About Dumpling Kitchen

Located at 2517 Durant Avenue, Suite A, in Berkeley, California, Dumpling Kitchen is a Chinese restaurant that offers a diverse menu extending beyond just dumplings. While its name might suggest a focus primarily on pan-fried dumplings, Dumpling Kitchen is noted by patrons for its excellent selection of dim sum-style dishes, particularly soup dumplings. As a valued establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category in Berkeley, it provides a wide array of options, a pleasant ambiance, and attentive service to its local clientele.

One of the initial points of feedback from a reviewer is that the name "Dumpling Kitchen" can be somewhat misleading, as the restaurant's strengths lie more in the realm of dim sum and soup dumplings rather than traditional pan-fried dumplings. This suggests that while dumplings are a significant part of their offering, the variety and style lean towards the delicate and flavorful soup-filled dumplings and other small, shareable dim sum items.

The overall consensus on the food quality is positive, with one reviewer stating that "Their food is good." However, it is also mentioned that the prices are "slightly pricey," indicating that while the taste and quality are commendable, the cost might be a bit higher compared to other similar establishments in the area. Despite this, certain dishes stand out as favorites. Notably, the jiuniang is highly praised as a favorite dish or dessert, described as having "high protein and high portions." This suggests that the jiuniang at Dumpling Kitchen is not only delicious but also substantial and nutritious, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a unique and fulfilling option.

The soup dumplings at Dumpling Kitchen also receive positive remarks, with one reviewer stating they were "rather good." This reinforces the idea that soup dumplings are a specialty of the restaurant and a must-try for visitors. The delicate skin, flavorful broth, and savory filling characteristic of good soup dumplings seem to be well-executed here.

On the other hand, one area where Dumpling Kitchen received less favorable feedback is their stir-fry dishes, which were described as being "a little too salty." This is an important point for potential customers to note, especially if they are sensitive to sodium levels in their food or prefer less salty preparations.

Despite this minor criticism, the overall dining experience at Dumpling Kitchen seems positive. One reviewer noted that "Their menu is quite comprehensive with plenty of options," indicating a wide variety of dishes to choose from, catering to different tastes and preferences within Chinese cuisine. This extensive menu, combined with the focus on dim sum and soup dumplings, suggests that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The service at Dumpling Kitchen is also commended, with the staff being described as "responsive." This implies that the servers are attentive to the needs of their customers, contributing to a pleasant and efficient dining experience. Prompt and helpful service can significantly enhance the overall satisfaction of a meal.

The ambiance of Dumpling Kitchen is described as "quite nice with a homey feel." This suggests a comfortable and welcoming environment where diners can relax and enjoy their meal. A homey atmosphere often implies a sense of warmth and familiarity, making the restaurant a potentially appealing spot for both casual dining and small gatherings.

One reviewer recounted their experience of stumbling upon Dumpling Kitchen while in the area, suggesting it might be a pleasant surprise for those exploring the local culinary scene in Berkeley. This spontaneous visit led to an order that included several dishes, providing insights into some of the popular items on the menu.

The dishes ordered by this reviewer included kurobuta pork soup dumplings (8 pcs for $11.95), beef roll pancakes ($7.95), dry braised string beans ($13.80), and steamed shrimp and pork shumai ($11.95). Among these, the reviewer indicated that they "Could definitely go without the shumai," suggesting that this particular dish was not as impressive as the others. However, they found that "Everything else was decent," indicating a satisfactory experience with the kurobuta pork soup dumplings, beef roll pancakes, and dry braised string beans.

For those planning to visit during peak hours, one piece of practical advice offered is to "Put your name down if there is a line," indicating that Dumpling Kitchen can get busy, which is often a sign of its popularity. However, another reviewer mentioned that it was "a bit unorganized to get a seat and ordering took some time," suggesting that there might be occasional issues with the efficiency of the seating and ordering process, particularly when the restaurant is crowded.

In summary, Dumpling Kitchen in Berkeley offers a diverse menu with a focus on delicious soup dumplings and other dim sum-style dishes. While the name might be slightly misleading, the quality of the food, particularly the soup dumplings and the unique jiuniang, along with the responsive staff and homey ambiance, make it a noteworthy Chinese restaurant in the area. Potential customers should be aware that the prices are perceived as slightly high and that the stir-fry dishes might be on the saltier side. The experience with seating and ordering might occasionally be a bit disorganized during busy times. Nevertheless, with its comprehensive menu and generally positive feedback on key dishes, Dumpling Kitchen is worth a visit for those seeking flavorful dim sum and a comfortable dining atmosphere in Berkeley.

The name is misleading as they serve more dim sum style/soup dumplings rather than pan-fried dumplings. Their food is good, but slightly pricey. My favorite dish/dessert is their jiuniang, which has high protein and high portions. Their soup dumplings were also rather good. The only downside is their stir-fry dishes which were a little too salty. Their menu is quite comprehensive with plenty of options, the staff are responsive, and the ambiance inside is quite nice with a homey feel.

Came here for a dumpling fix and had a bit of a mixed experience. Some dishes were really solid—especially the soup dumplings—but others were a little too salty or just didn’t quite hit the mark. The flavors overall were decent, but not super consistent. One thing to note: they only accept cash or debit when dining in, which feels outdated—especially since they do take cards if you order online or through an app. Just a bit inconvenient if you’re trying to eat there spontaneously. The place itself is cozy, service is quick, and it’s worth trying if you’re in the area—but I’d probably stick to takeout and be a little choosy with what I order next time.

Order delivery. Their soup dumplings are very good totally comparable to DTF but much cheaper and closer. The other dumplings were good. The fried noodles and rice cake are delicious. Will definitely go back for more soup dumplings

I love this place very much, and tend to come here when I’m on campus and searching for Chinese in that area for a simple lunch. The people who provide service are passionate and friendly youngsters, and they can serve you in both English and Chinese languages. They don’t have a very big menu, but they are really good at what they are specialized. Dumplings and Baozi are super delicious, all other small snacks are amazing too. Their main dishes are wonderful too. It’s very interesting that they are specialized in Shanghai food, but at the same time they also offer selected signature dishes from other places in China. One thing though, they still can’t serve alcoholic beverages. The location on Google map is a bit confusing, the restaurant is right on the side of the street, really easy to find!
