About Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung, a globally recognized Chinese restaurant renowned for its exceptional Xiao Long Bao (steamed soup dumplings) and other USese specialties, has recently opened a new location at 395 Santa Monica Pl, Santa Monica, CA 90401, USA. This addition to the Santa Monica dining scene offers local users an opportunity to experience the consistent quality and welcoming atmosphere that Din Tai Fung is known for worldwide. Situated in a prime location near the Santa Monica Pier boardwalk and the 3rd Street Promenade, Din Tai Fung provides not just a meal, but a complete dining experience.

The environment at the Santa Monica Din Tai Fung has been described by patrons as friendly and welcoming. This inviting ambiance sets the stage for a pleasant dining experience, making guests feel comfortable from the moment they arrive. One reviewer specifically mentioned truly enjoying their meal and expressed hope for a return visit, highlighting the positive impression left by the restaurant's atmosphere.

The physical space of this newest Din Tai Fung location is noted as beautiful. While one visitor experienced an overcast evening, they could readily envision the entire outdoor seating area being a popular spot on warm, sunny days or balmy evenings, enhanced by cool ocean breezes. The restaurant's proximity to the ocean further adds to its appeal, offering the potential for a delightful al fresco dining experience in a prime coastal location.

The decor of the restaurant is a distinctive feature. One reviewer particularly appreciated the circular XLB steam container theme that is incorporated throughout the main dining area, from the ceilings to the booths. This unique design element pays homage to Din Tai Fung's signature dish and adds a cool, thematic touch to the interior. Furthermore, the restaurant boasts a high ceiling with frosted glass panels, which allows for ample natural light to fill the space, creating a bright and airy ambiance. Although outdoor seating was unavailable due to colder weather during one visit, the reviewer expressed anticipation for returning during lunchtime to enjoy the interior's aesthetic in daylight.

A hallmark of Din Tai Fung across its various locations is the consistency of its food quality, and the Santa Monica branch appears to uphold this standard. One satisfied customer, who was part of a group of five that ordered over 20 dishes, noted that the food looked familiar, attributing this to the consistent preparation and quality that Din Tai Fung is known for. This reliability ensures that diners can expect the same exceptional flavors and presentation that have made the restaurant a global favorite.

The service at the Santa Monica Din Tai Fung has been commended as very good. One reviewer specifically mentioned their waiter, Golan, praising his great smile and attentive service. The fact that the restaurant had only been open since Valentine's Day (February 14, 2025) at the time of the review suggests that the staff is well-trained and focused on providing a positive dining experience even in the early stages of operation.

Regarding dining options, it was noted that Din Tai Fung in Santa Monica is currently operating on a reservations-only basis. This is likely due to the initial high demand following its opening. However, there is promising news for local users who prefer walk-in dining: the restaurant is reportedly working on opening up for walk-ins in April 2025. This anticipated change will make Din Tai Fung more accessible to a wider range of customers, allowing spontaneous visits to enjoy their renowned cuisine.

While the reviews provided do not explicitly mention specific dishes beyond the Braised Beef Noodle Soup and the signature Xiao Long Bao (implied by the decor), the consistency in food quality across Din Tai Fung's locations suggests that other popular items such as their Singapore noodles, crab Rangoon (often found in US Din Tai Fung menus), and various rice and vegetable dishes are likely to be of the same high standard. The Braised Beef Noodle Soup was particularly noteworthy for one diner who appreciated that their first experience with it was pleasantly mild, catering to those who might be sensitive to spice levels.

The location of Din Tai Fung within Santa Monica Place offers convenient access for those visiting the Santa Monica Pier and the 3rd Street Promenade. Diners can easily combine a delicious meal at Din Tai Fung with a day of sightseeing, shopping, or enjoying the beach atmosphere. This prime location makes it an attractive dining option for both locals and tourists alike.

In summary, Din Tai Fung in Santa Monica offers local users an exceptional Chinese dining experience characterized by a friendly and welcoming environment, a beautiful and uniquely decorated space with potential for delightful outdoor seating, consistently high-quality USese cuisine (including their famous Xiao Long Bao and the well-received Braised Beef Noodle Soup), and very good service. While currently operating on a reservations-only basis, the anticipated opening for walk-ins in April 2025 will further enhance its accessibility. Located conveniently near popular Santa Monica attractions, Din Tai Fung is poised to become a favorite dining destination for those seeking an authentic and memorable Chinese meal.

The environment was friendly and welcoming, and I truly enjoyed my meal here. I'm hoping for the opportunity to return. The food tasted great, and I was delighted that my first attempt at the Braised Beef Noodle Soup wasn't too spicy, finding it pleasantly mild.

Their newest store. Beautiful place. Too bad it was overcast with the fog rolling in tonight, but I can imagine the entire outdoor seating area packed on a warm sunny day, or balmy evening, with cool ocean breezes. Prime location. Decor: I love the circular XLB steam container theme throughout the main dining (ceilings and booths.) Very cool. I also love the high ceiling with frosted glass panels to allow natural light. Though it was too cold to sit outside, I look forward to coming back during the day for lunch. Have lunch then spend the day around the SM Pier boardwalk, or 3rd Street.Promenade 1 block away. The food was as consistent as usual. The 5 of us ordered a lot of food. 20+ dishes. See photos. Looks familiar because the food is consistent. The service was very good. Golan was our waiter. Great smile and service. They've only been open since Valentine's Day, and DTF is reservations only right now. But I heard they're working on opening up for walk-ins in. April.

We made our reservation (highly recommend) for Saturday at 6:30pm. We also parked by the structure and it’s best to park at level 5 which leads you directly to the restaurant. Food was impeccable! Our order Cucumber salad: 8/10 Spicy chicken wontons: 11/10 Shrimp & Pork: 10/10 Shrimp fried rice: 10:10 Chicken fried rice: 10/10 Spicy noodles: 10/10

2 stars is only for the food. bland. Not like the original 鼎泰豐 in Taiwan. The XLB missing that kick. Filling was dry and soup tasteless. The fried rice was not even close to the original one. Hot and sour soup also miss that kick. Please make things original as should be. Having tons of customers doesn’t automatically make the restaurant good. Service and Atmosphere is superlative. The only things that are just like in Taiwan. ✌🏻❤️🇹🇼

New location, same good food but the ambience and decor are a step above other locations. The wait times are enormous, so just be ready to waitlist on Yelp and come out a few hours later. We had a 140-180 minute wait at 1pm on a Saturday, which ultimately ended up being a 2-hour wait Food is as good as other DTF, but service was a bit slower as they get used to the new location, but nothing super long. Would recommend their dumplings and fried rice, as well as the chocolate bao for dessert. All of the decor was more on theme with the seats being streamers and eating outside would be a great time No validation, but plentiful and cheap parking in Santa Monica Place
