About Egg Roll Kitchen
Welcome to Egg Roll Kitchen, a Chinese restaurant located at 6650 Bancroft Avenue in Oakland, California. As a local Chinese eatery, Egg Roll Kitchen offers a range of dishes, with some customer reviews highlighting positive experiences while others raise significant concerns about the restaurant's current standards following a change in ownership.
Information regarding the environment of Egg Roll Kitchen is limited in the provided reviews. One customer, who traveled from out of town, did not comment on the ambiance, suggesting that the focus might be more on the food itself rather than the dine-in experience. Another review, detailing negative experiences, also does not describe the physical environment of the restaurant. Therefore, local users seeking information about the restaurant's decor or atmosphere will need to visit in person or look for additional reviews online.
In terms of services, Egg Roll Kitchen appears to primarily cater to takeout orders, although dine-in service is likely available as it is referred to as a restaurant. One positive aspect mentioned is the preparation of "some of the best Chinese Food" one customer had experienced in a long time, specifically praising the "shrimp fried rice." This suggests that the kitchen is capable of producing high-quality dishes. However, it is crucial to note a significant service limitation mentioned by one reviewer: "it is cash only." This lack of electronic payment options could be inconvenient for some customers. Additionally, the same reviewer noted that they "did not offer any wifi plugs to the customers," which might be relevant for those planning to dine in and needing to stay connected.
A key feature of Egg Roll Kitchen, at least historically, seems to have been the quality of its food, particularly under previous ownership. One reviewer who had a positive experience mentioned hearing about the place and making a trip to Oakland specifically to try it. Their praise for the "shrimp fried rice" as "excellent" indicates a potential strength in this particular dish. They also advised asking for extra shrimp, noting that the standard portion included "4 maybe 5, at max, large pieces of shrimp." This suggests a generally positive view of the food's taste and quality, albeit with a recommendation for a larger portion of the main protein.
However, a contrasting and deeply concerning feature highlighted in another review is a perceived decline in quality and hygiene standards following a change in ownership. This reviewer explicitly stated, "Apparently the quality has gone down since the ownership has changed. It used to be the older Asian gentleman that prepared the food. These new folks are not the same." This suggests a significant shift in the restaurant's operations and the quality of its output.
The most alarming aspect of this negative review involves serious hygiene allegations. The reviewer recounted purchasing bok choy that was "riddled with black small bugs!" expressing disbelief that the greens were not washed. They returned one order, which was remade, but the new order also contained "multiple black bugs." This led them to question the overall hygiene practices of the kitchen, stating, "So this has to make us wonder, what else are they not being hygienic with?" Such allegations are severe and should be a significant consideration for potential customers.
Furthermore, the same negative review mentioned that the "egg rolls were sour," leading the reviewer to feed them to their dog. This indicates a potential issue with the freshness or preparation of another key menu item, given the restaurant's name. The strong negative sentiment expressed, including the recommendation for the restaurant to "pack it up and leave the hood" due to serving "dirty food," underscores the severity of this customer's experience.
Given the starkly contrasting reviews, it is challenging to provide a definitive assessment of Egg Roll Kitchen's current state. The positive review suggests that they are still capable of producing enjoyable dishes like the shrimp fried rice, albeit with a potentially small portion of shrimp. However, the negative review raises serious concerns about food quality and hygiene, particularly regarding the bok choy and egg rolls. The mention of a change in ownership could be a crucial factor contributing to these differing experiences.
Regarding promotional information, neither of the provided reviews mentions any specific deals or specials offered by Egg Roll Kitchen. Local users interested in finding out if they have any current promotions would need to contact the restaurant directly at (510) 638-2108 or mobile at +1 510-638-2108. They could inquire about daily specials, combination meals, or any other discounts that might be available.
In conclusion, Egg Roll Kitchen in Oakland presents a mixed picture based on recent customer reviews. While one customer praised the shrimp fried rice as excellent, another detailed significant issues with food quality and hygiene, attributing these problems to a change in ownership. The restaurant operates on a cash-only basis and does not offer customer Wi-Fi plugs. Potential customers should be aware of these contrasting experiences and the serious allegations raised in the negative review before deciding to patronize Egg Roll Kitchen. It might be prudent to seek more recent reviews or consider contacting the restaurant directly to address the hygiene concerns and inquire about their current practices before placing an order or visiting.

I visited SF from Houston and heard about this place and decided to make the trip to Oakland. Let me tell you, this is some of the best Chinese Food I’ve had in a long time. The shrimp fried rice was excellent! If you are in the area, it is worth the try. Please know it is cash only and they did not offer any wifi plugs to the customers. Also, you may want to ask for extra shrimp as they only put 4 maybe 5, at max, large pieces of shrimp in the shrimp fried rice. Overall, the food is great and I highly recommend.
Apparently the quality has gone down since the ownership has changed. It used to be the older Asian gentleman that prepared the food. These new folks are not the same. Don't eat/but the bok choy from here, it's riddled with black small bugs! They must don't believe in Washing the greens 🤷🏽♀️. We took one order back, they said they would make it over. Once we got home, we noticed multiple black bugs in the new order. So this has to make us wonder, what else are they not being hygienic with? We won't be going back here. It is unethical to sell customer's dirty food. We also ordered egg rolls that were sour-- I let my dog have those. It's time for them to pack it up and leave the hood-- we don't eat dirty food. I drove from Hayward to get this mess! 🤮🤢
A historic establishment that has been in business for over 50 years. Family owned and has NEVER had a bad review from the health department. Very good
East Oakland hood staple for dry fried ribs, chow mein, sweet & sour, and everything Chinese food. It's an old school hole in the wall. Mom and Pops owned joint. Food is always good, affordable, and on point. They have Combo meals for a nice and fair price.
BRING CASH, Classic old school American Chinese food. This place been open for 47 years( I know because I asked the lady working behind the counter). It taste like it did when I was a small child. The dry fried ribs taste the same..I remember when me and my dad would go get haircuts at Jackie's cuts and Styles a few doors down and my dad would buy a Quart of dried fried ribs. We could sit in the van post hair cut eating dry fried ribs with hot mustard. IT TASTE THE SAME. No it's not pretty but the food Go Crazy. I didnt get to take a picture because I ate it too fast.
