About Duck House Restaurant 鹿鼎記
Duck House Restaurant, also known as 鹿鼎記, is a Chinese restaurant located at 501 S Atlantic Blvd in Monterey Park, California. Situated within a region known for its vibrant Chinese culinary scene, Duck House Restaurant aims to provide a memorable dining experience with a focus on traditional Chinese cuisine. Based on the available customer reviews, the restaurant is known for several signature dishes and a traditional ambiance, although some aspects of the service and environment have received mixed feedback.
The restaurant's environment is described by one reviewer as having a "traditional look," which suggests an authentic Chinese aesthetic in its decor and layout. The same reviewer also noted that there is "ample seating," indicating that the restaurant can accommodate a significant number of diners. However, another reviewer who visited on a Saturday night found the restaurant to be "packed and noisy," leading to a somewhat chaotic atmosphere, particularly in the entrance area where they were initially "crammed in." This suggests that while the restaurant may have ample seating overall, it can get very busy during peak hours, potentially impacting the comfort and noise level for diners. The presence of "crying babies and clattering plates" further contributed to a loud environment, making it difficult for patrons to hear each other. This indicates that the ambiance might not be ideal for those seeking a quiet or intimate dining experience, especially during busy times.
In terms of service, experiences seem to vary. One reviewer who visited on a Saturday night described the service as "inadequate," despite the presence of a service button at their table. They reported that their servers seemed forgetful, taking a significant amount of time (20 minutes) to bring ice water after being asked. This suggests potential issues with attentiveness or efficiency, particularly when the restaurant is busy. However, another reviewer who focused more on the food mentioned that the service was "faster than expected," especially considering the high quality of the food. This discrepancy in service experiences could be due to the time of visit, the specific servers encountered, or varying expectations of different diners.
A significant feature of Duck House Restaurant, as highlighted in the reviews, is the quality and flavor of its food. The duck is consistently praised as "excellent" and "very good and crispy." One reviewer specifically mentioned ordering the Traditional Roasted Duck 24 hours in advance, which suggests it might be a specialty that requires pre-ordering. The presentation of the roasted duck, served with pancake, scallion, and cucumber, is also noted positively. A particularly ingenious touch was the serving plate being placed on top of a bowl of hot water to keep the food warm, indicating attention to detail in ensuring a pleasant dining experience. The "deep rich flavors" of the roasted duck were also lauded.
Beyond the duck, other dishes have also received high praise. The "steak and onions" were described as "juicy and flavorful," and the "Filet Mignon cubes in black pepper sauce" were noted as "perfectly cooked and seasoned," being tender with every bite. The "truffle lobster," "string beans," and "jellyfish salad" were also mentioned as tasty by one reviewer, showcasing a diverse menu with well-prepared options. Another reviewer enjoyed the "Sauteed string bean with ground pork and dry shrimp" as a nice addition that helped round out the flavors of their meal. The "Dragon Ball," described as lightly fried fish balls with shrimp roe filling, was a "surprisingly delicious treat" that added to the dining experience. Lastly, the "Crispy scallion pancake" was recommended as a "must-have" that enhanced the enjoyment of the meal.
However, one reviewer noted an issue with the timing of the dishes, with the fried rice arriving last and disrupting the flow of the meal. This suggests potential inconsistencies in kitchen coordination or order management. Furthermore, this reviewer, while acknowledging the good food, felt that the overall experience was not worth the high prices, especially when compared to other options. This indicates that while the food quality may be a highlight, the combination of a noisy environment and potentially slow or disorganized service at a higher price point might not appeal to all diners.
Another practical consideration for visitors is parking. One reviewer mentioned that the parking lot has "scarce availability," suggesting that it can be difficult to find a spot on-site. As a result, patrons may need to rely on street parking in the Monterey Park area. This is a useful piece of information for those planning to drive to the restaurant, especially during busy hours.
In conclusion, Duck House Restaurant 鹿鼎記 in Monterey Park appears to be a Chinese restaurant known for its delicious and well-prepared traditional Chinese cuisine, particularly its roasted duck and other flavorful dishes like filet mignon in black pepper sauce and various seafood and vegetable options. The restaurant has a traditional ambiance with ample seating. However, customers should be aware that it can get very crowded and noisy, especially on weekend nights. Service experiences seem to vary, with some finding it slow or forgetful, while others report it as faster than expected. Parking availability on-site is limited, potentially requiring street parking. While the food quality is generally praised, the overall experience, considering the potentially high prices and the drawbacks in environment and service, might not be perceived as worth it by all diners. Local users seeking authentic and flavorful Chinese cuisine, particularly the roasted duck, might find Duck House Restaurant值得一試 (worth a try), but should be prepared for potential crowds, noise, and parking challenges.

We had a reservation for 4 on a Saturday night, but still had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was packed and noisy, and we were crammed in the entrance. Surrounded by crying babies and clattering plates. It was difficult to hear each other. The service was inadequate, despite having a service button at our table. Our servers seemed forgetful, taking 20 minutes to bring us ice water after we asked. However, the food was a highlight - the duck was excellent, and we enjoyed both the traditional and cumin-seasoned fried bones. The steak and onions were juicy and flavorful, and the truffle lobster, string beans, and jellyfish salad were also tasty. However, the timing of the dishes were off, with the fried rice arriving last and disrupting the flow of the meal. Considering the high prices, I didn't feel that the experience was worth it, especially compared to other options.
Located out in Monterey Park, is a fabulous Chinese cuisine, it has a traditional look for a restaurant, with ample seating. The parking lot is scarce with availability, so you’ll have to park on the street. We ordered the Traditional Roasted Duck (24 hours in advance), with pancake, scallion and cucumber. Very good and crispy. They placed the serving plate on top of a bowl of hot water to keep the food warm, that was genius. Loved the deep rich flavors that were combined to make this scrumptious meal. We also ordered the Filet Mignon cubes in black pepper sauce. The beef cubes were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Tender with every bite, loved every bite. The Sauteed string bean with ground pork and dry shrimp was a nice addition as it help round out the flavors. The Dragon Ball that is lightly fried fish balls with shrimp roe’s filling was a surprisingly delicious treat that added to our experience. The Crispy scallion pancake was a must have as it gave the full experience needed to enjoy this hefty meal. The service was faster than expected, as this place is on the higher end of quality food, which is a good thing. I would definitely come back, just because the flavors are so good.
Very disappointing experience. I ordered the crispy duck wings, but it was mostly just skin. The restaurant has a cute design, but the service was terrible. Our server never checked on us, one dish arrived almost after we finished eating, and when I asked, she admitted to forgetting it—no apology or compensation. They also forced a 15% tip for lunch, despite poor service. We ordered a bottle of red wine, which was marked up from $8.99 to $38+, and were rushed to finish it before 3 pm. The kitchen staff even ate their own meals next to us at 2:30 pm. To top it off, the staff seemed to favor non-Chinese customers, which felt discriminatory. I’m from Taiwan, and this was a very uncomfortable experience.
Always a good place to go for occasions, the duck is great, and steam fish is cooked just right, very soft and not overcooked. All their dishes are not overly salty and oily. They have a few big round tables so they can accommodate large parties. Plenty of parking in front.
Ad dinner here tonight. the duck was amazing. We had several items as well and a high recommendation of the braised beef.
