About Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant
Located at 238 NW 4th Ave in Portland, Oregon, Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant operates within the Chinese Restaurant category, specializing in Cantonese cuisine. Based on the limited customer reviews available, opinions on this establishment appear to be divided. While one reviewer highlighted the quality of certain dishes and the authenticity of the Cantonese food, another expressed significant dissatisfaction with both the food and the surrounding environment of Old Town Chinatown.
Regarding the environment of Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant itself, the reviews provide limited direct information. One reviewer's comment about the "run down Old Town Chinatown" becoming a negative aspect of their visit suggests that the experience is somewhat influenced by the neighborhood's current state. However, this comment does not directly address the interior ambiance or cleanliness of the restaurant itself. The starkly contrasting negative review makes no mention of the restaurant's interior, focusing instead on the food and service issues encountered. Therefore, based solely on these two reviews, it is difficult to form a comprehensive picture of the restaurant's environment.
In terms of services, the positive review mentions a return visit after years, implying that Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant has been a long-standing establishment serving the community. The fact that the reviewer specifically came back for the Cantonese food suggests a certain level of reputation or positive past experiences. However, the negative review details a very poor service experience, although specifics about the service interaction are not provided beyond the overall negative sentiment implied by the phrase "Lovely place. Had a fantastic time. Left the food. Yuck!" This extreme contrast makes it challenging to objectively assess the typical level of service at Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant.
The features of Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant, based on the positive review, include its specialization in Cantonese Chinese food. The reviewer specifically called out the "Ginger beef" and "wet chow fun" as being "quite good," indicating that these are potentially signature or popular dishes. Cantonese cuisine is known for its emphasis on fresh ingredients and delicate flavors, often featuring seafood, rice dishes, and stir-fries. The mention of these specific dishes suggests that Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant aims to offer authentic flavors of this culinary tradition. However, the negative review paints a very different picture of the food quality, describing the beef as "fatty and jiggly" and the mushrooms as "tough and hard." This significant discrepancy in food quality reports makes it difficult to ascertain the typical standard of their dishes.
Promotional information or current specials are not mentioned in the provided reviews. Therefore, it is not possible to comment on any specific promotions that Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant might be offering to attract customers.
One significant factor that emerges from the reviews, though not directly about the restaurant itself, is the state of Old Town Chinatown, where Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant is located. The positive reviewer expressed sadness at how "run down" the area has become, noting it as the only real negative aspect of their return visit. The negative reviewer was even more critical of the surroundings, mentioning "nothing but drunk homeless people to look at and engage with." This suggests that the neighborhood's condition might impact the overall dining experience for some patrons, regardless of the restaurant's internal qualities.
The stark contrast between the two reviews presents a challenge in providing an objective introduction. One reviewer found the Cantonese food to be good, specifically mentioning the ginger beef and wet chow fun, while the other had a severely negative experience with the food, citing issues with the beef and mushrooms, and even noting lipstick on the dishes. This level of inconsistency in feedback is concerning and suggests that the dining experience at Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant might be highly variable.
Given the conflicting reports, potential customers should be aware of the mixed feedback. While Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant may offer good Cantonese cuisine, as suggested by one reviewer's positive experience with specific dishes, there are also serious concerns raised by another reviewer regarding food quality and hygiene. Additionally, the surrounding environment of Old Town Chinatown appears to be a significant negative factor for at least one of the reviewers.
In conclusion, Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant located in Portland's Old Town Chinatown, specializing in Cantonese cuisine. While one customer found their ginger beef and wet chow fun to be quite good, another reported significant issues with the food quality and cleanliness. The surrounding area of Old Town Chinatown was also noted as a negative aspect by both reviewers. Potential customers should consider these contrasting opinions and the reported conditions of the neighborhood when deciding whether to dine at Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant.

Good Cantonese Chinese food. Ginger beef and wet chow fun are quite good. Sad to see how run down Old Town Chinatown has become, but that was the only real negative about going there again for the first time in years.
Nothing but drunk homeless people to look at and engage with. Beef was fatty and jiggly. Mushrooms were tough and hard. Lipstick all over our dishes. Lovely place. Had a fantastic time. Left the food. Yuck!
It smelled like mop water and was cold inside. However.....the food and service were fantastic! Some of the best Chinese food I've had in a very long time. Huge portions, good prices. I will definitely be making a return visit.
Great food and fast service. We would have tried everything on the menu if not for the inflation and gas prices. 10/10 would recommend the fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. Their spicy beef dish is not spicy unless you think black pepper is “hot”.
Our go to for Chinese food in the Portland area. Update 11/11/23 - Dined here on Saturday evening around 6pm. It was not busy at all. The dishes ordered- Ma Pao Tofu, cashew nut chicken (gluten free), crispy noodle chicken chow mein, and pot stickers. Large dishes and plenty for take home leftovers. All great as usual.
