About Golden City Restaurant
Golden City Restaurant, located at 1418 N School St in Honolulu, Hawaii, falls under the platform category of "Chinese Restaurant," offering a taste of Cantonese cuisine to the local community. Based on the available customer reviews, Golden City Restaurant presents a mixed experience, with high praise for its food quality and authenticity, but some reservations regarding its customer service.
One reviewer highlighted the food as "good" and the prices as "reasonable," suggesting that Golden City Restaurant offers a satisfying culinary experience at a fair cost. However, this positive feedback was contrasted with concerns about the service. The reviewer described the service as not feeling "welcoming" and lacking attentiveness. A specific incident was mentioned where, upon payment, a staff member audibly reviewed the tip amount written on the receipt, which the reviewer perceived as "rude." Despite this, the reviewer noted their standard practice of tipping generously, especially for good service, which they felt was not the case on this particular occasion. While acknowledging that it might have been an isolated incident ("maybe just one of those days?"), this experience left a less favorable impression, contrasting with the positive experiences of the reviewer's mother, who apparently "loves this place." Ultimately, while the reviewer intends to eat at Golden City Restaurant again occasionally for convenience, it will not be their first choice.
In contrast, another reviewer offered glowing praise for Golden City Restaurant, emphasizing its masterful blend of "authentic Cantonese flavor with island charm." This review specifically highlighted the "pepper salty fried chicken wings" as a standout dish, commending their "perfect balance of crispness and juiciness" and the "spicy, salty delight" of the seasoning. The Cantonese-style fried dishes, in general, were described as "equally impressive," showcasing traditional cooking techniques that evoke a sense of "home and nostalgia." This reviewer found each dish to be a "harmonious symphony of textures and flavors," carefully orchestrated to ensure a satisfying experience with every bite. The dining experience was further enhanced by the "dedicated staff" and a "pleasing ambiance," leading the reviewer to highly recommend Golden City Restaurant as a "gem" for anyone seeking a memorable meal and an exciting journey through the culinary heritage of Canton.
The contrasting reviews suggest that the experience at Golden City Restaurant can vary. While the quality and authenticity of the food, particularly the Cantonese fried dishes and the pepper salty fried chicken wings, seem to be a consistent highlight for some, the level of customer service might be an area for potential improvement or inconsistency, as noted by at least one reviewer.
Regarding the environment of Golden City Restaurant, the second reviewer mentioned a "pleasing ambiance," which implies a comfortable and enjoyable setting for dining. However, the first review did not provide any details about the restaurant's atmosphere. Without further information, it's challenging to provide a comprehensive description of the restaurant's décor or overall feel. It is likely a casual dining environment, given its nature as a local Chinese restaurant, but the specifics remain unknown based on the provided text.
In terms of services, Golden City Restaurant undoubtedly offers dine-in options, as both reviews describe eating at the establishment. It is also highly probable that they provide takeout services, which is a common offering for Chinese restaurants catering to local communities. However, this is not explicitly stated in the provided reviews. It would be reasonable to assume that customers can place orders over the phone for pickup, given the availability of their phone numbers: (808) 841-0287 and +1 808-841-0287.
The standout features of Golden City Restaurant, according to the positive review, include its authentic Cantonese flavors, the exceptional pepper salty fried chicken wings, and the well-executed Cantonese-style fried dishes. The blend of traditional techniques with a hint of "island charm" suggests a unique culinary identity. The dedication of the staff, as perceived by one reviewer, also contributes positively to the overall dining experience for some customers.

In conclusion, Golden City Restaurant in Honolulu appears to be a local Chinese eatery that excels in providing authentic and flavorful Cantonese cuisine, with dishes like the pepper salty fried chicken wings receiving high praise. The ambiance is described as pleasing by one reviewer. However, there might be inconsistencies in customer service, as noted by another. Customer Reviews
Food is good, and the prices are reasonable. Unfortunately for me, it's the service. Doesn't feel welcoming, and not as much attentive to service. And then when I paid, the lady looked at the receipt where I signed and wrote tip, reading out loud as if she was checking my homework to make sure it's "good". Felt kind of rude, but I make sure to always tip 18% when dining out, MORE IF THE SERVICE IS GREAT. But it wasn't. Maybe just one of those days? My mom loves this place, I don't see why due to their "customer service" relations. I'll still eat here from time to time but it won't be often and it won't be on the corner of my head. Moreso, when it's convenient.
Golden City Restaurant in Hawaii masterfully blends authentic Cantonese flavor with island charm. Their pepper salty fried chicken wings stand out with their perfect balance of crispness and juiciness, while the seasoning is a spicy, salty delight that tingles the taste buds. The Cantonese-style fried dishes are equally impressive, showcasing traditional cooking techniques that evoke a sense of home and nostalgia. Each dish is a harmonious symphony of textures and flavors, carefully orchestrated to ensure each bite is as satisfying as the last. From their dedicated staff to the pleasing ambiance, Golden City delivers a dining experience that's an exciting journey through the culinary heritage of Canton. I highly recommend this gem to anyone seeking a memorable meal.
Large portions so go hungry! The egg drop soup and fried pork chops were very good.
For over 30yrs, I've known GOLDEN CITY CHINESE RESTAURANT to serve one of the best Cantonese style Chinese dishes in Honolulu. Located just blocks down from Kamehameha Shopping Center on N School Street and on the corner of Houghtailing Street they once shared the area with Chevron, today Texeco Service Station. Open everyday, not only do they serve delicious food but very reasonable priced. Our family favorite is the Cold Ginger Chicken. Ample parking and they recently reopened their dinning area. Groups & Parties are welcome.
