About China Star
China Star is a Chinese Restaurant located at 1801 S 77 Sunshine Strip # B7 in Harlingen, Texas, offering local users a place to enjoy Chinese cuisine. Based on the available customer reviews, it appears that China Star features a buffet service, which was the primary focus of the feedback received. These reviews provide insights into the buffet offerings, food quality, and service experienced by recent diners.
One review specifically mentioned visiting China Star for the buffet and expressed significant disappointment with the experience. The customer noted that the buffet had "very limited items" and offered only "one style of sushi." This lack of variety might be a drawback for diners expecting a wider selection typically found in Chinese buffets. Furthermore, the reviewer reported that "Some items were cold," which is a serious concern regarding food safety and quality. The buffet also lacked common features such as a "salad" bar, and the dessert option was restricted to "only one ice cream item per person." Despite these shortcomings, the reviewer did acknowledge that "The staff was very friendly," indicating a positive aspect of the service.
Another customer had an even more negative experience, stating that "Food was not the best. Got home sick from the stomach!🤢 probably ate everyone’s left overs from the buffet." This severe reaction raises significant concerns about the freshness and handling of the food, particularly within the buffet setting. The reviewer mentioned arriving "as soon as it finished," implying they might have consumed food that had been sitting out for a while after the main rush. Despite their hunger, they regretted their decision to stay and eat, labeling it a "Very bad idea." This strongly suggests a poor food quality experience that resulted in illness.
This second reviewer also provided specific negative feedback on certain dishes. They wished they had taken pictures of the "chicken fried rice with mushrooms" which "looked nasty." Additionally, they described the "egg drop soup! 🤮 not good at all!" These specific critiques of common Chinese dishes further highlight potential issues with the food preparation and quality at China Star, at least during their buffet service.
Considering these two reviews, the buffet at China Star appears to have significant shortcomings. The limited selection, cold items, lack of salad bar, and restricted dessert options were noted by one customer. More seriously, another customer reported getting sick after eating from the buffet, with specific complaints about the appearance of the chicken fried rice and the taste of the egg drop soup. While one reviewer did mention friendly staff, this positive aspect seems to be overshadowed by the negative experiences with the food itself.
The reviews do not provide much information about the general environment of China Star beyond it being a place that offers a buffet. There is no mention of the restaurant's decor, cleanliness (beyond the implication of potential food safety issues), or the overall ambiance. Similarly, details about other services, such as takeout or a regular menu (if available in addition to the buffet), are not provided. The focus of the feedback is solely on the buffet experience.
Features that might typically be associated with a Chinese restaurant, such as a wide variety of dishes, fresh ingredients, or specific regional cuisines, are not highlighted in the provided reviews for China Star. Instead, the limited buffet selection and concerns about food quality are the dominant themes.
No promotional information, such as special deals or discounts, is mentioned in the reviews. Local users would need to contact the restaurant directly to inquire about any current promotions or the availability of a regular menu or takeout service, if the buffet experience described in the reviews is a deterrent.
In conclusion, based on the limited but critical customer feedback, China Star in Harlingen, TX, seems to have significant issues with its buffet service, including a limited selection, cold food, and potentially poor food quality leading to illness in one instance. While the staff was noted as friendly by one reviewer, this does not seem to compensate for the negative aspects of the food experience. Local users considering dining at China Star, particularly for the buffet, should be aware of these reported issues. It might be prudent to inquire about the current state of the buffet and whether a regular menu or takeout options are available and might offer a more satisfactory experience. To contact China Star, you can use the phone number (956) 425-2991 or +1 956-425-2991, or visit their location at 1801 S 77 Sunshine Strip # B7, Harlingen, TX 78550. However, given the negative feedback, it would be wise to proceed with caution and perhaps seek more recent reviews or consider alternative Chinese dining options in the area.

We came here for the buffet. We were so disappointed with it. Very limited items. Only one style of sushi. Some items were cold. No salad and only one ice cream item per person. I guess we should have walked out but decided to try it. The staff was very friendly.
Food was not the best. Got home sick from the stomach!🤢 probably ate everyone’s left overs from the buffet. We walked in as soon as it finished. But, we were hungry so stayed. Very bad idea. I wish I had taken pictures “chicken fried rice with mushrooms looked nasty. Oh and forgot to mention the egg drop soup! 🤮 not good at all!
Update: Dumplings are not steamed anymore, new owners fry them. Wish they were steamed as they get hard when fried and left on a buffet. —————————————////———————- Love their food, their steamed dumplings are my favorite! Buffet is back after covid closure.
The food was the most disgraceful thing I had ever had in my entire existence. It was super expensive just for 4 people $76 and a plates that we didn’t even eat. The food was cold, the sweet and sour chicken tasted like fish,, very limited options. My family left very disappointed, first and last time ever going.
This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant. The food had different but delicious flavors. The rice noodles had a really good ginger taste. The buffet is on weekdays from 11a-3p and the food is made in small portions so it's always fresh, and you can taste it. This is the best coconut shrimp I've ever had. The waitress was very attentive and the other staff was also friendly. Parking is also available in the rear of the building.
