About Dumpling Home

Welcome to Dumpling Home, a Chinese restaurant located at 298 Gough Street in San Francisco, quickly establishing itself as a premier destination for dumpling enthusiasts and lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine. Situated in the vibrant Hayes Valley neighborhood, Dumpling Home offers a diverse menu centered around meticulously crafted dumplings and flavorful noodle dishes, earning high praise from local diners who appreciate quality, taste, and efficient service.

As a dedicated Chinese restaurant, Dumpling Home distinguishes itself in a city known for its numerous dumpling spots. According to enthusiastic customer reviews, Dumpling Home truly stands out for the exceptional quality of its offerings. One recurring highlight is their wide variety of dumplings, prepared with evident skill and attention to detail. Among the must-try items are the pan-fried dumplings, available in both pork and beef variations. One first-time taster described the pork pan-fried dumplings as a new favorite, noting the unique experience of the juicy filling squirting out upon the first bite – a testament to their succulence. While both pork and beef options are well-received, the pork version was particularly favored by one reviewer.

Another star of the menu is the Pork Xiao Long Bao (XLB), those delicate Shanghainese soup dumplings. Customers rave about the thin yet resilient skins that perfectly encase the rich and flavorful broth and meat filling. Each bite is described as incredibly juicy and packed with taste. While one reviewer noted that the XLB at Dumpling Home tended to be on the larger side, preferring a more equal meat-to-pastry ratio, the overall flavor profile was undeniably impressive.

Beyond their exceptional dumplings, Dumpling Home also excels in other classic Chinese dishes. The Dan Dan Noodles have been singled out as a standout, with one reviewer proclaiming them "easily one of the best I’ve ever had!" The sauce is lauded for its creamy, nutty, and deeply flavorful character, coating the perfectly chewy noodles beautifully, creating a harmonious and satisfying dish.

The Juicy Pork Pan-Fried Baos are another popular choice. These buns achieve a delightful textural contrast, being crispy and golden on the bottom while remaining soft and fluffy on top. The interior is filled with savory and juicy pork, making each bite a textural and flavorful delight.

For those looking to explore beyond dumplings and noodles, the Seasoned Beef Pockets offer a different yet equally satisfying experience. The bread is described as having a perfectly crisp exterior with a pleasant chewiness, while the beef filling is well-seasoned with a subtle sweetness that brings all the elements together harmoniously.

In terms of service, Dumpling Home is noted for its efficiency. One reviewer mentioned that while there might be a wait for a table, especially on a Thursday night after 6:30 PM (with the policy of seating only when the full party has arrived), the service was "really quick" once seated. This suggests that the restaurant manages to handle a busy dining room effectively, ensuring that customers receive their orders promptly.

The dining environment at Dumpling Home appears to be conducive to a satisfying meal. While specific details about the decor are not extensively described, the fact that customers are willing to wait for a table indicates a pleasant and popular atmosphere. The restaurant seems to cater to a diverse clientele, drawn by the quality of the food.

Regarding pricing and value, one group of three diners paid approximately $120 including tips for six dishes, tea, and one beer. This was considered a "good portion for 3 people," suggesting that Dumpling Home offers generous servings that justify the price point. The positive feedback regarding the overall dining experience and the willingness of customers to return further underscores the value proposition of Dumpling Home.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available from the provided reviews. Went on a thursday night. Expect a wait if you come after 6:30 pm, they don't seat you until you have the full party. That said, service was really quick once we sat down. We ordered the pork and beef pan-fried dumplings, pork xiao long bao, sauteed grean beans, cucumber, and the Zha Jiang noodles. Everything was really good. My favorite was the pan-fried dumplings, as I've never had that before. Just be careful as it does squirt everywhere if you bite into it. I liked the pork better than the beef dumpling. The cucumber was fresh, although I didn't really taste the garlic sauce. The xiao long bao was great, and the meat and sauce were very flavorful. Although personally, I thought they were on the bigger side. I prefer XLB that has an equal meat to pastry ratio. The green beans were perfectly crunchy. For 6 dishes, tea and 1 beer, we paid ~$120 including tips. This is a good portion for 3 people. Would definitely come back again.

San Francisco has no shortage of dumpling spots, but Dumpling Home truly stands out! Everything I tried was fantastic. Pork Xiao Long Bao – The skins were delicate yet held the rich, flavorful broth perfectly. Each bite was juicy and packed with flavor. Dan Dan Noodles – Easily one of the best I’ve ever had! The sauce was incredibly creamy, nutty, and deeply flavorful, coating the perfectly chewy noodles beautifully. Juicy Pork Pan-Fried Baos – These were delicious — crispy and golden on the bottom while staying soft and fluffy on top, bursting with savory, juicy pork inside. Seasoned Beef Pockets – The bread had the perfect crisp exterior with a slightly chewy bite, while the beef was well-seasoned with a subtle sweetness that tied everything together. With so many dumpling spots in SF, it can be hard to choose, but Dumpling Home is absolutely worth it. I’ll definitely be back!

Really great dumplings. I like the juicy pork buns. They had such an umami flavor and were crispy on the bottom. Everything was delicious. The wood ear mushroom app was seasoned and cooked perfectly, the mushrooms were so fresh and crunchy. The wine and beer for $14 is a little pricey for the quality. Got 3 servings of dumplings and an app for 2 people and it was plenty, even too much food. The boiled mushroom and chicken dumplings were simple yet juicy and delicious. The XLB were good as well, the soup was flavorful and the wrapper not too thick. We came 5:30 on a Thursday and only waited 5 minutes to be seated. They have outdoor seating too but it was too cold. It’s a small place and very casual, decor/ atmosphere is nothing much. And the single bathroom in the back is not very clean and you have to walk past the serving station to get to it. I hear this is a really popular place and was on the Michelin guide. Def very good dumplings and affordable.

A little bit of a wait because it’s so popular but so so good and so worth it! Tea was a little expensive, but dumplings were larger than expected so it evens out. Definitely get the juicy pork pan fried dumplings.

Excellent dumplings, but less-than excellent beef noodles. If you come after 5:30 pm, expect a long wait if you want to sit indoors. The cabbage and pork dumplings were very aromatic and juicy. They almost explode in your mouth like a soup dumpling! However the beef noodles had a relatively bland broth, completely bland radishes, and somewhat soggy noddles. The beef itself was very flavorful in comparison, although it had a rather strong star anise flavor.
