About Far East Cafe
Located at 631 Grant Ave in the heart of San Francisco's iconic Chinatown, Far East Cafe stands as a historic Chinese restaurant offering a unique dining experience that blends a rich cultural atmosphere with traditional service. As a long-standing establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, Far East Cafe not only provides a place to eat but also a journey back in time with its stunning interior and captivating history. For local users and visitors alike, this restaurant offers an opportunity to dine amidst a visually impressive setting while enjoying a meal in one of San Francisco's most culturally significant neighborhoods.
As a Chinese Restaurant, Far East Cafe likely serves a variety of classic Chinese dishes, although the specific culinary offerings are only partially detailed in the provided reviews. One reviewer described the food as "OK," suggesting a satisfactory but perhaps not exceptional culinary experience. However, the overall appeal of Far East Cafe seems to extend beyond just the food, with a strong emphasis on the ambiance and the service provided. This indicates that the restaurant aims to offer a holistic dining experience where the setting and the hospitality are as important as the cuisine itself.
The environment of Far East Cafe is consistently highlighted as a major draw. The reviewer described the "details and atmosphere" as "stunning," emphasizing the immersive cultural experience it provides. Specific elements such as "century old chandeliers and murals," along with "crown molding and vibrant colors," contribute to a visually rich and historically significant setting. This suggests that the restaurant's interior has been meticulously maintained over time, preserving its unique character and offering diners a glimpse into the past. The atmosphere is clearly a significant feature that sets Far East Cafe apart from more contemporary establishments, making it a destination for those who appreciate dining in a space with history and character.
The service at Far East Cafe receives positive feedback, with one reviewer describing it as "great." This suggests that the staff is attentive and efficient in ensuring a pleasant dining experience for their guests. Another aspect of the service that stands out is the "knowledgeable" host who took the time to inform and entertain guests about the history of the restaurant, even during a brief stop for drinks. This personal touch and willingness to share the restaurant's story enhance the overall experience, making it more than just a meal but also an engaging cultural interaction.
A notable feature of Far East Cafe, as mentioned by one reviewer, is the policy of automatically adding a tip to the bill for parties of four people. While the reviewer noted this as a "disappointment," they also mentioned that they would have likely left a similar or even larger amount. This policy is something for local users to be aware of when dining at Far East Cafe with a group of four or more. It's a practice that is not uncommon in the restaurant industry but is worth noting for those who prefer to have complete control over the tipping amount.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information provided in the reviews. Customer Reviews
I had family in town and they wanted to visit Chinatown and have lunch. So we came to this place and decided to try it out. Service was great, food was OK, what was a disappointment was the bill because they added the tip for 4 people. But it's ok because i would have left more than what was on the bill.
The details and atmosphere are stunning. From century old chandeliers and murals to crown molding and vibrant colors, this restaurant will have you immersed in culture. We stopped in for drinks. The host was so knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant and kept us informed and entertained.
The inside of the restaurant was beautiful. Soup was delicious, The food was prepared and cooked well. ...when they say 'sour' they mean it!
Very mixed feelings about this place. We came here quite late mid week and were begrudgingly shown to a table by the male host. The waitress who took our drinks order was quite short & blunt, as was the man that took our food order (which we had a considerable wait for). I do wonder if this is a language barrier but it wasn’t warm/friendly or welcoming in the slightest. As we were eating late we shared a fried rice and a sweet & sour chicken. The food was delicious! Huge portion sizes and really reasonably priced too (especially for San Francisco). The restaurant had a sort of weird vibe, hard to explain and they had 2 large, very sad looking fish tanks at the end by the kitchen. I wish I’d taken a photo but they really didn’t look clean. This put us off ordering any seafood, especially since the sign outside advertises this place as a seafood restaurant. I don’t think we’d return here to eat inside, however a takeaway meal would definitely be considered!
Spent : $38 Ordered: Veg. Chowmean & hot & sour soup. Quantity was more than enough for two people. Noodles weren't that good. Soup was top notch. Got a fortune cookies at the end.
