About Dragon Palace
Welcome to your local guide to Dragon Palace, a restaurant located at 577 Tiogue Ave in Coventry, Rhode Island. While primarily operating as a Chinese Restaurant, Dragon Palace also features Japanese cuisine, including sushi, offering a diverse menu to cater to various tastes. Based on recent customer reviews, Dragon Palace presents a mixed dining experience, with some patrons highly praising their traditional Chinese dishes, while others have expressed significant disappointment with both the food quality and service.
One enthusiastic reviewer described Dragon Palace as a "great big restaurant hidden in an office building," suggesting a spacious interior that might be somewhat unexpected given its location. They also mentioned complimentary wonton strips served upon being seated, accompanied by a distinctive "darkest duck sauce" which they found delicious. This indicates a welcoming gesture and a unique touch to their service. The reviewer was particularly impressed with the hot and sour soup, highlighting its perfect balance of sourness, heat, and sesame oil, deeming it "seriously one of the best!" They also praised the "old school egg rolls" made with celery and pork, contrasting them favorably with newer versions made with cabbage. Furthermore, the shrimp with lobster sauce was described as "spot on," featuring fresh shrimp in a flavorful, not overly salty sauce. Even the "darkest" fried rice was commended for not being salty. Overall, this review paints a picture of a restaurant that excels in traditional New England-style Chinese cuisine.
In stark contrast, another customer's experience was overwhelmingly negative. They decided to try Dragon Palace based on positive reviews but had a significantly different outcome. Their husband ordered sushi and found it to be just "okay," noting that the yellowtail and salmon rolls contained fish that was "less than vibrant" and masked with spicy mayo. This suggests potential inconsistencies in the quality of their Japanese offerings.
The reviewer's own meal of teriyaki chicken and fried rice, which included a salad, was also disappointing. The salad dressing was described as a "sad, shelf-stable version" of ginger dressing. The fried rice, despite its extremely dark color leading to an expectation of being over-seasoned and salty, surprisingly tasted like "nothing," lacking garlic and soy sauce flavors. The teriyaki chicken, despite being served on a sizzling hot skillet, was found to be "extremely tough" and inedible, although the teriyaki sauce itself had an acceptable flavor. This customer felt compelled to speak up about the poor quality of the food to the waitress.
The subsequent interaction with the management also left a negative impression. The waitress reportedly sent over the manager, but there seemed to be a lack of communication, as he simply asked if they needed anything else and presented the check without addressing the food quality issues. The customers were not even aware he was the manager until the waitress informed them later. When the waitress returned, she apologized and explained that she couldn't take anything off the bill because the manager would be upset. This suggests potential issues with customer service and management's handling of complaints. The reviewer concluded that the experience was "uncomfortable and weird" and that the food was "really expensive for the low quality," ultimately recommending "literally anywhere else."
Considering these contrasting reviews, the environment of Dragon Palace is described by one as a "great big restaurant hidden in an office building," implying a potentially spacious but perhaps not immediately obvious location. No further details about the ambiance, décor, or cleanliness are provided in the available feedback.
In terms of services, Dragon Palace offers both Chinese and Japanese cuisine, including sushi. They provide dine-in options, as indicated by the seating and table service mentioned in the reviews. It is also likely that they offer takeout services, although this is not explicitly stated. The complimentary wonton strips suggest a welcoming service gesture. However, the negative review highlights significant issues with how customer complaints are handled and the lack of resolution provided by the management. The phone number provided, (401) 828-0100 or +1 401-828-0100, can be used for making reservations or placing orders.
Features of Dragon Palace include a diverse menu encompassing both traditional New England-style Chinese dishes and a selection of Japanese sushi. The positive reviewer highlighted specific dishes like the hot and sour soup, old school egg rolls, and shrimp with lobster sauce as being particularly well-executed. The unique "darkest duck sauce" and the dark but not salty fried rice were also noted. The negative reviewer's experience points to potential inconsistencies in food quality, particularly with the sushi and certain Chinese dishes like the teriyaki chicken and fried rice. The fact that the teriyaki chicken was served on a sizzling hot skillet suggests a presentation style for some dishes.
No specific promotional information was mentioned in the provided reviews. Restaurants often have lunch specials, combination deals, or seasonal promotions, but there is no indication of any such offers currently available at Dragon Palace based on this feedback. Food is delicious! Traditional old school New England style Chinese food! Great big restaurant hidden in an office building. Just follow the signs. Once you sit you get complimentary wonton strips with the darkest duck sauce I've had. It looks black in the container. Comes out a dark brown. It is delicious! Hot and sour soup is perfect!!! The balance created with wine and vinegar give it the perfect sour flavors with just the right amount of heat and finished with sesame oil. Seriously one of the best! They still have old school egg rolls. The newer ones are made with bland cabbage. These are made with celery and pork and just the right amount of spice. Perfect! The shrimp with lobster sauce was also spot on. Fresh shrimp in a delicious sauce that balances flavor without being too salty. The fried rice was the darkest I've had without being salty. Overall this is a great restaurant that I highly recommend.
My husband and I decided to try this place tonight because of the good reviews. He ordered sushi and said it was okay, but that the yellow tail and salmon rolls he ordered had “less than vibrant” fish that they hid with spicy mayo. I had teriyaki chicken and fried rice, which came with a salad. The dressing for the salad was a sad, shelf-stable version of the normally delicious ginger dressing. The fried rice was extremely dark, so I thought it would be overseasoned and too salty, but it somehow tasted like nothing. It was really weird - no garlic flavor and not even any soy sauce flavor. The chicken was extremely tough. I had high hopes since it came out on a sizzling hot skillet, but it was inedible. The teriyaki itself was okay flavor-wise. I normally never speak up, but the food was actually so bad that I told the waitress. The waitress sent over the manager, but there didn’t seem to be any communication between the two of them because he just asked us if we needed anything else and then brought us the check. We didn’t even know he was the manager. When the waitress returned, she told us he was the manager and asked if he took anything off the bill (he didn’t). She apologized and said that if she takes anything off the bill, he gets mad at the end of the night. The experience was uncomfortable and weird and the food was really expensive for the low quality. I definitely recommend literally anywhere else.
My wife and I tried Dragon Palace based on the google reviews which are entirely too high. I ordered 3 sushi rolls and an order of sashimi, the waitstaff, while friendly did not know the difference between sushi and sashimi which was a bit of a red flag; the sashimi and tuna rolls were decent however the other two rolls were topped with “spicy sauce” which covered less vibrant fish (salmon and yellowtail) overall the sashimi was the best part of both my and my wife’s meals. My wife ordered teriyaki chicken with a side of fried rice. At first I was worried the fried rice had been drowned in soy sauce and would be inedible, despite the color it was entirely unseasoned and flavorless, her teriyaki chicken was tough and stringy. The waitress said she would see if the manager would take anything off the check and then someone who didn’t identify themself as a manager asked if we needed anything else (nothing about the food). Save yourself the money and purchase grocery store sushi instead.
Dragon Palace’s food is pretty good there Beef Teriyaki is really good and there rice is really good the sesame chicken is pretty dry at least when I had it they have pretty good service the staff is pretty nice and the atmosphere is nice and is okay for kids unless you are at the bar. They are always really busy! About a half hour to 45 minute wait for your food and they do Not deliver l! Which sucks pretty bad!
The young waitress was very attentive. We had chicken with garlic sauce and I ordered Udon soup and it was very good, like miso soup with lots of noodles. I also ordered sushi, Mermaid Roll, it was delicious and paired well with a nice pot of tea.
