About Egg Roll Number 1
Egg Roll Number 1 is a Chinese restaurant located at 4540 S Emerson Ave in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a local establishment in the Chinese Restaurant category, it aims to provide a variety of Chinese dishes to the community. However, recent online customer reviews present a stark contrast in experiences, indicating potential inconsistencies in food quality and service.
One customer shared a profoundly negative experience that strongly impacted their perception of Egg Roll Number 1. They mentioned making a commute specifically for a warm meal on a cold day and ordered a substantial amount of food, including chicken pho with beef broth, spring rolls, Singapore noodles, shrimp fried rice, and sweet and sour chicken for themselves and a friend. Initially, the fragrant smell and the fact that the food was being freshly prepared upon arrival gave them a positive impression. The staff even highlighted the inclusion of free crab rangoons with their order. However, the customer's experience deteriorated significantly upon arriving home with their takeout.
Upon inspecting their order, this customer discovered that the spring rolls were "completely burnt and dried out." More alarmingly, they found a "corroded piece of greasy, dirty, black plastic" in their pho, which they had initially mistaken for a burnt green onion. The reviewer expressed immense relief at not having consumed the plastic, recognizing the potential for serious injury. They interpreted the "free" crab rangoons as a deceptive attempt to compensate for the poorly prepared spring rolls, criticizing the restaurant for not remaking the order with fresh items. Furthermore, they described the Singapore noodles as "bland at best" and the shrimp fried rice as "mushy with rancid tasting shrimp." This customer reported wasting approximately $50 on the order and condemned the restaurant's business practices as "horrible." Adding to their frustration, they found the restaurant closed and the phone lines busy when they tried to address the issues, leading them to declare "it’s a NEVER AGAIN for me."
In stark contrast to this severely negative account, another customer shared a highly positive experience at Egg Roll Number 1. This reviewer described the food as "REALLY GOOD" and offered at "AWESOME prices." They mentioned returning to the restaurant multiple times and consistently finding everything "really tasty." On a visit with their fiancé, they were able to order two large bowls of pho, a large plate of crab rangoons, two spring rolls, and a plate of sesame chicken with rice for approximately $45, resulting in ample leftovers. This positive review also highlighted the speed of service, noting that the food came out "very quick," and praised the staff as "very nice and responsive." They also appreciated that, despite arriving close to closing time after working late, the staff did not rush them or make them feel unwelcome.
These two reviews paint a dramatically different picture of Egg Roll Number 1. One suggests a restaurant with significant issues in food preparation, quality control, and potentially deceptive practices, coupled with poor post-service communication. The other portrays a restaurant with delicious food, excellent value, fast service, and friendly staff. This discrepancy makes it challenging to provide a definitive assessment of the typical experience at Egg Roll Number 1.
Information regarding the environment of the restaurant is limited in these reviews. Neither customer provided details about the ambiance, cleanliness, or décor of the establishment. Therefore, it is not possible to describe the physical setting of Egg Roll Number 1 based solely on this information.
Similarly, specific details about the services offered are not extensively covered. Both reviews mention takeout service, and the positive review alludes to dine-in service as well. The staff's friendliness and responsiveness are noted in the positive review, while the negative review implies a lack of helpfulness and accessibility after a poor experience. Features of the restaurant, such as any unique menu items beyond standard Chinese-American fare or any specific amenities, are not mentioned.
Promotional information is also absent from these reviews, with the exception of the "free" crab rangoons mentioned in the negative review, which the customer perceived as a poor attempt to compensate for other issues rather than a genuine promotion. There is no indication of any ongoing discounts, specials, or loyalty programs at Egg Roll Number 1.
In conclusion, the recent customer reviews for Egg Roll Number 1 at 4540 S Emerson Ave in Indianapolis present a highly polarized view of the restaurant. While one customer experienced severely substandard food, including a potential health hazard, and criticized the service and business practices, another customer lauded the tasty food, excellent value, fast service, and friendly staff. These conflicting accounts suggest a potential lack of consistency in the restaurant's operations. Local users considering Egg Roll Number 1 should be aware of these divergent experiences and may want to exercise caution or seek more recent and consistent feedback before making a decision.

Terrible experience not worth my commute. I was in the mood for a quick bite and something warm considering the freezing temperatures outside, so I ordered the chicken pho with beef broth , spring rolls, Singapore noodles, shrimp fried rice and sweet and sour chicken for myself and a friend. At first I thought the food would be good because it smelled fragrant enough and was still being made fresh upon arrival. Staff even emphasized how they included free crab Rangoons in the order at our convenience but I discovered the real reason why later. Fast forward to me bringing my pick up order home, I noticed that not only were the spring rolls completely burnt and dried out, but a corroded piece of greasy, dirty, black plastic was in my pho that I originally mistook for a burnt green onion when putting the ingredients into the broth. I am so thankful that I didn’t consume it because it would have cut up my throat or worse. The “free” crab rangoons were obviously put in the bag to make up for the burnt spring rolls - why not just make a new order instead of choosing to be lazy and pass this off onto customers. The Singapore noodles were bland at best and the shrimp fried rice was mushy with rancid tasting shrimp. I wasted about $50. Horrible business practice and to make matters worse they were closed by the time I came to realize all of this, and the phone lines have been busy all day, so I couldn’t even speak to anyone if I wanted. it’s a NEVER AGAIN for me.
Food is REALLY GOOD and for AWESOME prices. Have been back a couple times now and everything has been really tasty. Came here with my finance and we were able to get two big bowls of pho, big plate of crab rangoons, 2 spring rolls, and a plate of sesame chicken with rice all for only like $45. Needles to say we had lots of leftovers to take home. Food comes out very quick and staff is very nice and responsive. We came close ish to closing time as we both worked late. They didn’t rush us or push us out at all (we still tried to not stay too long as they were starting to clean up and we didn’t want To keep them too long).
Food is amazing as always. Love that they offer 2 or 3 spring rolls. Pho is on point. The odd thing is their peanut sauce for the spring rolls is a bit spicy and I like spicy.
Love coming here. Friendly environment and always great service. My favorite go-to for pho. 😋🍜
I have been coming here since the early 2000's. Lily and her husband have always been awesome. Now I only see Lily but she is still always smiling and super polite. Definitely a staple spot in the Beech Grove area. Tonight I got what I consider to be the best Chicken Fried Rice in the city hands down. I am also a huge fan of their Pho. The Hot-n-Sour soup is the best I have ever had, Unbelievable!!!! Everything i have ever had here has been fresh and delicious. You have to stop in.
