Welcome to Great China, a distinguished Chinese restaurant located at 2190 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94704, USA. As a prominent establishment in the Chinese Restaurant category, Great China has been serving the Berkeley community for many years, evolving from a smaller location to its current spacious setting. Based on the available customer reviews, Great China has cultivated a loyal following over the years. One long-time patron, who has been visiting for two decades since its original smaller location a couple of blocks away, considers it their favorite Chinese restaurant in Berkeley. This longevity speaks volumes about the consistent quality and appeal of Great China's offerings. The reviewer specifically praised the tremendous food, highlighting its freshness and perfect preparation. For those looking for value, the lunch specials are recommended as a "great deal" with generous portions. The menu boasts excellent shrimp and fish dishes, along with notable vegetable sides like sautéed green beans and snow pea leaves, indicating a diverse range of well-executed options.
Another reviewer shared their experience visiting Great China in its new, more spacious location. They noted the minimalistic yet presumably comfortable ambiance of the new setting. Importantly, they echoed the sentiment regarding the food quality, describing it as "GREAT!" While acknowledging that the prices might be slightly higher, the reviewer emphasized that the cost reflects the discernible quality of the ingredients and the overall preparation. Their order of three dishes, tea, and rice resulted in a total that was considered "a lot," but they reiterated that "it is the quality you are paying for!" This suggests that Great China prioritizes the use of high-quality ingredients and meticulous cooking techniques, justifying a potentially higher price point for a superior culinary experience.
The mention of a bar with a "lot of wines" indicates that Great China offers a selection of beverages to complement their cuisine. While one reviewer had not personally tried the wine offerings, the presence of a well-stocked bar suggests an effort to enhance the dining experience for those who appreciate wine pairings with their meals. This could be a notable feature for local users looking for a more sophisticated Chinese dining experience.
In terms of environment, the transition to a "spacious and very minimalistic looking" new location suggests a modern and potentially more comfortable dining area compared to its previous smaller setting. While "minimalistic" implies a clean and uncluttered aesthetic, it does not detract from the expectation of a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere for enjoying a meal. The increased space could also mean better accommodation for larger groups and a more relaxed dining experience overall.
Regarding services, Great China primarily functions as a dine-in restaurant, offering a full menu of Chinese dishes. The positive comments about the food being "perfectly prepared" and the emphasis on quality suggest a focus on attentive kitchen service. The presence of a bar also indicates beverage service for dine-in customers. To determine if they offer takeout or delivery options, local users should contact the restaurant directly.
Features of Great China include its long-standing reputation for excellence in Berkeley, a commitment to using fresh and high-quality ingredients, and a menu that includes well-regarded shrimp and fish dishes, as well as flavorful vegetable sides. The availability of lunch specials with generous portions offers value during the daytime. Furthermore, the presence of a bar with a significant wine selection adds another dimension to the dining experience. The move to a spacious new location indicates an ongoing investment in providing a comfortable and enhanced environment for their patrons.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. However, local users are encouraged to inquire directly with Great China about any ongoing specials, seasonal dishes, or lunch deals that might be of interest. Given their history and reputation, it is likely that they continue to offer popular lunch specials, as mentioned by one reviewer.
In conclusion, Great China at 2190 Bancroft Way in Berkeley stands out as a highly recommended Chinese restaurant with a long history of serving exceptional food. Praised for its freshness, perfect preparation, and high-quality ingredients, Great China offers a dining experience that justifies its potentially higher price point. Customer Reviews
Great China is probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in Berkeley. I’ve been coming here for 20 years when it was a tiny restaurant a couple blocks from the current location. The food is tremendous and is always fresh and perfectly prepared. I think the lunch specials are a great deal with big portions. The shrimp dishes are all excellent and so is the fish. And I love the sautéed green beans and the snow pea leaves. There’s a bar with a lot of wines but I’ve never tried anything here.
The last time I went to Great China was when they were in their old location. This new location is spacious and very minimalistic looking. For the food, it is GREAT! For the price it is slightly pricier, but you can taste and see the quality! Everything was on point and so good! I ordered 3 dishes, tea, and rice. The total is a lot, but like I stated before it is the quality you are paying for!
Great China is a true gem for Chinese cuisine lovers. From the moment you step inside, you are greeted with warm hospitality and a cozy, authentic ambiance that instantly makes you feel at home. The menu offers an impressive variety of traditional and modern Chinese dishes, each prepared with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. We started with the hot and sour soup, which was perfectly balanced – not too spicy, with perfect amount of tanginess that awakened the taste buds. For the main course, the Peking Duck is a must-try, with its crispy skin and succulent meat, served with thin pancakes, sauce and green onions. What sets Great China apart is their attention to detail. Every dish is beautifully presented, and the portions are generous without being overwhelming. The service was prompt and attentive without being intrusive, and the staff was knowledgeable, offering great recommendations. Whether you’re looking for a casual lunch, a family dinner, or a celebratory feast, Great China delivers an unforgettable dining experience. I can’t recommend it enough for anyone seeking top-notch Chinese food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Five stars!
one of the best chinese food in the entire bay area. they have beijing duck that is better than those in beijing.
I’ve had this place on my list since moving back to the East Bay, so when I had the opportunity I went for a visit. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken Lunch set which came with Hot & Sour Soup along with a salad and egg roll. The soup came out hot and was good followed by my platter. I was excited to dig in as it looked good, but I was let down by the taste. First off, there was no spice to the kung pao chicken. It tasted like a generic Chinese-American dish with no real flavor. I would say that Panda Express’ version is a lot tastier. The salad was just shredded lettuce with some dressing and the egg roll tasted like it was made hours before and sat under a hot lamp. I was disappointed because the restaurant is very nice and the service was friendly and quick, but with the food lacking in flavor, I left underwhelmed.
