About Chong Dumpling House
Chong Dumpling House is a Chinese Restaurant located at 13 W Main St in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. As a "dumpling house," it specializes in various types of dumplings and also offers other Chinese dishes, available for both dine-in and potentially takeout/delivery through platforms like Uber Eats and DoorDash.
Customer reviews for Chong Dumpling House present a wide range of experiences. One recent reviewer expressed significant dissatisfaction with their dine-in experience. They described the water as having an unusual earthy taste and noted the absence of ice. They also mentioned a lack of common condiments like soy sauce, dumpling sauce, and chili oil readily available at the tables. This reviewer's experience with the food was largely negative. The wontons with hot sesame sauce were served lukewarm in a tasteless liquid with watery peanut butter instead of peanut sauce, and the wontons themselves were overcooked and fell apart. The pan-fried pork dumplings were described as incredibly tough and likely previously frozen, with a mild dumpling sauce. The shumai was also disappointing, arriving soaking wet and bland with what appeared to be fatty pieces on the minced pork. Overall, this customer found the food to be very bad for a cheap place and stated it was one of the worst meals they had had in a long time, even suggesting heating up frozen dumplings from Trader Joe's as a better alternative.
In contrast, another local reviewer had a much more positive experience, particularly with the fried rice, which they found exceptional and consistently good whether dining in or ordering through delivery apps. They also mentioned the prices being reasonable and recommended the restaurant as a good place for children to experience Chinese food for the first time due to its quality and affordability.
The environment, based on one negative review, seemed basic with a quick and attentive service initially, but lacking in standard condiments on the tables. The other positive review does not provide specific details about the ambiance but focuses on the food quality and value.
Given the contrasting reviews, it appears that experiences at Chong Dumpling House can vary significantly. While one customer found the dumpling dishes and overall quality to be very poor, another local patron highly recommends their fried rice and finds the restaurant to be a good value, especially for families. Customer Reviews
As a few other reviews noted, this place should have more low ratings. It’s really odd. Anyway we went on a Tuesday evening at 6pm. I was hoping to love this place so I kept an open mind. There was one table of two people, and then my mom and I. Service was fast and attentive and we were sat down immediately. That is where the positives unfortunately end. Started off with water that tasted weird, almost like unfiltered Philly tap but … earthier? There wasn’t any ice, which is fine with me but atypical. At the end of the table was one salt shaker, I reached over to another table to grab some soy sauce. No dumpling sauce or chili oil bottles anywhere in the place. Time to order. This is a dumpling house so why not try the dumplings. First up- the wonton with hot sesame sauce. It was served Luke warm, sitting in a nearly tasteless dark brown liquid drenched in watery peanut butter. Not peanut sauce, literal peanut butter. Definitely not spicy one bit. As you can see by the picture, the two “sauces” were pretty separated and looked very unappetizing. The wontons immediately fell apart and not in the good way. It was boiled far too long. My mother grew up in poverty and couldn’t muster the courage to eat more than one. The taste was like eating pasta with peanut butter. not preferable. I didn’t want to spoil my appetite with it so I waited for the next plate with hope. Next came our Pan fried pork dumplings. I’ve had these plenty places, Im aware of this style with that little skirt underneath. It’s usually a delectable- crunchy bottom with a chewy top. These had that evaporated skirt underneath but the whole thing was incredibly tough. Far far beyond overcooked, and felt previously frozen. The dumpling sauce served with it was quite mild. Still was hoping the next plate would be good. Hot and sour soup was next up, it was surprisingly tasty and resembled plenty of other mid tier take out spots in the area. Portion was a nice size. definitely a solid choice. Lastly was the shumai. And sadly was let down again. They came out soaking wet and insanely hot, no warning from the server. Eh that’s alright it’s cheap. the minced pork had these grey fat sacks hanging off them like parasites. They were very bland and tasted like soggy meatballs- which is not far from the average shumai. For a cheap place, this was very bad. My mom doesn’t really get out much but we both left saying “we’ll that was the worst food I’ve had in a long time”. If you’re into dumplings, definitely go to Trader Joe’s and just heat some up in your skillet at home. No clue how this place has been in business for so long.
In this area, one of the best chinese spots to eat at, my first time I got the fried rice, it made me feel like I been missing out on this for years, and then if you DELIVER off ubereats or doordash, it's the same quality, and not expensive by any means. I usually always get the fried rice for 5-6 dollars depending which one, and it hits that spot everytime. If you have children, and want them to experience Chinese Food for the first time, and you live in the area, This jawn right here gone do what you need, for the perfect price.
I love dumplings and have been wanting to try this resturant for a while.. let me say we got many different types and styles to have a dim sum dinner. Was extremely happy with my order the dumplings, buns, spring rolls and egg rolls were very tasty. As a bonus they included hot chili oil
I've been eating here for decades. Sauces are superb. Especially love the eggplant dishes, fish and tofu casserole and the Singapore mai fun.
First time trying this place and got the general tso's lunch special. For this price, definitely can't beat it in this area. The chicken was actual whole pieces of chicken with minimal breading. Egg drop soup was on point too. Would like to try the normal menu items next time.
