About Delicia Tropical Cafe

Welcome to Delicia Tropical Cafe, located at 780 Villa St in Elgin, IL. While categorized on our platform as a Chinese Restaurant, Delicia Tropical Cafe specializes in offering a taste of Puerto Rican cuisine to local diners.

Described by one reviewer as a "hole in the wall contender with great food," Delicia Tropical Cafe offers a variety of interesting dishes. This customer, visiting on a Saturday with a sparse crowd, enjoyed their first experience with pasteles (Puerto Rican tamale), appreciating its savory flavor and texture. The tostones, while not traditionally pounded, were also noted as tasty.

Other dishes sampled included the steak jibarito and shrimp mofongo. The jibarito was considered good compared to others, although the accompanying rice was somewhat dry. The mofongo was presented as a bowl with shrimp and gravy, but the shrimp were noted as very small, and the dish was a bit heavy on sodium. Despite these points, the reviewer found the overall food to be tasty, affordably priced, and comforting.

A significant drawback mentioned was the cold interior temperature, making the dining experience uncomfortable. This customer indicated a likelihood of returning when the weather warms up to try more of the cafe's diverse menu.

However, another recent review expressed significant disappointment. The rice was described as raw and flavorless, and the mofongo was deemed not very good, with very small shrimp and an excess of broth over shrimp. This reviewer stated they were "very disappointed," contrasting with a past perception of the restaurant as "one of the best boricua restaurants." On a positive note, they did mention that the surtido (a mixed platter) was very good.

In summary, Delicia Tropical Cafe offers a range of Puerto Rican dishes, including pasteles, tostones, jibarito, and mofongo, with some items like the surtido receiving positive feedback. The pricing is considered affordable. However, recent reviews indicate potential inconsistencies in food quality, particularly with rice and mofongo, and the dining environment may be uncomfortably cold. If you're interested in exploring Puerto Rican cuisine, consider these mixed reviews when deciding to visit Delicia Tropical Cafe. You can contact them at (847) 695-6207 or +1 847-695-6207.

This is a hole in the wall contender with great food and right next to some roach motel. Came here on a Saturday and not dissuaded by the lack of crowd. Ordered the pasteles aka Puerto Rican tamale. First time experiencing it but enjoyed the interesting savory flavor and texture. Also ordered tostones as an appetizer. The tostones do not appear pounded like the ones I’ve had at other places. But they were nonetheless tasty. The other dishes we ordered were steak jibarito and shrimp mofongo. The jibarito was good compared to others I’ve had but the rice that came with it was pretty dry. The mofongo came shaped as a bowl with shrimp and gravy. The shrimps were as small as they can get and was a bit heavy on the sodium. Overall, the food was tasty, affordably priced and comforting. The downside was the cold temperature of the interior that made it uncomfortable to dine. We’ll probably come again when the weather warms up and try the many other interesting dishes this place has to offer.

Food was good but not great. It was just a a little too bland. Puerto Rican food is usually bursting with flavor and it lack that. Alcapurria and papa relleno had a different flavor and the texture was also very different.

The breadcrumbs had a pleasant spice and herb flavor, and the chicken was incredibly crispy.

Used to come here all the time until I moved out of state. Idk what happened if it was a change of owners or cooks but it’s not the same. Bland and flavorless. The only thing that save the dish was the beans. Being the only Puerto Rican restaurant in town, I would hope that it would be better than this
