About China Star

China Star is a Chinese restaurant situated at 7500 Richmond Rd Suite G in Williamsburg, Virginia. Operating within the Chinese Restaurant category, China Star offers a range of fast food style Chinese dishes and can be contacted at (757) 253-2828 or +1 757-253-2828. Based on recent online customer reviews, the experiences at China Star appear to be quite polarized, with some customers expressing satisfaction while others report significant disappointment.

One reviewer describes China Star as having "one of the best Chinese fast food" in the area, specifically mentioning the quality of their beef, chicken, and fried rice. This positive feedback also highlights the "amazing" crab Rangoon, along with "bug portions" (presumably a typo intending "big portions") and "great prices," culminating in a high personal rating of 9/10. This suggests that some customers have found the food to be of good quality, served in generous portions, and offered at reasonable prices.

However, another, more detailed review paints a starkly contrasting picture of the dining experience at China Star. This customer recounts a particularly negative experience during a meal stop on their way home from Hampton. They ordered two family meals for a group of five, anticipating sufficient food, but found the portions to be "shockingly small." This directly contradicts the previous reviewer's mention of "big portions." The reviewer further states that the prices were "absurdly high," citing specific examples such as $7 for a quart of white rice and $2.30 for a single shrimp roll, which they deemed "completely unreasonable."

In addition to the issues with portion sizes and pricing, this critical review also expresses significant dissatisfaction with the food quality. The shrimp rolls were described as having a "fishy aftertaste" and being "barely filled." The chicken on a stick was noted as being "the only thing that came close to being decent," but even those were described as "tiny kabobs." The reviewer found the lo mein to have an "unpleasant, strange taste," the sesame chicken to taste like a "bland General Tso’s with no spice," and the beef and broccoli to be "completely flavorless and lacked any sauce." The reviewer even stated that they had to add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and MSG to make these dishes "edible."

This negative reviewer expresses bewilderment at the restaurant maintaining a rating above 4.0, suggesting that, in their opinion, China Star deserves no more than a 2.0. They strongly advise others to "save yourself the disappointment and find a better option" for Chinese food in Williamsburg, even suggesting traveling elsewhere if China Star represents the best the area has to offer, which they clearly doubt.

Considering these two contrasting reviews, it is difficult to form a uniformly positive or negative assessment of China Star. One customer experienced what they considered excellent fast food with generous portions and great prices, while another had a severely disappointing experience characterized by small portions, high prices, and poor food quality across multiple dishes. This discrepancy suggests a potential inconsistency in the restaurant's offerings or perhaps different expectations and experiences among customers.

The positive review highlights the fast-food aspect, suggesting that China Star might specialize in quick-service Chinese cuisine. The mention of specific dishes like crab Rangoon as "amazing" could be a point of interest for potential customers. However, the detailed negative review raises significant concerns about value for money, portion sizes, and the fundamental quality and taste of several key menu items, including staples like lo mein, sesame chicken, and beef and broccoli.

For local users in Williamsburg looking for a Chinese restaurant, China Star presents a mixed bag of feedback. While one account suggests a positive experience with tasty fast food, good portions, and reasonable prices, another strongly cautions against dining there due to perceived poor value, small portions, and subpar food quality. Potential customers may need to weigh these contrasting opinions and consider their own priorities regarding price, portion size, and food quality when deciding whether to try China Star.

Given the limited information, it is not possible to definitively assess the environment or services beyond the food itself. The term "fast food" in one review suggests a casual setting focused on quick service. There is no mention of dine-in versus takeout, though the nature of "fast food" often implies a strong takeout component. No specific promotional information is available in the provided reviews. Therefore, local users should be aware of the highly varied customer experiences reported online when considering China Star for their Chinese food needs in Williamsburg.

We stopped here for a meal on our way home from Hampton, and it was one of the worst dining decisions we've made. We ordered two family meals for our group of five, expecting ample food, but it was far from enough. Normally, a single family meal suffices at most restaurants, but here, the portions were shockingly small. On top of that, the prices were absurdly high—$7 for a quart of white rice and $2.30 for a single shrimp roll, which is completely unreasonable. As for the food quality, it was incredibly disappointing. The shrimp rolls had a fishy aftertaste and were barely filled. The chicken on a stick was the only thing that came close to being decent, but even those kabobs were tiny. The lo mein, sesame chicken, and beef and broccoli were inedible. The lo mein had an unpleasant, strange taste, the sesame chicken tasted like a bland General Tso’s with no spice, and the beef and broccoli was completely flavorless and lacked any sauce. We had to add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and MSG just to make it edible. It's baffling how this place maintains a rating above 4.0. Honestly, it deserves no more than a 2.0. Save yourself the disappointment and find a better option if you're looking for decent Chinese food in Williamsburg. Do yourself a favor and travel elsewhere, if this is the best Williamsburg has to offer!

Even though the menu doesn't offer much for vegetarians, almost anything can be substituted with tofu, and made without oyster and fish sauce. All you have to do is ask. The chick at the register is sweet, funny and her English is very easy to understand (no one wants to believe that's important to them, but it is). They have 4 tables for dining, lol, that's it for atmosphere.

If I had to guess, this place is using gutter oil. It was good food at one point but now everything tastes tainted. Will not be spending money here again.
