Based on recent online reviews, Gum Wah Restaurant is lauded for its enduring quality, friendly service, and a welcoming family atmosphere. Customers have shared their long-term patronage and positive experiences, highlighting specific dishes and the overall comforting nature of the dining experience.
One reviewer described Gum Wah as "probably my favorite spot for a warm bowl of Chinese soup noodle in Oakland." This long-time customer, who has been visiting the restaurant for perhaps almost 40 years, attested to the consistent goodness of the food since their first visit. They specifically recommended giving this "little germ" a try for those seeking friendly service and a family atmosphere. However, they noted that the restaurant is small and therefore might not be suitable for large parties. The reviewer's favorite dish, the Roasted Duck Noodle Soup, was also mentioned and pictured, indicating it as a highly recommended item.
Another reviewer shared a more recent experience when their usual spot was closed, leading them and their grandfather to try Gum Wah, located just two storefronts away. They described Gum Wah as a "big restaurant with lot of seating," contrasting with the previous reviewer's description of it being small. This discrepancy might suggest different perceptions of size or perhaps different dining areas within the establishment. This reviewer also noted that, similar to their usual place, Gum Wah might be considered a "hole in the wall" by American standards, which they personally consider "normal." This could imply a no-frills, authentic, and perhaps more traditional setting.
Before ordering, this reviewer observed what other lunchtime patrons were eating, noting that "it all looked so good" and that most people were ordering lunch special items. Their group ordered several dishes, including chow fun with prawn, rice porridge with fish filet, yin yang fried rice, bitter melon lunch special, and a typical beef string bean lunch special.
The chow fun with prawn received high praise, with the reviewer stating, "The chow fun was amazing! I loved it! It was so flavorful. It's the saucy style chow fun I like too." This highlights Gum Wah's proficiency in preparing flavorful and satisfying noodle dishes, particularly the saucy style chow fun.
The rice porridge with fish filet was also described as "tasty" and noted for having "plenty of fish and 1 whole egg (1000 yr old)," indicating a generous amount of ingredients and the inclusion of a traditional preserved egg, which is a common element in Cantonese-style porridge.
The bitter melon lunch special was deemed "good for bitter melon," suggesting it was well-prepared for those who appreciate this somewhat bitter vegetable, a common ingredient in Chinese cuisine.
However, the yin yang fried rice, which was the dish ordered by this reviewer, "wasn't to par." They expressed disappointment, noting that the rice seemed "old/dry" and the tomato sauce "did not have much taste." Despite this one less-than-stellar dish, the reviewer still gave the place a 5-star rating, primarily because they "would get the chow fun again." They also mentioned seeing another customer with black bean chow fun, expressing a desire to try it on a future visit, indicating a positive overall impression and a willingness to return.
Based on these reviews, Gum Wah Restaurant offers a comforting and authentic Cantonese dining experience. It is particularly known for its flavorful noodle soups, especially the roasted duck noodle soup, and its delicious saucy chow fun with prawn. The rice porridge with fish filet is also a popular choice, offering a traditional and satisfying meal. The availability of lunch specials suggests that Gum Wah provides affordable options during the daytime, likely catering to the local working crowd and residents.
The environment of Gum Wah seems to be a subject of slightly differing perceptions, with one reviewer describing it as small and another as big with lots of seating. It's possible that there are different sections or that the perception of size varies. The "hole in the wall" comment suggests a more traditional and unpretentious setting, focusing on the quality of the food and service rather than elaborate decor. The mention of a family atmosphere by a long-time patron indicates a welcoming and perhaps community-oriented establishment.
The services offered by Gum Wah include dine-in, as both reviewers ate at the restaurant. Takeout is also implied, as customers likely have the option to order food to go. There is no mention of delivery services or catering in these reviews. The acceptance of credit cards is a convenient feature noted by one reviewer.
Features of Gum Wah appear to include its long-standing presence in the community, the consistent quality of its food (especially the noodle soups and chow fun), its friendly service, and its family atmosphere. The affordable lunch specials also seem to be a notable feature, attracting lunchtime crowds. The preparation of traditional Cantonese dishes like rice porridge with preserved egg further highlights its authenticity.
There is no specific promotional information mentioned in the provided reviews. However, the existence of lunch specials suggests that Gum Wah offers value-oriented options during certain hours. To learn about any other potential promotions or specials, local users might want to contact the restaurant directly or inquire during their visit.
In conclusion, Gum Wah Restaurant in Oakland is a long-established Cantonese eatery that comes highly recommended for its comforting and consistently good food, particularly its noodle soups and flavorful chow fun. The friendly service and family atmosphere contribute to a welcoming dining experience. While one reviewer had a less favorable experience with the fried rice, the overall positive feedback, especially regarding the signature dishes and lunch specials, makes Gum Wah a strong contender for those seeking authentic Cantonese cuisine in Oakland.

Probably my favorite spot for a warm bowl of Chinese soup noodle in Oakland. I've been coming to this restaurant forever, perhaps almost 40 years and the foods are always consistently good since my first visit. If you're looking for friendly service and family atmosphere the please give this little germ a try. The restaurant is small so it's not suitable for a large party. Pictured is my favorite bowl: Roasted duck noodle soup. Credit cards accepted.
Our usual place (Joy Luck) was closed! So my Grandpa wanted to go two storefronts down to Gum Wah. It's a big restaurant with lot of seating. Like Joy Luck restaurant, Gum Wah is what Americans would call a hole in the wall (or to me, normal). Before I ordered I saw what others were eating. It all looked so good. It was lunchtime and most people ordered lunch special items. We got chow fun with prawn, rice porridge fish filet, yin yang fried rice, bitter melon lunch special and some typical beef string bean lunch special. The chow fun was amazing. I loved it! It was so flavorful. It's the saucy style chow fun I like too. The rice porridge was tasty. It had plenty of fish and 1 whole egg (1000 yr old). Bitter melon was good for bitter melon. The yin yang fried rice was the dish I ordered, and it wasn't to par. I was kind of sad. The rice seemed old/dry. The tomato sauce did not have much taste. I think I was unlucky! I give this place 5 stars because I would get the chow fun again. Another customer had the black bean chow fun... I wanted it... Would definitely go back!
Totally amazed that Gum Wah opens at 8:30am! Grabbed lunch with pops here one late afternoon. We had the craving for roast duck. We walked into an empty restaurant with plenty of seating available. They have a pretty standard Cantonese/Hong Kong menu. We had... Combination Meat Rice Plate (Soy Sauce Chicken, Roast Duck, Beef Brisket) Chinese Broccoli Roast Duck Wonton Noodle Soup Everything was delicious! Pay with cash, because paying with credit takes super long. Service is good and quick. Place is clean. Prices are super cheap. Good solid spot.
Old school hole in wall restaurant. Had my aunt not suggested their clay pots one day for brunch I would have never known they had such delicious vegetarian rice rolls. My favorite is mushroom and yellow chives. 1 order is so filling and affordable. Under $4 per order and you are stuffed after. Gotta love deals! Their rice plates and clay pots are delicious as well. Sadly I forgot to take pictures. Was super hungry and ate quick hehe will definitely remember to take pictures next time around.
Foods are all good. Beef rice noodle with too much meat. Congee is delicious. I saw how they make the thin rice sheet to wrap the fried stick – youtiao and ordered one: the sheet is great but fried stick is kind of hard. Service is affable. When I tried to get hot water for my ever-presence tea bottle and couldn’t, she said “oh you don’t know” and went on to show me.
