About China Village
China Village is a Chinese restaurant situated at 1335 Solano Ave in Albany, California, serving the local community with a menu that includes Sichuan specialties. Based on recent customer reviews, the restaurant appears to have a history of popularity, particularly for certain dishes, but recent experiences indicate potential inconsistencies in food quality and significant issues with the service provided.
Information regarding the ambiance or environment of China Village is limited in the provided reviews. One review mentions a past positive experience, suggesting that the dine-in setting was once satisfactory. However, there are no specific descriptions of the decor, atmosphere, or overall comfort of the dining area in the recent feedback. Therefore, it is difficult to provide an objective assessment of the restaurant's environment based solely on the available information.
The service at China Village is a point of significant concern raised by multiple reviewers. One customer explicitly stated that "the servers are mostly fairly rude, making the experience less pleasant." This is a serious issue that can detract significantly from the overall dining experience, regardless of the food quality. Another, more alarming incident involved a server carelessly splashing dirty dishwater, including food remnants, onto a customer and their meal while cleaning a nearby table. The reviewer noted a lack of apology or concern from the server, who simply "looked over and shrugged." This behavior is highly unprofessional and raises serious questions about the restaurant's service standards and staff training.
Following the incident of being splashed with dirty dishwater, the customers understandably decided not to eat their contaminated food and attempted to leave. Despite the server's egregious error, the staff reportedly "tried to insist that we pay!" This reaction further underscores a lack of adequate customer service and problem resolution. While the owner apparently intervened and instructed the counter staff not to charge the affected customers, the entire episode left a deeply negative impression. This incident highlights a severe lapse in service etiquette and customer care.
In terms of food quality, the reviews present a mixed picture. One customer expressed extreme disappointment with the Sichuan crab, a dish they previously enjoyed and for which they frequented China Village. In their recent experience, the crab was described as "so dry" and either "overcooked or cooked from frozen," resulting in the meat sticking firmly to the shell and being difficult to extract. The reviewer likened the experience of trying to eat the crab to that of a "cave man," emphasizing the poor quality and texture of the dish. This significant decline in the quality of a once-favored item is a major concern for patrons who previously relied on the consistency of China Village's offerings.
Adding to the negative dining experience, the same reviewer noted that the only other item they could eat was "stiff old rice" for which they had to pay extra. This suggests potential issues with the freshness and quality of even basic accompaniments. The fact that a customer had to rely on substandard rice after a disastrous crab dish paints a concerning picture of the overall meal quality during their visit.
Despite these serious negative experiences, one earlier comment stated that "the food here is excellent and the fish soup in particular" was noteworthy. This suggests that China Village may have dishes that are well-prepared and enjoyed by some customers. However, this positive feedback is overshadowed by the more recent and detailed accounts of poor food quality and rude service. The inconsistency in food quality, particularly with a signature dish like the Sichuan crab, is a significant drawback for potential and returning customers.
The stark contrast between past positive experiences and recent negative ones indicates a potential decline in the restaurant's standards. The reviewer who experienced the service mishap mentioned that they still go to China Village "sometimes, but not nearly as often as I used to," suggesting a significant erosion of their loyalty due to the poor service. The other reviewer who had the negative experience with the Sichuan crab stated that they would no longer recommend the restaurant, marking a complete loss of a previously enthusiastic customer.
Based on the available reviews, China Village presents a risky dining option for local users. While some dishes, like the fish soup, may be well-received, there are significant concerns regarding the consistency of food quality, particularly with previously popular items like the Sichuan crab. Furthermore, the reported rudeness of the service and the shocking incident of a server contaminating a customer's food highlight serious issues with staff behavior and customer care. Potential diners should be aware of these recent negative experiences before choosing to dine at China Village.
Currently, there is no information available regarding any promotional offers or changes that might have been implemented to address the issues raised in the reviews. Local users considering visiting China Village at 1335 Solano Ave in Albany may want to weigh the potential for enjoying well-prepared dishes like the fish soup against the risk of encountering inconsistent food quality and rude service, as highlighted in the recent feedback. Contacting the restaurant at (510) 525-2285 or +1 510-525-2285 to inquire about recent changes or to express concerns based on these reviews might be a prudent step before making a dining decision.

Customer Reviews
Super disappointed. We love to come here for the Sichuan crab, but it was so dry and either overcooked or cooked from frozen that the meat stuck entirely to the shell. We had to scrape small bits of crab meat from the cracked bits of shell with our finger nails. I felt like a cave man. To add insult to injury, the only thing we could actually fill up on was stiff old rice that we had to pay extra for. I used to love this spot and recommended it often. Not after tonight.
The food here is excellent and the fish soup in particular, unfortunately, the servers are mostly fairly rude, making the experience less pleasant. One time while they were cleaning up one of the tables one of them tossed some of the dishes into a bowl of soup that was on their cart, splashing it all over me and our food, and the woman who did it just looked over and shrugged. We werenโt going to eat our food after having somebody elseโs food, splash all over it and us, so we just got up to leave, and the people tried to insist that we pay! The owner Waved at the people at the counter, indicating not to charge me, but the whole thing was ridiculous. I still go there sometimes, but not nearly as often as I used to.
I been here for long time since I was a kid. The restaurant is Michelin recommend. Flavor is always good and I love all the dishes. Service is good and parking is good.
Authentic food. Service is okay. Pretty clean. Not too busy. Wait time for food was about 15 min Note: Restaurant seems to be under different chiefs, compared to 6 months ago, both quality and food dropped a little.
