be a little biased, in that I attended a special event, a wedding banquet. The restaurant was rented out for this private celebration. With that In mind, the food was excellent., the service excellent and the atmosphere...it was a GREAT PARTY! Everyone had a great time.
Excellent restaurant for Dim Sum. It's a huge place and it was packed with long wait lines on New Year's Day 2025. There is a lot of parking, but we still had to wait to find open parking spots. The service was great. Very professional. We had a table of 13.
We eat here for dim sum & dinner regularly and the quality have dropped dramatically since they reopened after COVID! The ingredients they use now are lower quality! Prices are very expensive! But prices in the entire Bay Area are stupid high! They automatically add 18% gratuities to the bill! Make sure you look at the bill so you don’t tip more! $300 for these 7 below average dishes!
