About Fortune Gourmet
Fortune Gourmet is a Chinese restaurant situated at 5706 Pickwick Rd in Centreville, Virginia. Operating within the Chinese Restaurant category, Fortune Gourmet provides takeout services with the convenience of online ordering. Customer reviews offer a glimpse into their service efficiency, pricing, and the quality of their food, presenting a somewhat mixed but informative picture for local users.
Details regarding the environment of Fortune Gourmet are not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews. As the focus of the feedback is primarily on the takeout experience, information about the dine-in atmosphere is absent. Therefore, local users should primarily consider Fortune Gourmet as a takeout option based on the available information.
In terms of services, Fortune Gourmet demonstrates efficiency in its online ordering system. One customer reported that their order was ready in a quick 15 minutes after being placed online, highlighting a strength in their order processing and preparation speed. This suggests that for customers looking for a fast takeout option, Fortune Gourmet may be a convenient choice. The restaurant also appears to have a system for potential promotions, as one reviewer mentioned receiving an extra Sweet & Sour Chicken dish, possibly as a bonus for spending a certain amount of money. This indicates a potential for value-added offers that customers might benefit from.
The pricing at Fortune Gourmet is noted as being "relatively cheap compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area," with dish prices ranging around $11-12. This affordability could be a significant draw for budget-conscious customers seeking Chinese takeout in Centreville. However, the reviews also highlight some inconsistencies and issues with the food quality that potential customers should be aware of.
One of the main concerns raised by a reviewer was the accuracy of the order. They reported that two out of the five dishes they ordered were incorrect, although they personally "didn’t mind too much since the protein was the same." This suggests a potential issue with order fulfillment accuracy that could be frustrating for other customers. Regarding the food itself, the Orange Chicken and General Tso Chicken were described as "not that fresh." Additionally, several dishes were reported to be "pretty oily" and left the customer's face feeling greasy, indicating a potential issue with the cooking methods or ingredient absorption of oil.
On a more positive note, another reviewer had a significantly different experience with specific dishes. They rated the Chicken Fried Rice and the Chicken Lo Mein as a "10/10" and praised their "delicious dark sauce Cantonese style." This customer highly recommended these two dishes and described the overall Chinese food as "delicious" and consistently "piping hot" with every delivery. This contrasting feedback suggests that the quality and taste might vary depending on the specific dishes ordered.
The only aspect of freshness mentioned was regarding the vegetables, which one reviewer noted as being the only food item that seemed fresh in their order. This could be an important point for customers who prioritize fresh vegetables in their Chinese takeout.
Based on the available reviews, the features of Fortune Gourmet include:
- Efficient online ordering system with quick preparation times.
- Relatively cheap pricing compared to other local Chinese restaurants.
- Potential for promotional items or bonuses with orders.
- Highly rated Chicken Fried Rice and Chicken Lo Mein with a delicious dark Cantonese-style sauce.
- Inaccuracies in order fulfillment (receiving the wrong dishes).
- Concerns about the freshness of certain dishes like Orange Chicken and General Tso Chicken.
- Some dishes being excessively oily.
- Inconsistent overall food quality based on differing customer experiences.
As one reviewer mentioned receiving an extra Sweet & Sour Chicken dish, it is possible that Fortune Gourmet occasionally offers promotions based on the order amount or specific items. However, no consistent or current promotional information is explicitly detailed in the provided reviews. Local users interested in potential deals or discounts should consider checking online ordering platforms or contacting Fortune Gourmet directly at (703) 802-1688 or +1 703-802-1688 to inquire about any ongoing offers.
In conclusion, Fortune Gourmet in Centreville, VA, presents itself as an affordable option for Chinese takeout with a convenient online ordering system and fast preparation times. While the pricing and efficiency are noted as positives, the feedback on food quality is mixed. The Chicken Fried Rice and Chicken Lo Mein receive high praise, but there are concerns about the freshness and oiliness of other dishes, as well as potential issues with order accuracy. Customers who prioritize budget and speed might find Fortune Gourmet appealing, particularly if they opt for the highly recommended noodle and rice dishes. However, awareness of the reported inconsistencies in food quality is advised. For information on current promotions, contacting the restaurant directly is recommended.

The Pros: Ordered online and food was ready in 15 minutes. They gave an extra Sweet & Sour Chicken dish which was nice, possibly a promo if I spent a certain amount of money. The price of the dishes were relatively cheap compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area ($11-12). The Cons: They messed up 2 of the 5 dishes and gave something else. I personally didn’t mind too much since the protein was the same. As for the food itself, the orange chicken and general tso chicken weren’t that fresh. The other dishes were pretty oily and left my face feeling greasy afterwards. Only food that seemed fresh was the vegetables.
The Chicken fried rice and the Chicken lo mein are a 10/10 with delicious dark sauce Cantonese style. I highly recommend!! Delicious Chinese food. Piping hot food with every delivery too!
Update: All these years later, and they still don't fail to meet our expectations for American-Chinese food. Delicious food, fresh ingredients, and generous portions. Our favourite go-to to-go American-Chinese restaurant since 2007 when we first moved to the area.
Here is my experience with this restaurant. It's a simple, mom and pop type of restaurant that offers carryout and is not really designed to be eaten in. Although technically you could (assuming after Covid). There are two tables there - however one that was occupied by the owner - so if he is using it all the time, perhaps there is only one usable table at a time. I think it was the owner who took my order and he was generally pretty friendly. After I brought the food home, I thought the portions were pretty good and decent. Although the white rice was missing, which I normally expect from a Chinese restaurant. Not sure if that was normal or they forgot. But anyway, here comes the real test, how was the food? How did it taste? I wanted to like this place but unfortunately, the food was not to my liking. The dishes were absolutely drenched with sauce, I mean, really soaked in a thick-ish type of bland Asian sauce. The sauce was so bland and "generic", like it came straight out of a factory (which it probably did), without any "zing". (To the owners: please do NOT add MSG for "zing"). Two of the dishes I ordered were also very generic. The only difference was that one dish had meat in it and the other did not. I think this is pretty sloppy cooking and extremely uncreative. Each dish should be unique and have a different taste. They not only tasted the same, pretty much, but they looked the same too. So, I could also imagine other dishes on their menu tasting pretty much the same too, except with a difference in meat. The sauce used in these two dishes is also very ho-hum, there was nothing exciting about it, and probably had a lot of salt and MSG, as I gained over 1.5 pounds the next day. You see, I like my sauce thickness to be almost like water, not too thick, and have a very strong soy sauce type of taste (with maybe some oil), cooked over high heat. I don't know what type of heat they used, but in my opinion, did not have the "high heat" taste. It's a special taste ... and if they did cook it over high heat, which I doubt, then I couldn't taste it. Next the General Tso's chicken was also drenched in too much sauce. In addition, some of the chicken was hard and the coating on the chicken was a bit skimpy. Now, I don't want super-breaded General Tso's chicken either, which I detest because then I would be eating more breading than chicken... but the chicken at this restaurant could use a bit more breading. I guess the taste of it was average but again way too much sauce (which probably contains way too much sugar). Lastly the chicken lo mein was the best out of all these. It tasted OK but it was nothing spectacular. The best thing was it wasn't drenched in sauce. I really wanted to like this restaurant, and it does have some good points, but on the food and the food taste, which is paramount for a restaurant, I have to give it pretty low marks. I hate saying that but that is my honest opinion. I hope the owners can take my comments as constructive criticisms and use them for the improvement on their food. If they implement my suggestions, perhaps they will get more business. I have added some pictures of the food. While you can clearly see the sauce on the food at the top, there is a lot more sauce sitting in the bowl that may be hard to see because the sauce is dark and the bowl is dark, but if you look closely, you'll see it some of it.
Food was very good, we got the pork and chicken fried rice and the egg drop and wonton soup. Soup was well seasoned. Overall solid Chinese food as you’d expect. The lady working there when I picked my food up was very nice and the little store was clean. Good vibes :)
