About D & A Cafe

D & A Cafe is a Chinese restaurant situated at 407 Clement St in the Richmond District of San Francisco. As a local establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, it aims to provide a range of Chinese culinary offerings to the community. Based on recent customer feedback available online, the dining experience at D & A Cafe appears to have both positive and negative aspects that potential patrons should be aware of.

One customer who dined in previously and recently opted for takeout shared a detailed account of their experience. This review highlighted a significant issue concerning the accuracy of their bill. The customer reported being charged $53.80 for a meal they calculated to be $45 before taxes. Upon bringing this discrepancy to the attention of the store owner and several staff members, the customer stated that they were met with yelling in Cantonese, a language they did not understand. The one waiter who reportedly spoke fluent English allegedly chose not to intervene. The staff insisted they were instructed to charge the higher amount, attributing it to post-tax calculations, despite the customer's disbelief in a nearly 20% sales tax in San Francisco. The situation reportedly involved a confusing exchange where the owner initially offered a partial refund and then retracted it multiple times, each time offering a smaller amount.

Subsequently, upon arriving home with their takeout order, the same customer reported another significant issue: a missing main ingredient in one of their dishes. They had ordered fish with bitter melon, but the dish contained no fish. This was noted as a deviation from their past dine-in experiences where order accuracy was not a problem. The customer considered the possibility of this being intentional due to their earlier inquiry about the overcharge but ultimately dismissed it as a potential coincidence, acknowledging their numerous past positive experiences with dine-in orders.

Based on this detailed account, the reviewer explicitly advised against ordering takeout from D & A Cafe. Regarding the dine-in experience, the reviewer mentioned that the food was usually fresh but noted a few instances where the food was not fresh, and complaints were allegedly dismissed. The reviewer concluded that the service was generally unacceptable and expressed uncertainty about recommending the establishment despite acknowledging that the food could be good on occasion and the atmosphere was reasonably quiet. This suggests that while the ambiance might be suitable for some, and the food quality can be satisfactory, there are significant concerns regarding service and order accuracy, particularly for takeout.

In contrast to the lengthy negative review, another customer offered a brief but positive comment. This individual stated that they walked into the restaurant randomly and ordered beef chow fun, which they found to be very satisfying. This suggests that some dishes at D & A Cafe can indeed be enjoyable and meet customer expectations. The stark contrast between these two reviews highlights the potential for variability in the customer experience at this establishment.

Considering the available information, D & A Cafe appears to be a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco's Richmond District that offers a menu including dishes like beef chow fun. While one customer found a particular dish to be satisfying, another detailed a problematic experience involving billing inaccuracies, a confrontational interaction with staff, and an incorrect takeout order. The environment and specific services offered, beyond dine-in and takeout, are not detailed in the provided reviews. Similarly, no information regarding special features or current promotional offers is available.

Given the conflicting feedback, local users considering D & A Cafe might want to weigh the potential for satisfactory food quality against the reported issues with service and order accuracy, especially for takeout. The positive mention of the beef chow fun indicates that the kitchen is capable of producing enjoyable dishes. However, the negative experience raises concerns about billing practices and the handling of customer service issues. Without further information on the restaurant's environment, other services, or any ongoing promotions, it is challenging to provide a comprehensive introduction. Potential customers may want to consider these recent experiences when making their dining decisions for Chinese cuisine in the Richmond District.

In conclusion, D & A Cafe is a Chinese restaurant located on Clement Street in San Francisco. While it has received a positive review for its beef chow fun, a more extensive review detailed significant issues with billing, customer service, and takeout order accuracy. Potential local customers should be aware of these contrasting experiences when considering dining at or ordering from D & A Cafe. Further information regarding the restaurant's ambiance, full range of services, and any special features or promotions is not available based on the provided text.

Disclaimer: I deliberately waited over 24 hours before writing this review as I am trying to write this review as impartially as I can. When we visit the establishment, we normally dine in. However, we figure since we were in a hurry to get home, maybe try their takeout. I probably should, but I typically don’t examine the itemized receipt for accuracy. I thought maybe I will try examining it one time, and behold, it was inaccurate. I was charged $53.80 for a $45 meal before taxes: San Francisco doesn’t have a sales tax that is nearly 20%! When I brought this issue to the store owner and the three waitresses and waiter who were present, instead of issuing a refund of the overcharge, I was yelled at, not that I understand what they were saying, since they were using Cantonese, a dialect which I don’t speak. The only waiter who could speak fluent English, however, has for unknown reasons chosen not to help. The foursome insisted that they don’t calculate the numbers on the receipt, that someone else told them to charge me $53.80 for a $45 meal after tax, so they did. The male store owner in particular insisted that the math isn’t wrong, that a $45 meal should be $53.80 after San Franciso tax, yelling the entire time—although he didn’t calculate the numbers, and that he was told by someone else. Strangely, the store owner suddenly decided to give something back, but then as suddenly decided not to give them back, back and forth a few times, each time giving less and less of the overcharge back. I thought to myself, that it was only about $5 overcharge, so while I don’t want to tip for such bad service (who enjoys paying to be yelled at?), I was just going to let it slide and take my order as soon as it was ready. So when the final dish came, I just walked out of the restaurant, ready to drive home since I live afar. When we got home, we were shocked to find that, the last dish, which was the topmost box, was wrong: I ordered fish with bitter melon but it has not a single piece of fish in it! This has never happened with the dine-in. Someone I was eating with suggested that this can be their retaliation since it was the last dish that was delivered after I inquired about the overcharge, where the store owner was yelling at me. I readily dismiss the possibility: maybe it’s just a coincidence, although to be fair, they have never messed up the order before, during the countless times we were eating there. And the place wasn’t busy that day either but I still refuse to believe that they would do such a thing on purpose. In sum, I would advise not ordering takeout at this place. As for dine-in, usually the food is fresh, but on a few occasions, it wasn’t fresh at all, and when the people I was eating with complained, it was readily dismissed. I guess I should known back then that this establishment doesn’t treat its customers with due respect. In sum, I think the service isn’t acceptable, the food can be good if they visit them on a good day, and the atmosphere is reasonably quiet. I however am unsure if I can recommend this place after this experience.

Great value for takeout. 4 orders for $45 and comes with rice and soup. I used to dine in person occasionally pre-Covid. The place looks a lot more "modern" now.

We went to order food with colleagues today and took it back to the hospital. When we started eating, there were bugs in the chicken wings. So we kindly called the restuant to tell them to be more careful next time, but the owner told us that the chicken wings were sold to them by someone else Someone else sold it to them, so if you want to complain, blame them instead of saying they have no problems. Their attitude is very bad We will never go to such a restaurant again.

Really good Chinese food. Got the four dishes and rice and soup combo and fed the whole family. The soup of the day was amazing. All of the food was a great deal and will keep us well fed for generations. I especially enjoyed the chow fen. Will definitely be going back again to get more of this delicious and cheap food!
