About Dragon River Restaurant

Dragon River Restaurant is a well-regarded Chinese restaurant located at 5045 Geary Blvd in San Francisco, California, within the vibrant Richmond District. As a part of the Chinese Restaurant category, Dragon River aims to provide a rich and authentic dining experience for local users seeking traditional and flavorful Chinese cuisine. Based on recent customer reviews, the restaurant appears to be a popular choice for family dinners and celebrations, offering a variety of dishes that have been praised for their taste and quality.

One particularly notable dish, mentioned in a February 2024 review, is the chicken stuffed with sticky rice. This appears to be a specialty that requires pre-ordering and is described as "quite enjoyable" due to the delicious ingredients mixed within the sticky rice and the well-executed fried chicken exterior. This suggests that Dragon River Restaurant offers unique and perhaps less commonly found dishes that can be a delightful surprise for those looking beyond standard Chinese fare.

Another highlight frequently mentioned is the Peking Duck, which was described as "excellent" with "very crispy" skin. Peking Duck is a classic and often signature dish in many authentic Chinese restaurants, and the positive feedback indicates that Dragon River prepares it to a high standard, focusing on the crucial element of crispy skin that is highly valued in this dish. This could be a significant draw for those craving expertly prepared Peking Duck in the San Francisco area.

The Fish Fillet with Asparagus also received positive remarks, being called a "Big hit" and described as "simple and cooked perfectly." This suggests that Dragon River Restaurant also excels in preparing lighter and more straightforward dishes, focusing on the quality of the ingredients and proper cooking techniques to deliver satisfying flavors. The combination of fish and asparagus indicates a balanced approach to their menu, offering both richer and lighter options.

The White Chicken with Ginger Sauce was mentioned as "another good dish," indicating that their poultry offerings extend beyond the stuffed chicken and are also well-received. Ginger sauce is a common and flavorful accompaniment to chicken in Chinese cuisine, and this positive feedback suggests that Dragon River's version is tasty and well-prepared.

A dish that evokes nostalgia and caters to those seeking traditional flavors is the pork belly taro clay pot. The reviewer mentioned it as an "old time favorite and hard to find nowadays," and noted that "everyone enjoyed that too." Clay pot dishes are a significant part of Cantonese cuisine, known for their comforting warmth and rich flavors developed through slow cooking. The positive reception of this dish suggests that Dragon River Restaurant stays true to authentic recipes and offers dishes that might be missed by those familiar with traditional Chinese cooking.

Overall, the February 2024 review paints a picture of a restaurant that provides a "very good experience," particularly for family dinners and celebrations like Chinese New Year. The variety of praised dishes, from the unique chicken stuffed with sticky rice to the classic Peking Duck and comforting clay pot, suggests a diverse menu with something to please different palates.

Another customer shared their positive experience with several other dishes, including Mu Shu Vegetables, Pickles with Fish Fillet, and Lotus with Fried Shrimp, simply stating, "So good!" This further reinforces the impression of Dragon River Restaurant as a place that consistently delivers tasty and well-prepared food across a range of different culinary styles within Chinese cuisine. The mention of Mu Shu Vegetables, a popular and versatile dish, along with the more unique Pickles with Fish Fillet and the flavorful Lotus with Fried Shrimp, indicates a breadth in their offerings and a commitment to quality.

Based on these reviews, Dragon River Restaurant appears to offer a welcoming environment for families and individuals alike, providing a satisfying dining experience centered around authentic and flavorful Chinese cuisine. The positive feedback on a variety of dishes suggests a consistent level of quality in their cooking. However, the reviews do not provide specific details about the restaurant's ambiance or decor. February 2024: Enjoyed a family dinner on a Thursday night. We pre-ordered the chicken stuffed with sticky rice. This dish is quite enjoyable because it's fried chicken stuffed with sticky rice that has a lot of delicious ingredients mixed in. This place did a good job. Peking Duck was excellent. The skin was very crispy 😋. Fish fillet with asparagus was a Big hit too. Simple and cooked perfectly. The white chicken with ginger sauce was another good dish. Everything was tasty 😋. We ordered the pork belly taro clay pot dish that is an old time favorite and hard to find nowadays. Everyone enjoyed that too. Overall, had a nice family dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Good selection of traditional Chinese dishes. My parents enjoyed eating here and it seemed like a great neighborhood restaurant with families and neighbors have some great conversations!

Unfortunately our experience was not good for dinner. We have been coming here for a long time and were so looking forward to it. But they have serious issues. The service was erratic. The restaurant wasn't busy but it took way too long for someone to take our order. There was a young male server who obviously did not want to be there and walked around like a zombie. There was an older lady who was very nice, but she was absent most of our meal. Our dishes came out in a random order and they even forgot several dishes. This made for a terrible experience. Then the food was not good. The quality and portion size was subpar for the prices. Honestly, the portions were visibly smaller! . The entrées was had were bland. The vegetables were undercooked. I was so disappointed. This place used to be known for its Hakkian cuisine, the few in the Richmond. But now, it's fallen off and I can't recommend it anymore. This is one of the more painful reviews I've had to give. Hopefully they improve. But until then, we will take our business elsewhere.

What a fun place!. I think the owner's wife is Mindy, running the dining room. She is adorable and provides GREAT service. We brought a fish purchased live from a Chinese fish market and they steamed it for us for just $10. It was amazinglydelicious. The rest of the food was also really delicious AND very affordable. This is not a fancy place but it's a not-fuss place.
