About Golden City III
Golden City III is a Chinese restaurant located at 8 Old Fox Hill Rd in Hampton, Virginia, serving the local community within the Chinese Restaurant category. This introduction aims to provide an objective assessment of Golden City III based on recent customer reviews found online. It is important to note that the feedback is largely negative, raising concerns about food quality and consistency.
One reviewer, who was not local to the area but chose Golden City III based on its 4.4-star rating, expressed extreme disappointment with their experience, stating it was "one of the worse Chinese food places I’ve ever had in my life." This significant discrepancy between the perceived rating and the actual experience is noteworthy. The customer ordered a variety of dishes, including two large shrimp fried rice, four chicken wings, one small shrimp and broccoli, and two egg rolls, intended for themselves and their three children, who reportedly enjoy shrimp fried rice.
The review detailed several issues with the food. The shrimp fried rice was described as "over cooked, mushy, and dry," a combination of textures that would likely be unappetizing. While the shrimp itself "seemed fresh," the "added egg tasted weird," further detracting from the dish. The chicken wings were criticized for being "fatty" and not tasting fresh "AT ALL." The only item that received a neutral comment was the egg rolls, which were deemed "ok." Due to the poor quality of the shrimp fried rice and chicken, the reviewer and their children collectively confirmed it was "disgusting," leading them to discard the shrimp and broccoli without even tasting it. Adding to their negative experience, the reviewer reported that not long after consuming the shrimp fried rice and chicken, their stomachs began to hurt, suggesting a potential issue with the food's freshness or preparation. The reviewer concluded by expressing regret over their $40 purchase, which they felt was a "WASTED" expense, and vowed never to return.
Adding to the negative feedback, another customer provided an even more direct and critical assessment, stating, "This place is garbage!" This strong condemnation suggests a severely unsatisfactory experience. This reviewer also indicated a decline in quality over time, mentioning that they "used to eat here all the time" but now, upon deciding to eat there again, found their food to be "all wrong and undone!" This implies a significant drop in standards regarding both order accuracy and the proper cooking of the food.
Considering these two recent reviews, the overall impression of Golden City III is concerning. Both customers reported significant issues with the quality of the food, including overcooked and dry rice, fatty and seemingly not fresh chicken, and a weird-tasting egg in the fried rice. One reviewer also experienced a potential food-related illness. Furthermore, there is a report of declining standards and order inaccuracies from a returning customer, suggesting inconsistency in the restaurant's operations. The high star rating that attracted one of the dissatisfied customers appears to be inconsistent with recent experiences.
Based on this information, potential local users in Hampton, Virginia, should approach Golden City III with caution. The reported issues with food quality, freshness, and preparation are significant concerns. The stark contrast between the high rating and the actual experiences described in the reviews raises questions about the reliability of the rating or potential changes in the restaurant's standards over time. The negative feedback regarding the shrimp fried rice and chicken, both common and popular Chinese dishes, is particularly troubling. The report of a returning customer finding the food "all wrong and undone" further suggests a lack of consistency and attention to detail.
Given the overwhelmingly negative recent feedback regarding the food quality and consistency at Golden City III, it is difficult to recommend this establishment based solely on this information. There is no positive feedback in these recent reviews to counterbalance the serious concerns raised. Therefore, local users seeking a reliable and enjoyable Chinese dining experience in Hampton, VA, may want to consider other options with more consistently positive recent reviews. As there is no information provided about the restaurant's environment, services beyond takeout (if any), features, or any promotional offers, the primary focus must be on the reported quality of the food, which is currently a significant area of concern based on the available customer feedback.
Local users who still wish to consider Golden City III may want to inquire directly about their current food preparation standards and perhaps try a small order to assess the quality for themselves before committing to a larger purchase. Contacting them at (757) 728-3887 or +1 757-728-3887 might provide an opportunity to get a more current perspective from the restaurant itself. However, based on the strong negative experiences shared by recent customers, proceeding with considerable caution is advised.

… I stopped by here on my way to Williamsburg.. I’m not from the area.. but I really had my heart set on some Chinese food.. I was drawn to this spot because they have 4.4 stars.. and I have no clue why.. this was one of the worse Chinese food places I’ve ever had in my life. I ordered 2 large shrimp fried rice, 4 chicken wings, 1 small shrimp and broccoli, and 2 egg rolls for my 3 kids and I. We love shrimp fried rice.. and we started with that, and the chicken.. the rice was over cooked, mushy, and dry… the shrimp actually seemed fresh.. the added egg tasted weird, the chicken was fatty, and did not taste fresh AT ALL.. the egg rolls were ok.. and after all 4 of us collectively confirmed how disgusting the shrimp fried rice and chicken was, I had no desire to even try the shrimp and broccoli.. I ended up throwing the shrimp n broccoli away without even tasting it. Not long after my kids and I ate the shrimp friend rice and chicken, our stomachs started to hurt. You would think after buying all that food from this establishment, they would make sure I enjoyed it. Big mistake , $40 WASTED, Never again!
This place is garbage! I used to eat here all the time and now when I decide to eat there again my food is all wrong and undone!
The service here is quick and efficient, but the chicken and atmosphere is not great. Any chair you sit in to wait has cracked and split upholstery and the tables are covered with soda can carton. The chicken is rough and stringy, and I found a long black hair in my food. I'll be looking elsewhere for my Chinese takeout.
I used to get food from Golden City often when I lived off King Street and worked at Fort Monroe. They used to have the best Moo Goo Gai Pan -- one of my favorite dishes. This is the first time I went to Golden City since moving back to Hampton in 2019. I wanted some Moo Goo Gai Pai and thought I would go back to Golden CIty. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was not anything like what I expected. It was nothing like any other Moo Goo Gai Pan I have ever eaten and not in a good way. The diss was almost all mushrooms and only 2 baby corn, 4 pieces of cabbage and 3 slivers of carrots. The dish was almost all mushrooms and a small amount of thinly sliced chicken. The sauce was brown which I never saw in this dish before. All I could taste was the mushrooms and they had obviously been more than a few days old. I once left cooked mushrooms in the fridge for a week and then cooked with them. These mushrooms were worse than those week-old ones I ate. I bit into one of the baby corn and gagged. It had a very sour taste not sweet like baby corn normally is. I smelled the other baby corn and it smelled like a dirty sock. This was the worse Moo Goo Gai Pan I have ever had. In fact, it was the worse Chinese carry out meal I have ever had, I don't understand all the good reviews for this place. The food sure changed since I was last there and $24 dollars for Moo Goo Gai Pan and small Chow Mei Fun. Not even a good deal if the food had been okay. The Chow Mei Fun was good but does not merit giving this place more than 2 stars. Definitely not worth the price I paid.
I don't eat out often, but I'm glad I found this place and tried it. Looks like small & hardworking family restaurant. No inside dining (looks like there was pre-covid). Plastic drape/partition between customer & cashier. It's hot in there, so just step outside for a few you'll be alright. There's many options on menu. The food was great, the lady was right, she said we made a large order 😅 whoops! But we've got lunch next day. Definitely found my new Chinese spot.
