About Great China Express
Welcome to Great China Express, a Chinese restaurant located at 1833 E 4th St, Ontario, CA 91764, USA. As a Chinese restaurant in Ontario, Great China Express offers a familiar range of Chinese dishes. You can contact them at (909) 988-3268 or via their mobile number, +1 909-988-3268.
Based on recent customer reviews, Great China Express presents a somewhat unique and potentially nostalgic dining experience. One reviewer noted that the restaurant seems to be "straight out of the 1970's!" and that "The decor and equipment is the same as when they opened." This suggests that the environment of Great China Express has a retro aesthetic, which might appeal to some diners looking for a sense of nostalgia or a casual, long-established eatery. Being described as a "Chinese bowl place in an older shopping center" further paints a picture of a no-frills, perhaps traditional, neighborhood Chinese restaurant.
A surprising and noteworthy feature of Great China Express, highlighted by both reviewers, is their offering of Louisiana Fried Chicken. One customer who noticed it mentioned that it "looked amazing" and was unexpected for a Chinese restaurant. They learned that the fried chicken is cooked to order and takes approximately 20 minutes to prepare, which prevented them from trying it during that visit due to time constraints. However, they were informed that many customers call ahead to order the fried chicken, indicating its popularity among some patrons. This suggests that Great China Express might be catering to a broader range of tastes beyond just Chinese cuisine, offering a unique fusion or perhaps two distinct specialties under one roof.
The owner and cook at Great China Express were described as "very nice" by one reviewer, suggesting a positive interaction with the staff and potentially a welcoming atmosphere created by the people running the establishment. Friendly service can often enhance the overall dining experience, even if other aspects are perceived differently.
However, another reviewer provided a more critical assessment of the traditional Chinese food offerings. While they found the fried rice and chow mein to be "pretty...okay," they described the beef garlic as "okay, not great" and the teriyaki chicken as "sub par." This reviewer noted that the teriyaki chicken had "almost an old taste to it, like if it had been sitting out for a while," raising concerns about the freshness and quality of this particular dish. They were worried about getting sick from it and ultimately had to eat around it and throw it out. This negative experience with a main dish led the reviewer to conclude that they would seek Chinese food elsewhere in the future.
This same reviewer also expressed skepticism about the quality of the Louisiana Fried Chicken, reasoning that if the Chinese food wasn't prepared well, the fried chicken might not be any better. This highlights a concern that potential customers might have regarding the consistency and overall quality of the food served at Great China Express, especially given the contrasting styles of cuisine offered.
Despite the negative feedback on some of the Chinese dishes, the positive comments about the owner and cook being nice suggest a human element that some customers might appreciate. However, as one reviewer pointed out, friendliness alone might not be enough to justify a return visit if the food quality is not up to par.
Given these mixed reviews, it is difficult to definitively characterize the overall experience at Great China Express. The restaurant offers a nostalgic environment and the unexpected addition of Louisiana Fried Chicken as a specialty that some customers seem to enjoy enough to pre-order. However, there are also concerns raised about the freshness and quality of some of the traditional Chinese dishes. Potential customers might find the unique combination of offerings intriguing, but should also be aware of the reported inconsistencies in food quality.
Without information on any specific promotions or unique services beyond the Louisiana Fried Chicken, it is challenging to highlight any particular incentives for local users to choose Great China Express over other Chinese restaurants in the area. The main features appear to be its retro ambiance and the availability of both Chinese cuisine and Louisiana Fried Chicken.
For local users in Ontario considering Great China Express, it might be worthwhile to inquire about the Louisiana Fried Chicken, especially if the idea of trying this unexpected offering is appealing. However, based on the feedback regarding some of the Chinese dishes, it might be prudent to approach with tempered expectations or perhaps inquire about the freshness and preparation methods of specific items. Visiting the restaurant might also give a better sense of the 1970s ambiance and the overall dining experience.
To gather more information about their menu, the preparation of their Louisiana Fried Chicken, and any other details, you can contact Great China Express directly at (909) 988-3268 or +1 909-988-3268. Asking about the freshness of their ingredients and the preparation of their dishes might also help in making an informed decision.
In conclusion, Great China Express in Ontario, CA, is a Chinese restaurant with a distinctive 1970s decor that also surprisingly serves Louisiana Fried Chicken, which is reportedly popular among some customers who call ahead to order it. While the owner and cook have been described as nice, reviews on the traditional Chinese food are mixed, with some dishes being deemed just okay and others, like the teriyaki chicken, receiving negative feedback regarding freshness and taste. Potential customers might be intrigued by the unique combination of cuisines but should be aware of the reported inconsistencies in food quality when making their dining choices.

This place is straight out of the 1970's! The decor and equipment is the same as when they opened. It's a Chinese bowl place in an older shopping center, so really what can you expect? But - guess what ? They make Louisiana Fried Chicken! Not something I would expect here but it looked amazing. I didn't get to try it as they said they only cook it to order and it takes 20 minutes. I couldn't wait but they say many of their customers call ahead to order it. So next time I will for sure. The owner and cook are very nice.
So where do I start with this review? I suppose I'll start with the food since it's suppose to be the main attraction. To be fair the fried rice and chow mein were pretty...okay, which should be rightly so since it IS a Chinese restaurant, after all. I ordered the beef garlic and teriyaki chicken, the beef was okay, not great but the chicken was sub par, it had almost an old taste to it, like if it had been siting out for a while. I was worried if I ate it, it would make me sick. I actually had to eat around it and throw it out. I think for any future chinese food I'll go somewhere, anywhere else. As a side note they also serve Louisiana style fried chicken but in all honesty, if you can't do Chinese food right as a Chinese food restaurant, then why would the Louisiana style fried chicken be any better? The lady behind the counter was nice, but not nice enough to justify going back to this restaurant.
Great China Express is a Chinese restaurant in Ontario, CA. We visited this place once. It’s a small Chinese restaurant with a limited seating arrangement. We ordered Special Combo Platter. The food was below average and overpriced considering the taste of the food.
This place has great customer service. I ordered fried wontons 5 min wait for fresh wontons, she even gave me extra sweet & sour sauce. I went in about 130 it was not busy, place was clean had a tv playing.
This was my first visit here while on a business trip. Wanted some Chinese food while I was out of town and found this little place. Assuming the two people there were the owners because they were friendly and very accommodating. Food was top notch and almost better than my local restaurant I choose back home. Helpings were large and I didn't go hungry that night. I know I will be back.
