About Great Wall Restaurant
Great Wall Restaurant, located at 178 Pine St in Northampton, Massachusetts (zip code 01062), has established itself as a noteworthy destination within the Chinese Restaurant category, serving the local community and earning praise for its quality and flavorful cuisine. According to customer reviews, Great Wall Restaurant offers some of the finest Chinese food in western Massachusetts, distinguishing itself through its thoughtful preparation methods and commitment to maintaining high standards even under new ownership.
One of the key features highlighted by patrons is the restaurant's dedication to preparing dishes that are not excessively oily or sugary, and importantly, not laden with MSG. This approach appeals to health-conscious diners who appreciate authentic flavors without the heavy additives often found in some Chinese-American cuisine. The emphasis on balanced and natural flavors contributes to a more enjoyable and wholesome dining experience.
A significant development for Great Wall Restaurant is its recent sale to a new owner. Reassuringly for long-time customers, the new management has successfully maintained the quality of the cuisine, preserving some of the beloved old menu items and recipes. This continuity ensures that loyal patrons can still enjoy their favorite dishes prepared to the same high standards they have come to expect. The commitment to upholding the restaurant's established reputation is a testament to the new owner's dedication.
Among the recommended dishes at Great Wall Restaurant are the Chicken Chow Mein and the Shrimp with cashew nuts. These classic Chinese-American dishes have apparently been prepared with a level of excellence that earns them high praise. Additionally, the creamy Crab Rangoons are particularly noteworthy, with a reviewer mentioning that they are made using the "finest ingredients." This suggests a focus on quality that extends even to popular appetizer items.
The environment of Great Wall Restaurant has also seen positive changes under the new ownership. The interior has been repainted with "brighter colors," indicating a refresh and an effort to create a more welcoming and pleasant dining space. This attention to the aesthetics of the restaurant suggests a desire to improve the overall customer experience, making it more inviting for those choosing to dine in.
Complementing the refreshed interior is the reported friendly and accommodating nature of the new staff. Positive interactions with the service team can significantly enhance the dining experience, making guests feel welcome and valued. The welcoming attitude of the new staff at Great Wall Restaurant is a promising sign for both returning and new customers.
In recent years, Great Wall Restaurant seemed to have leaned more towards takeout services. However, a recent reviewer expressed their pleasure at being able to dine in, even noting that they were the only dine-in customer at the time while the takeout service remained busy. This indicates that while takeout is a significant part of their operation, the option to dine in is still available and appreciated by those who prefer it. The brisk takeout business further suggests the continued popularity and reliability of their food for those eating at home.
A unique feature of Great Wall Restaurant is that they offer two menus to choose from, including a "gourmet menu." This provides a wider range of options and caters to different preferences and price points. The gourmet menu likely features more elaborate or specialty dishes, offering an opportunity for diners to explore more nuanced aspects of Chinese cuisine.
One long-time customer shared their go-to dish was the steamed chicken, which they found to be similar to the Hainanise style ginger dish they grew up with. This suggests that Great Wall Restaurant offers dishes that resonate with those seeking more authentic or specific regional flavors beyond the typical American-Chinese fare. The availability of such dishes on their menu is a significant draw for those with particular culinary preferences.
On a "wet and soggy rainy day," the same reviewer opted for a hot pot, finding it particularly comforting and appropriate for the weather. The addition of simple Chinese broccoli provided a "bit of crunch" to the meal, contributing to a satisfying texture. The overall impression of the meal was "savory and delicious," further reinforcing the quality of the food at Great Wall Restaurant.
Based on the provided reviews, the environment of Great Wall Restaurant has been recently updated with brighter colors, suggesting a more inviting and pleasant atmosphere for dine-in customers. While it may have previously focused more on takeout, the option to dine in is available and appreciated. The presence of a gourmet menu also indicates a desire to offer a more diverse and potentially upscale dining experience for those choosing to eat at the restaurant.
The services offered by Great Wall Restaurant include both dine-in and takeout. The takeout service is described as brisk and reliable. The dine-in service is characterized by a friendly and accommodating new staff. The availability of two menus, including a gourmet option, caters to a wider range of culinary preferences and dining experiences.

Customer Reviews
Great Wall Restaurant serves some of the best chinese food you'll find in western mass. It's not oily, overly sugared, nor full of MSG. The Great Wall was recently sold, and the new owner has maintained the quality of cuisine and some of the old menu and recipes. I recommend Chicken Chow Mein, Shrimp with cashew nuts, and their creamy Crab Rangoons, which are made out of the finest ingredients. The interior of the restaurant has been repainted with brighter colors, and the new staff is friendly and accommodating. I look forward to returning to try other dishes.
For the past few years, they seemed to be mostly take out. I was glad to be able to dine in there today, even if I was the only one. Take out service remained brisk though. I liked that they had 2 menus to choose from. I often choose from their gourmet menu. My go-to dish was always their steamed chicken, which is close to the Hainanise style ginger dish I grew up with. Today, being a wet and soggy rainy day , it only seemed appropriate to have a hot pot. The simple Chinese broccoli adds a bit of crunch to my meal. Savory and delicious.
Under NEW OWNERSHIP and WORTH a revisit. They painted and cleaned up the eating area. I’m sure they’ll improve the lighting as business picks up but I was enthralled at how they fixed up the eating area already. The food was good - I had boiled dumplings which I found quite tasty. The spring was good and my life had Moo Goo Gai Pan which she loved. The NEW OWNERS, Fang & Gary, were excited to have us. They were quite friendly and wanted our opinions on the dishes they served us. Phoenix (17) and Gabriel (15) were also very welcoming and warm. They did their jobs well. My pictures are missing - sorry. Try it now!
I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. The food is always delicious and the staff is amazing and goes out of their way for every customer. It is a must go to when I am in town.
Been coming here for years. I know the ownership changed a couple years back. Food i recently got was soooo greasy! I tried to squeeze as much oil out as possible but ive never had egg rolls that bad in my life. Gone downhill and it's a shame.
