About Great Eastern Restaurant

Welcome to Great Eastern Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant located at 649 Jackson St in the heart of San Francisco's historic Chinatown. While the platform category is listed as Chinese Restaurant, it's worth noting that based on customer reviews mentioning Dim Sum, Great Eastern Restaurant offers a range of traditional Chinese cuisine, which can often include seafood options within its broader menu. This establishment has also gained a unique distinction as a reported favorite spot of former President Barack Obama, adding an element of intrigue for both locals and tourists.

One customer who dined at Great Eastern for brunch specifically mentioned trying their Dim Sum. While they noted that two out of the six items they initially ordered were unavailable, the dishes they did receive were described as "delicious and fresh." This suggests that the quality of the food itself can be a strong point for Great Eastern Restaurant, particularly concerning the freshness of their ingredients. However, the issue of menu item availability might be something to consider when planning a visit.

Regarding the service, the review provided a somewhat neutral assessment, describing it as "ok." The server was noted to be quiet and not particularly helpful, with the possibility of a language barrier being suggested as a potential contributing factor. This indicates that while the service may not be overtly negative, it might also not be exceptionally attentive or communicative, which could impact the overall dining experience for some patrons.

A significant concern raised in the review pertained to the cleanliness of the restrooms, which were described as "dirty" and left the diner with a "yuk feeling." This is a crucial aspect of a restaurant's environment and can significantly detract from the overall impression, even if the dining area itself is clean and tidy, as noted by the reviewer. The discrepancy between the cleanliness of the restaurant and the restrooms is something potential customers might want to keep in mind.

Adding a unique element to the profile of Great Eastern Restaurant is its reported connection to former President Barack Obama. One reviewer mentioned "stumbling into President Obama’s favorite Chinese spot in SF Chinatown," noting that while the food was great, a framed photo of the former president seemed to be a significant point of interest. This association could be a draw for those interested in dining at a place with such a notable connection and might even serve as a minor tourist attraction within Chinatown.

The Instagram handle "Foodie.Catlady" suggests that the reviewer may have shared their experience on social media, potentially with photos of the food and the framed Obama photo. This indicates that the restaurant's reputation, including its connection to the former president, extends beyond traditional review platforms.

Based on the limited review information, it's challenging to provide extensive details about the restaurant's environment beyond the fact that the dining area was "fairly clean and tidy," in contrast to the restrooms. There is no description of the decor, ambiance, or overall atmosphere of the restaurant. Similarly, the reviews do not offer insights into specific features of their cuisine beyond the availability of Dim Sum and the freshness and deliciousness of the ordered items. There is no mention of specific signature dishes or culinary specialties.

Furthermore, the provided information does not include any promotional details about Great Eastern Restaurant. There are no mentions of special offers, discounts, events, or any other promotional activities that might be relevant to local users.

In conclusion, Great Eastern Restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown offers Chinese cuisine, including Dim Sum, with reports of fresh and delicious food. A unique aspect of this establishment is its reported status as a favorite of former President Barack Obama, which is highlighted by a framed photo within the restaurant. However, potential diners should be aware of mixed feedback regarding the service, which has been described as quiet and not particularly helpful, possibly due to language barriers. Additionally, the cleanliness of the restrooms has been noted as a significant concern. While the dining area is reportedly clean, the state of the restrooms might be a deterrent for some. Overall, Great Eastern Restaurant presents a mixed picture, with potential for tasty and fresh Chinese food and a notable presidential connection, but with areas for improvement in service attentiveness and restroom maintenance.

We dined for brunch and had Dim sum. We ordered 6 items of which two were not available. The service was ok but the server was quiet and not very helpful, perhaps if could have been a language barrier. However, what we did order was delicious and fresh. The only thing we didn’t like was the state of the restrooms which were dirty and gave us a yuk feeling. A shame because the Resturant itself was fairly clean and tidy.

The food is quite authentic Cantonese cuisine. The quality of food is well maintained and is tasty. 😋 The waiters are friendly and well serve the customers when they need more help. They give customers enough privacy and time to enjoy their own sharing moments. 👍👍

We recently dined at Great Eastern Restaurant in San Francisco, and the overall experience was delightful. While the pricing may lean towards the higher side for portion sizes that are not overly generous, the flavor and taste of the dishes make up for it. The exception was the spring roll, which didn't quite meet expectations. The service was commendable, and the restaurant maintained a clean ambiance, although the interior showed signs of age. The downstairs restroom, although aged, did not compromise cleanliness. However, it's worth noting that the downstairs location could be challenging for individuals with disabilities due to the stairs. Despite these considerations, the dining experience was memorable, especially with the authentic Peking duck, chicken feet, and fried rice. A standout was the tofu skin with ginko nuts, which added a unique and delightful touch to the meal. If you're in Chinatown, San Francisco, Great Eastern Restaurant is a must-try for those seeking an authentic and flavorful culinary adventure.
