About City Wok

City Wok, situated at 72840 CA-111 W400 in Palm Desert, CA, positions itself within the Chinese Restaurant category, emphasizing its commitment to homemade sauces, a no-MSG policy, and a belief in "Clean" food preparation. According to their website claims, their dishes are made-to-order, suggesting a focus on freshness and the ability to accommodate certain dietary requests. Recent reviews from local and visiting customers offer varied perspectives on their food, service, and ambiance.

One enthusiastic customer expressed a strong affinity for City Wok, highlighting their consistent patronage during drop-off/pickup trips in Palm Desert. They specifically raved about the Honey BBQ Pork, proclaiming it the best they have ever tasted, surpassing that of other establishments. This positive feedback suggests that City Wok may have a standout specialty dish that is particularly popular and well-received. The reviewer also mentioned consistently ordering a double portion to enjoy leftovers, indicating both satisfaction with the taste and generous portion sizes. Their high recommendation suggests a very positive and reliable experience with City Wok.

In contrast, another reviewer, a visitor to Palm Desert for an extended period who was missing their Korean rice cooker and sought out Chinese cuisine, had a more mixed experience. They were initially drawn to City Wok based on its website claims of homemade sauces, no MSG, and made-to-order dishes, hoping for garlic-free options. They noted that the interior ambiance felt more like a "California Club" than a traditional Chinese restaurant, but found the host and servers to be friendly.

This reviewer attempted to order several dishes with a specific request for no garlic, which the restaurant was largely able to accommodate, including a Braised Tofu dish that was off the dine-in menu but available online. However, the Chicken Satay was pre-marinated with garlic and could not be altered. The Steamed and Fried Chicken Dumplings were described as "ok as European dumplings" but lacking the delicacy of authentic Chinese dumplings. A portion of the dumplings with double dough was reported as under-steamed and tough, a preparation issue the reviewer felt would not occur in a reputable Shanghai restaurant. On a positive note, they found the house-made sauce served with the dumplings to be "very pleasant."

The Chicken Satay was a significant surprise to this reviewer. Instead of the expected delicate chicken tenders on skewers, they received four chicken breasts, each on a stick. While the garlic flavor was light at the restaurant, its effects were still noticeable later. The chicken breasts were described as not tough but on the dry side and "BBQ’d too long, burnt like Portuguese BBQ chicken instead of tender and juicy like Malaysian/Thai/ satays." The reviewer speculated that the large size of the chicken pieces necessitated longer cooking times, compromising the texture and flavor profile of a traditional satay. Due to their size, they were not enjoyable as bite-sized appetizers.

Further feedback from this reviewer included the rice being a bit dry, which they attributed to not enough water used in cooking, a texture they personally did not prefer. The Braised Tofu dish was deemed "OK" but not very authentic, and the bamboo shoots within the dish were noted as being exceptionally tough. Despite these criticisms of the food, the reviewer gave their server five stars, praising her friendliness and attentiveness.

The reviewer also contrasted the interior seating area, which they felt had a fast-food ambiance, with the patio, which unfortunately was full during their visit. This suggests that the overall environment of City Wok might vary depending on where one is seated. Lastly, they regretted not trying a half-size option, which they felt would have been beneficial for the large chicken skewers and other dishes, as they ended up leaving a significant amount of food uneaten, anticipating that it would not be enjoyable as leftovers.

In summary, City Wok in Palm Desert appears to be a restaurant with some notable strengths, particularly the highly praised Honey BBQ Pork. Their commitment to homemade sauces and no MSG might also appeal to health-conscious diners. The service, at least in the case of one reviewer's server, can be exceptional. However, other aspects, such as the preparation of certain dishes like the dumplings and chicken satay, the texture of the rice and bamboo shoots, and the overall ambiance of the interior, have received more critical feedback. The experience seems to vary, and individual preferences for texture and authenticity in Chinese cuisine will likely play a significant role in customer satisfaction.

For local users in Palm Desert considering City Wok, it might be worthwhile to try their highly recommended Honey BBQ Pork. Those with specific dietary requests, like garlic-free options, may find them accommodating for certain made-to-order dishes. However, it's also important to be aware of potential inconsistencies in food preparation and to manage expectations regarding the authenticity of certain items. The ambiance of the interior might not suit those seeking a traditional Chinese restaurant setting. If possible, the patio might offer a different atmosphere. As always, individual experiences can differ, and trying a few key dishes might be the best way to determine if City Wok aligns with personal culinary preferences.

We LOVE City Wok. We do drop off/pickup in this mall for our grandchildren who live in Irvine we live in San Luis Obispo, so it's about halfway. We get food from here every time. Everything is delicious. They make the best Honey BBQ Pork, better than any place that we have eaten. We always order a double portion to have leftovers when we get home (sometimes it doesn't make it). If you haven't tried them, I highly recommend you do so!

13 days in Palm Desert and I’m really missing my Korean Cuckoo rice cooker. I researched various Chinese restaurants in Palm Desert and was impressed with City Wok’s website claims: “our sauces are homemade. We never use MSG. We believe in Clean…” Since all dishes are supposedly made-to-order, we felt that we should be able to order something without garlic in the sauce or content. The interior has more of a California Club ambiance than Chinese Restaurant. The host and servers are friendly enough though. We ordered Chicken Satay, Steamed+ Fried Chicken Dumplings. Braised Tofu was in the online menu, but not showing on the dine-in menu, but they agreed to make it for us. Upon request, they made our dishes without garlic, including the braised tofu. The chicken satays were already marinated with garlic and cannot be changed. First to arrive were the steamed fried dumplings which were ok as European dumplings, but not delicate enough as Chinese dumplings. Parts of the dumplings with double dough were under steamed and tough – this would never have happened in a proper Shanghai restaurant as they would have steamed or boiled the dumplings more thoroughly before frying to get the soft & moist but crispy texture. The house-made sauce was very pleasant. The chicken satays were a big surprise, we expected delicate pieces of chicken tenders on skewers, instead, they were four chicken breasts, each on a stick. The garlic was light and not detectable at the restaurant but the garlic effects was still noticeable long afterwards. The breasts were not tough, on the dry side, and BBQ’d too long, burnt like Portuguese BBQ chicken instead of tender and juicy like Malaysian/Thai/ satays. The difference may be in the size of each piece, since they are so big, they would naturally have to be cooked longer. Because they were so gigantic, it was not possible to enjoy them like bite-size appetizer satays. The rice was a bit dry (not enough water) some people like their rice tough, we prefer our rice more steamy & soft. The tofu dish was OK, again, not very authentic, the bamboo shoots were the toughest I've ever had. Our server was a very nice lady and always approached our table with a smile. She alone gets five stars. The inside section where we sat felt like a fast food place – a different feel than the patio. Unfortunately, all the outside tables were taken. One thing I forgot to try was the half size, it would have been a great idea for the chicken skewers and actually everything else as we left half the chicken and tofu as neither of us enjoy this kind of left over Chinese food as it would have been two greasy on the second day.

Hands down, City Wok is my absolute favorite restaurant! I'm a regular, dining here multiple times a week. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and expertly prepared. But what truly sets City Wok apart is the exceptional service - attentive, friendly, and top-notch. I highly recommend this gem to anyone seeking an outstanding dining experience. 10/10 stars, every time!

We frequented the former PD location on CC for years and tried the new (mall) location for dinner this evening. Same great food we've always enjoyed, same outstanding service. Ambiance is very pleasing, better outdoor dining than the former location. Inside was smaller than we expected. NOISY to the point we had a very difficult time communicating with our server throughout our visit. I will say there was a big group close to us who left after we'd been there, and all we would think of is how noisy it's going to be in season. That was a major disappointment to us. The mall parking lot was far more congested than we had expected for 4pm out of season. We were seated near the mall entrance glass wall, and it was enjoyable people watching during our visit. In all honesty we are pretty disappointed in this new location. We kept an open mind through out our visit, and did have an enjoyable walk through the mall after dinner. I'm sure we will be back, but this location falls short of our dining expectations which is difficult to admit as much as we enjoyed the former location. It is worth a try to draw your own conclusion.

It was my first time here. The 'cup' of soup was a big bowl. It was quite delicious, as was all of the food. HUGE servings, more than enough for 2 meals. This is definitely the place to go for this cuisine.
