About Gourmet Dim Sum and Cafe
Located at 651 Clement St in San Francisco, Gourmet Dim Sum and Cafe offers a convenient option for those seeking tasty and affordable Chinese cuisine, specializing primarily in dim sum for takeout. While the name suggests a cafe setting, current customer feedback indicates that seating for dine-in customers is not available. Despite this limitation, the establishment has garnered positive reviews for the quality of its dim sum and its reasonable prices, making it a noteworthy option for locals looking to enjoy these Cantonese delicacies at home.
The environment of Gourmet Dim Sum and Cafe, based on the available information, is primarily geared towards takeout service. The absence of seating for customers suggests a focus on efficient preparation and packaging of food for off-site consumption. While the ambiance of a traditional sit-down restaurant might be missing, the emphasis appears to be on providing quality food at good value. One reviewer noted a bit of a wait due to limited staffing at times, indicating that the popularity of the food can lead to queues, especially during busy periods. However, the eventual arrival of a second staff member suggests an effort to manage customer flow.
The services at Gourmet Dim Sum and Cafe are centered around providing efficient takeout of their dim sum offerings. While one reviewer described the service as "perfunctory," this might be attributed to the focus on quickly serving a potentially high volume of takeout orders with limited staff. The availability of a second staff member during busier times suggests an awareness of the need to expedite service. It's important to note that the primary service model appears to be geared towards getting food to customers for enjoyment elsewhere, rather than providing a full sit-down dining experience.
The key feature of Gourmet Dim Sum and Cafe is its extensive selection of dim sum at good prices. Customers have specifically praised several items. The "hargow" (shrimp dumplings) and "siu mai" (pork and shrimp dumplings) are highlighted as being the best among the items enjoyed. The "turnip cakes" also received positive feedback, indicating a mastery of classic dim sum staples. Another praised item is the "shrimp and chive dumplings," described as "soft and plump." The "bbq pork buns" are also mentioned positively. Additionally, the "pork dumplings wrapped in wonton skins" are noted for being "huge," offering good value for their price and being "soft and not too salty." These specific mentions provide a clear indication of the popular and well-regarded items on their menu.
However, some limitations were noted in the reviews. At the time of one customer's visit, only plain rice noodles were available, and these were described as a little thicker than preferred. Furthermore, the usual sauce for rice noodles was not provided, and the restaurant does not offer hot sauce. These points might be relevant for customers with specific preferences for these accompaniments. The lack of seating for customers is also a significant feature, as it dictates that all orders are for takeout only.
The consistent mention of "good prices" suggests that Gourmet Dim Sum and Cafe offers an affordable option for enjoying dim sum in San Francisco. This value proposition, combined with the positive feedback on the taste and quality of several key dim sum items, makes it an attractive choice for budget-conscious consumers who do not require a dine-in experience. The fact that customers are willing to wait, even with limited staffing at times, further underscores the appeal of their offerings.

Customer Reviews
We enjoyed the dim sum takeout items overall, but the best was the hargow and siu mai. The turnip cakes were also good. They only had plain rice noodles available at the time. It was a little thicker than we are used to. They did not provide the usual sauce for the rice noodle. And they also do not have hot sauce. Wish they had seating for customers. It was a bit of a long wait because there was only one staff but eventually a second one came along to help because a line was forming. Service was perfunctory.
Good prices. Soft and plump shrimp and chive dumplings, bbq pork buns and soft and not too salty, pork dumplings wrapped in wonton skins are huge.
Great thin skin on the har gow. They have a sign up that says cash only. PS in response to the comment about shark fin — you’re not getting shark fin for $3.50 for 3 dumplings, the name is in reference to the shape
This is a standard dim sum take-out only restaurant. There weren't any fried donut rolls to go with the porridge so I decided to get dim sum only. I don't get how some dim sum restaurants offer porridge but not the fried donuts. Soy sauce chow mein could go well with porridge but, that was sold out. The redeeming quality is the size and taste of their pork dim sum, shrimp dim sum and turnip cake. The line might get long as there is only one person working.
It was all yummy. I ate the sesame ball before I took a pic. Shrimp dumpling, taro, turnip cake. The lady warmed the cakes in the microwave. Turnip cake was still crunchy and smooth inside.
