About Dong Ting Chun
Welcome to Dong Ting Chun, a Chinese restaurant located at 140 W Valley Blvd #206-207 in San Gabriel, California (zip code 91776). As a part of the Chinese Restaurant category, Dong Ting Chun offers a variety of dishes, with a particular emphasis on spicy options, according to customer feedback. While opinions on certain dishes vary, some items have garnered positive reviews, providing local users with insights into what this establishment has to offer.
One customer shared a mixed experience, noting that while a friend enjoys the restaurant, their own order of a dish at the "very king spicy level" turned out to be excessively salty. This suggests that the spiciness levels at Dong Ting Chun might be potent, and customers ordering at the highest spice levels should be aware of potential alterations to the flavor profile, such as increased saltiness. The reviewer also pondered whether the "original spicy level" might offer a better balance of flavors, which could be a point of consideration for those who prefer spicy food but are wary of overpowering saltiness.
Several operational aspects of Dong Ting Chun were also highlighted in the reviews. Notably, there is a mandatory tea charge of $2.50 per person, regardless of whether tea is consumed or even requested. Additionally, white rice is charged at $3 per bowl. These are important details for potential diners to be aware of, as they will contribute to the overall cost of the meal. On a more positive note regarding accessibility, parking is reported to be easy, attributed to the fact that half of the plaza where the restaurant is located is currently out of business.
In terms of specific dishes, customer feedback presents a range of opinions. The "bean curd with leek" was described as having a "weird spice flavor," which might not appeal to all palates. This suggests that some dishes at Dong Ting Chun might feature unique or less conventional spice combinations. In contrast, the cauliflower dish received high praise, being described as "fantastic" and "highly recommended." Importantly, it was noted that this particular dish is not spicy, making it a good option for those who prefer milder flavors or are looking for a counterpoint to the spicier items on the menu.
The "spicy dry chicken" elicited a divided response. One reviewer found it to have a "weird nutty taste" that they did not enjoy, while acknowledging that others might find it appealing. The dish was also noted for being relatively inexpensive at $10. This highlights the subjective nature of taste and suggests that some of the spicy offerings at Dong Ting Chun might have complex flavor profiles that may not be universally liked but could be appreciated by those with specific preferences. On the other hand, the "spicy cumin lamb" was enthusiastically described as "fantastic" and noted to be "a bit spicy," indicating a successful combination of flavor and heat that resonated positively with at least one customer.
A significant observation across multiple dishes was that "ALL the foods are very greasy." This is a crucial piece of information for potential diners, particularly those who are mindful of oil content in their food. While greasiness can contribute to flavor and texture in some cuisines, it might be a drawback for individuals seeking lighter fare. This is a consistent characteristic reported by a customer and should be taken into consideration.
Based on the overall experience, the reviewer who provided detailed feedback concluded that they would likely return to Dong Ting Chun specifically for the cauliflower and the spicy cumin lamb, as these were the standout dishes for them. However, they also mentioned the possibility of opting for takeout in the future. This suggests that while the food quality of certain items is appreciated, other factors such as the mandatory charges or the greasiness might make dining in less appealing compared to enjoying the food in the comfort of their own home.
For local users considering Dong Ting Chun, the reviews suggest a restaurant that offers some flavorful and well-received dishes, particularly the cauliflower and the spicy cumin lamb. However, it's important to be aware of the potential for high salt levels in very spicy dishes, the mandatory tea charge per person, the charge for white rice, and the reported greasiness of the food. The "weird spice flavor" in some dishes also indicates that the culinary style might have unique elements that may not align with all palates. The easy parking situation could be a convenience for those planning to dine in or pick up takeout orders.
To gain a more comprehensive understanding of Dong Ting Chun's menu and to potentially clarify any questions about their dishes, spice levels, or charges, local users are encouraged to contact the restaurant directly at (626) 288-5918 or +1 626-288-5918. Inquiring about their full menu, preparation methods, and any current promotions could provide a more complete picture of what to expect. Given the varied customer experiences, trying a few of the recommended dishes might be the best way for individuals to form their own opinion of Dong Ting Chun's offerings in the San Gabriel area.

One friend loves it. We ordered very king spicy level and then it was too salty… Maybe the original spicy level tastes better?
They have mandatory $2.50 tea charge per person whether or not you drink or ask for any. They charge $3 per white rice bowl. Parking is easy while half the plaza is out of business. The bean curd with leek has a weird spice flavor. The cauliflower is fantastic and highly recommended. It's not spicy at all. The spicy dry chicken has a weird nutty taste I don't like, but others may enjoy it. It's cheap at $10, though. The spicy cumin lamb is fantastic and a bit spicy. ALL the foods are very greasy. Overall, I'd come back for the cauliflower and lamb, but might just get it to go.
Food ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Service ⭐️ Ambience ❌ Oh my goodness! I have never witnessed a restaurant's decline as stark as this, especially considering how brilliant it once was. Unfortunately, the menu books were found to be extremely sticky and damaged, with pages that were either torn or broken. Prices seemed to have been altered numerous times by either scribbling over the original price or covering it up with stickers. Simply handling the menus left me feeling quite disgusted, and I would have left immediately if not for the purpose of writing this review for a restaurant that was once excellent. Regrettably, the service at the restaurant was subpar, with the waitress simply delivering our dishes and providing no further assistance or attention. Moreover, she continually inquired if we wanted more food, leading to an overabundance of leftovers due to excessive ordering. Despite the unfavorable conditions, the dishes served at the restaurant remained true to typical Human cuisine. For this reason, I am awarding the restaurant two stars. Black Wood Ear with Chinese Yam ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It offered a pleasantly refreshing taste that was satisfying. Sautéed Young Duck ⭐️⭐️ Although the Sauteed Young Duck had an acceptable taste, it was a bit disappointing to have many broken bones chunks within the dish. Additionally, the meat of the duck itself was rather tough and chewy, detracting from the overall experience. Boiled fish with pickled cabbage ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It was delicious. Although the fish wasn't particularly tender, it was certainly fresh, resulting in a flavorful meal. Stewed Pig Feet ⭐️⭐️ While the taste of the dish was satisfactory, it was unfortunately overly chewy in texture. If I had prepared the dish myself, I would have cooked it for a longer period of time to achieve a more desirable, jelly-like texture. Sautéed intestine with pickled string beans ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Sautéed intestine with pickled string beans was flavorful, with the intestine boasting a crispy exterior and a satisfyingly textured interior. Additionally, the pickled string beans were not overly salty, a common issue encountered at other restaurants. Overall, it was a delightful and enjoyable dish. Sautéed Eggplants and String Beans ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It was also quite enjoyable, with a well-balanced and flavorful taste.
Very poor service, just so so taste. Dare to charge tip by themselves. The food took forever to get on the table. We ordered 5 dishes, 30 minutes later we get the first, another 10 for the second, another 5 for the third etc. The taste doesn’t come close to matching waiting period. As someone from Hunan, i can honestly say non of the 5 dishes we order taste decent Hunan cuisine. If anyone who can guess what the dishes in the pic were based on the menu, I’d be very impressed. Due to such experience, I tipped less than 10%, and guess what, as shown by my credit card statement, they went ahead and charged 15%.
The food was good but service was non existent. There's no wait staff. Only one person running the dinning area themselves.
