About Dun Huang
Welcome to Dun Huang, a Chinese restaurant located in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, specifically at 1268 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10027, USA. As part of the Chinese Restaurant category, Dun Huang aims to bring the distinctive flavors of Dunhuang cuisine, a regional style from Northwestern China, to the local community. Based on the limited customer feedback available, the restaurant appears to have both strengths and weaknesses that potential diners should consider.
One reviewer highlights that the dishes specifically related to Dunhuang cuisine are "actually pretty good." This suggests that the restaurant has some expertise in preparing authentic dishes from this region, which is known for its hearty flavors and the use of ingredients like lamb. For local users interested in exploring the unique culinary traditions of Northwestern China, Dun Huang might offer a valuable opportunity to sample these less commonly found dishes.
In particular, the lamb dishes at Dun Huang are singled out for high praise. The reviewer states that the lamb is "genuinely delicious" and recommends it to anyone who enjoys lamb. This strong endorsement indicates that lamb is a specialty of the restaurant and a must-try for patrons who appreciate this meat. The emphasis on the authenticity of the lamb preparation further suggests a commitment to delivering genuine flavors from the Dunhuang region.
However, the same reviewer offers a caveat, noting that other dishes on the menu "might not be as authentic" as the Dunhuang-specific items. This implies that while the restaurant excels in its regional specialties, other, perhaps more general Chinese dishes, might not meet the same standards of authenticity or quality. Potential customers might want to focus on ordering dishes that are explicitly identified as Dunhuang cuisine, particularly the lamb, to ensure a more satisfying and genuine culinary experience.
In contrast to the positive feedback on the lamb and Dunhuang dishes, another reviewer reported a significantly negative experience. They described their soup and beef dishes as "bland" and lacking any flavor. This starkly contrasting opinion suggests a potential inconsistency in the quality or preparation of different menu items. The reviewer also mentioned that the photos of the food were "deceiving," implying that the actual dishes did not live up to the visual appeal presented.
The most concerning part of this negative review involves the preparation of the shrimp. The reviewer stated that they ordered shrimp after being dissatisfied with their soup and discovered that the shrimp had not been properly cleaned, with "poop/intestines" present in every single one. This is a serious issue related to food safety and hygiene and is described as a "disgusting to experience." This feedback raises significant concerns about the restaurant's food handling and preparation practices, particularly for seafood.
Given the limited number of reviews and the starkly contrasting experiences, it is challenging to form a comprehensive picture of the environment and services at Dun Huang. The positive comment about the Dunhuang dishes and lamb suggests that there might be skilled chefs in the kitchen who are knowledgeable about this regional cuisine. However, the negative review points to potential issues with quality control, food preparation, and hygiene standards, at least during the time of that reviewer's visit.
The fact that one reviewer found the photos of the food to be deceiving could imply something about the presentation or the actual appearance of the dishes served. It might suggest that the restaurant aims for a certain visual appeal in its marketing that is not consistently reflected in the food delivered to customers.
Features of Dun Huang appear to center around its specialization in the cuisine of the Dunhuang region of Northwestern China, with a particular emphasis on lamb dishes. The authenticity of these regional specialties is highlighted as a positive aspect. However, the potential inconsistency in the quality of other menu items and the serious concerns raised about food hygiene in the preparation of shrimp are significant factors that potential customers should be aware of.
Currently, there is no information available regarding any promotional offers or specials at Dun Huang in the provided reviews. Local users interested in trying this restaurant might want to contact them directly at (646) 476-4549 or mobile phone +1 646-476-4549 to inquire about any current promotions or to get more information about their Dunhuang cuisine specialties and their food preparation practices.
In conclusion, Dun Huang on Amsterdam Ave in Upper Manhattan offers a unique opportunity to explore the flavors of Dunhuang cuisine, with its lamb dishes receiving specific praise for their authenticity and taste. However, potential diners should be aware of the mixed reviews, particularly the concerning report regarding the cleanliness of the shrimp and the blandness of other dishes. If you are specifically interested in trying authentic Northwestern Chinese cuisine and have a penchant for lamb, Dun Huang might be worth a visit, but it would be prudent to consider the reported inconsistencies and hygiene concerns when making your decision.

Customer Reviews
I think the dishes related to Dunhuang cuisine are actually pretty good. The other dishes, though, might not be as authentic. But the lamb is genuinely delicious — anyone who likes lamb would definitely enjoy it
Soup was bland. Beef was bland. Taste was lacking any flavor at all. Photo was deceiving. Upon disliking my soup I ordered the shrimp of which I ate and saw that they do not clean the shrimp. Every single shrimp had poop/intestines and was a disgusting to experience. Please do better.
The food was OK. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was pretty good. I ordered Fried Rice with shrimp, fish with cabbage soup, pork ribs, and the fermented egg for our dessert. I liked the fried rice the best out of all I ordered. Fermented egg can be more fermented.
I find the food here just fabulous and the prices very fair. There is currently a prawn special and it's so fresh as if it just came from the market. Great presentation and attention to details like serving at an optimal food temperature (i.e., hot dishes not scalding, cold ones not like right out of a fridge, but just right). Staffers aren't there to be your friends but instead are very efficient. Well done!
Came to this restaurant with a friend who is from Northwestern China so you know from the get-go this place has to be pretty amazing! Really enjoyed eating signature beef noodle where you can choose 5 diff noodle options (fun!) and it's 9 bucks. Quality and portions were great. Also beef Tenderloin soup is a must! So tangy and flavorful but its 18 bucks and not that big so you should share it with others as an appetizer. Will def come back again.
