About China Wok

Welcome to China Wok, a Chinese Restaurant located at 1533 Potomac Ave, Hagerstown, MD 21742, USA, serving the local community with a range of Chinese cuisine. China Wok offers both takeout and delivery services, aiming to provide convenient options for those seeking Chinese food in the Hagerstown area. The provided phone numbers for placing orders are (301) 797-1584 and +1 301-797-1584.

Based on the available customer reviews, the experiences at China Wok appear to be inconsistent, with one recent review expressing significant disappointment following a long period of patronage, while another offers positive feedback. It is important for local users to consider both perspectives when evaluating this establishment.

One detailed recent review described a highly negative experience with a $60 carryout order for two people, stating that the entire order was discarded after a few bites. The main courses, Szechuan chicken in garlic sauce and Hunan Chicken, were criticized for lacking spiciness despite being indicated as spicy on the menu, and more significantly, for being flavorless. The reviewer, a former long-time customer who had not visited in 8-10 years, expressed considerable disappointment with these dishes.

Further criticism in the same review was directed at the barbecue ribs, which the customer, with experience in cooking pork, believed to be leftovers. These ribs were described as having a taste of "refrigerator age," despite being heavily sauced, and were noted to be very dry, suggesting they had been reheated multiple times. The shrimp toast, a dish the reviewer had previously enjoyed, was described as soggy, excessively greasy, and undercooked, lacking the desired crispness.

Despite this overwhelmingly negative assessment of the food, the same reviewer shared positive memories of past experiences at China Wok, including enjoyable dinners with friends and a particularly memorable server. This server was recalled for her friendly and personalized service, remembering customers, offering dietary advice, and even suggesting surplus kitchen items. The reviewer expressed a sense of loss for this past positive experience and hoped for a return to that level of quality.

Interestingly, the same detailed negative review included a positive note about the delivery service, describing it as "perfect" and "very timeful." The reviewer enjoyed meeting the delivery driver and his assistant and had a pleasant conversation with them. This suggests that while the food quality was severely lacking in this instance, the delivery aspect of their service was commendable.

In contrast to this detailed negative account, another brief review simply stated, "We love their food. I've been going here since we moved in the area. Always a great experience." This positive feedback indicates that some customers continue to have satisfactory experiences at China Wok.

Given these conflicting reviews, it is challenging to provide a definitive assessment of the current state of China Wok's food quality. The significant gap in time for the negative reviewer (8-10 years since their last visit) suggests that there may have been changes in the interim. The stark contrast between the two reviews highlights the potential for variability in food quality or individual customer experiences.

Information regarding the environment of China Wok is not provided in the reviews. The focus is primarily on the food and, to a lesser extent, the service. Therefore, local users seeking information about the restaurant's ambiance or dining area will need to look for additional sources or potentially visit the location if dine-in service is available (though not explicitly mentioned).

The services offered by China Wok include takeout and delivery, as indicated by the reviews. The positive mention of timely delivery suggests that this aspect of their service is reliable. The phone numbers provided facilitate easy ordering for both takeout and delivery. There is no information available about catering services or any specific features beyond the standard Chinese menu items mentioned in the negative review (Szechuan chicken, Hunan chicken, barbecue ribs, shrimp toast).

Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided text. Local users interested in any specials or discounts offered by China Wok would need to contact the restaurant directly using the provided phone numbers.

In conclusion, China Wok in Hagerstown presents a mixed picture based on recent customer reviews. While one long-time customer reported a severely disappointing experience with the food quality of a recent takeout order, another customer expressed consistent satisfaction. The delivery service received positive feedback in the negative review. Information about the restaurant's environment is lacking, and no promotional details are currently available. Local users considering China Wok should be aware of these contrasting experiences and may want to seek more recent reviews or inquire directly with the restaurant about their current food quality and preparation standards before placing an order.

For those in the Hagerstown area looking for Chinese takeout or delivery, China Wok is an option to consider. However, the significant concerns raised in one of the recent reviews regarding the flavor and freshness of several dishes should prompt caution. It might be prudent to inquire about the preparation methods and the freshness of ingredients when placing an order.

The discrepancy between the positive and negative feedback underscores the subjective nature of dining experiences. While one customer continues to enjoy their food, another found it to be extremely unsatisfactory. This highlights the importance of considering multiple sources of information when evaluating a restaurant.

Local residents who have had positive experiences with China Wok in the past may find their recent experiences consistent. However, new customers should be aware of the potential for inconsistent food quality as indicated by the available reviews. Direct communication with the restaurant about their current standards might help in making an informed decision.

Ultimately, the decision to order from China Wok rests on individual preferences and risk tolerance. The convenience of takeout and delivery, along with the positive past experiences of some customers, may be appealing. However, the serious concerns raised in a recent review regarding food quality cannot be ignored and should be carefully considered.

I used to love this place, but admittedly had not been here for 8-10 years. Tonight we ordered $60 of carryout for 2 people. We threw all of it out after a few bites. Main courses were Szechuan chicken in garlic sauce and Hunan Chicken. On the menu both were shown as spicy. Neither one was spicy. But that’s not the worst part. Actually they were flavorless. I was quite in a mood for Chinese tonight, and talked my wife into going along with it, but without a doubt, both of these dishes, disappointed hugely. I also ordered the barbecue ribs. I’ve cooked a lot of pork and I know when I’m being served leftovers. These ribs had the taste of refrigerator age upon them, despite the attempt to cover up with a lot of sauce. They were dry as they possibly could be, evidence they had been reheated a few times. I ordered one of my favorites of all time: shrimp toast. It was soggy and soaked in grease. Now I’m going to admit to you that I like the flavor of the oil that the toast is deep fried in. But this was ridiculous, each piece of shrimp toast was soggy, undercooked, and not anything resembling the crispness that is so delicious with shrimp toast. This was a hard review to write, being that it is a place. I enjoyed so much in the past. I’ve had many good dinners here with good friends, and additionally, there was a server here for a long time who was a joy to have wait on you. She knew you the instant you walked in the door, and she commented Openly and without hesitation about how much you needed to eat, what portions were correct for you, and what you would like or enjoy. She also offered items from the kitchen that somehow needed to be consumed by someone, and she thought you would just be the perfect person to help the kitchen out by taking advantage of something that had misfired. I miss that place. I hope it comes back to that level. It’s going to take me a while to recover from the experience I had today. One additional thing: the delivery was perfect and very timeful. I enjoyed meeting the driver and his young assistant, and they lingered on the porch for a while as we conversed about the gorgeous evening we had.

BUG IN FOOD!!!! I never write a review but this shouldn't go unnoticed. First time ordering from this place. Don't know if someone didn't clean the containers or if it was accidentally mixed in with the food while cooking but Disgusting! For first time impressions, I will not be returning....

Haven't realized how long I've been coming to this place till just now. It's been over 20 years, and they still make some of the best food around town. It's saddens me to read some of these reviews, a lot of them complaining about cleanliness of the place. I don't know when they were here, I don't know what they saw when they were here, but I have never experienced dirt in here. The space is always been clean every time I come in here. Yes, it's not the brightest and well lit looking spot. Yes, some of the lights in the ceiling tiles look like they could use a little spritz of lumens and freshening up. But, no I am never seen dirty or grungy as one reviewer said. Then again, I'm not sure what that review was comparing it to. However, I didn't come here for the ambience or decor. I come here for the delicious food that I've been eating for over two decades. It's hard to find a family owned business still successful in these days, especially after the pandemic that closed many restaurant doors. The simple fact they are still open after two plus decades and a pandemic is a testament to quality food and good service. Because there are certainly no shortage of Asian cuisine competition in Washington county. Many Asian restaurants have opened and closed within that time, but China Wok is still standing, and for good reason. Their customers who have been with them for a long time like myself, come back often because we get good food at a good price and you can't beat that combo. They have all the iconic favorites on the menu, but if there's something that you want and it's not on the menu, chances are they'll make it for you. What more do you want? Seriously! What more do you want?

Didn't know what I wanted tonight, fridge and freezer full and 77 and didn't feel like cooking. Only lived in Hagerstown for 3 years and have ordered from them maybe 10 times, mainly during Covid and food was "good" . Got a shrimp egg roll, over fried bordering on burnt plus a pint of Pork fried rice which had zero flavor, maybe 8 peas, 6 pieces of pork, no carrots or onion or anything else and finally the fortune cookie was stale, door wide open and no dine in customers and no A/C on. If i could give them a "ZERO" I would, waste of money, couple of mouthfuls ... UGH and down the garbage disposal Wasn't worth my time to take back. Heated up sone chili my sister in law made, shread some cheese over it and wash it down with Southern sweat tea and finish everything with a slice of homemade apple pie, everyhing was "delicious" give her a 10 out of 10, fortunate that when I stop over to visit and have dinner with her and my brother I'm always sent home with some great treats, their both very good cooks. Avoid China Wok at all costs or until you see 5 star reviews. I don't like giving bad reviews but I hate seeing people waste their money.
