As a Chinese restaurant in Hudsonville, Great Lakes Chinese Restaurant has adapted its services. According to a recent customer, they previously offered a buffet but currently only provide carry-out due to staff shortages. This customer frequently orders the coconut shrimp, which they describe as their favorite and consistently prepared to their liking. They also clarified that the coconut shrimp here is not a fried dish but features shrimp with a white coconut sauce served over rice.

Another long-time local patron expressed disappointment with the current state of the restaurant, despite acknowledging friendly owners and staff and timely food preparation. This reviewer described the environment as "filthy," noting issues such as dust, burnt-out lighting, and a cold atmosphere with a portable heater in the lobby. They also raised concerns about the food quality, stating that typically reliable dishes like sweet & sour pork/chicken are often overcooked and oily. The crab rangoons were reported to contain only sour cream without any crab, and the egg rolls are now solely cabbage without meat. This customer noted inconsistency in food preparation despite the friendly service and speed.

In summary, Great Lakes Chinese Restaurant in Hudsonville currently offers carry-out service only. While one customer enjoys the consistently prepared coconut shrimp, another long-time patron has observed a decline in the restaurant's cleanliness and food quality, despite the friendly and efficient service. Potential customers may want to consider these recent and contrasting experiences when deciding to order from Great Lakes Chinese Restaurant.

I used to LOVE coming here for the buffet. Unfortunately they have such a shortage on staff, they only offer carry out now. I almost always order the coconut shrimp-my fave- and it’s almost always exactly the same, which is good, because it’s my fave 😆. 🥥 🍤 I will say, this is not a fried dish, so if you order coconut shrimp, don’t expect that- it’s a white coconut sauce over (steamed? Boiled?) shrimp and served over rice- see pic. The food was out quickly and the service was good

I Want to like this long time local place but despite the great reviews, it’s not what it’s is claimed to be. First, the place is filthy. Dust clumps hanging from the ceiling and vents, the lighting is nearly all burnt out; including in the kitchen area. The place is cold and there is a big plug-in electric heater in the lobby area. The food……something that is a safe staple at most Chinese restaurants like sweet & sour pork/chicken is always overcooked. Almost like the oil wasn’t hot enough and then the food was left in so long that it gets saturated with oil and the meat becomes tough and inedible. The crab ragoons have zero crab or imitation crab. Just a massive glob of sour cream. The egg rolls no longer have meat in them and are only cabbage. The only thing consistent about the food prep is the inconsistency. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and everything is prepared in a timely manner. It’s sad to see a once bustling and great place fall to this level. We keep giving them chances in hopes things will get better but it continues to decline.

We’ve been using this restaurant take out for many years. The staff is courteous and the food is always ready on time. Last night I noticed how run down it has become. Dirty entry way with a sign that was taped up 5 years ago, for the first time I noticed that our sweet and sour chicken was way overcooked and tough. Sad to see this bustling place come to a sad ending. It will be a long time before we order again. They need to clean up the place!

Placed an order online for our family. Had the confirmation email sent. Went to pickup and the pickup desk said they didn't see our order. After explaining how we had the confirmation email and did some trial and error with giving them both my name, my husband's name, and both of our phone numbers to try and find the order in their system: they still couldn't find it. Understandable that accidents or errors can happen, but there was never any attempt to make it right or help us out. It was just a "Yeah, I'm not seeing it." with the customer service being short, rushed, and unhelpful.

Ordered kung pao chicken which they call kung bo, and Ordered it to be extra spicy with fried rice, with crab ragoons and a egg roll, the egg roll was good, crab ragoons was just cream cheese, fried rice was yellow with no veggies or seasoning and kung poa had no spice or heat and all veggies with a few pieces of hard deep fried chicken, never thought a Chinese restaurant couldn't make there own food
