About China Star

China Star, located at 5128 N Roxboro St #1 in Durham, North Carolina (zip code 27704), serves as a local Chinese restaurant offering a range of Chinese-American cuisine. They can be contacted at (919) 477-7779 or via their mobile number +1 919-477-7779 for inquiries or to place orders. Operating under the platform category of "Chinese Restaurant," China Star aims to provide familiar dishes and services to the Durham community.

Understanding the local dining landscape involves considering the history and recent experiences of establishments. China Star appears to have a long-standing presence in Durham, with at least one customer indicating a family history of patronage spanning many years. This suggests a deep connection with the local community and a history of providing Chinese food to residents.

One enthusiastic review highlights a very positive and long-term relationship with China Star. The customer speaks of the family working at the restaurant as being akin to their own family, indicating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, at least from their perspective over the years. They specifically praise the garlic chicken with pork fried rice as a standout dish, describing it as "🔥" and stating they have never found anything on the menu they disliked. A notable detail mentioned is their preference for how China Star cooks broccoli with the chicken, rather than steaming it separately, suggesting a unique preparation style that this customer appreciates. Overall, this review portrays China Star as a beloved and consistently satisfying local Chinese restaurant.

However, another more recent review presents a contrasting perspective, suggesting a potential shift in the restaurant's quality. This customer stated that China Star is "Not as good as it used to be." They detailed their recent order of "human chicken" (likely a typographical error and meant to be a specific dish name, perhaps "Hunan chicken" or similar), noting that the rice was dry and the sauce was excessively thick. Furthermore, they felt the price was a bit higher compared to other restaurants offering similar dishes and quantities. The egg drop soup was also criticized for being less tasty and thicker than usual. This reviewer concluded by stating their preference for another local Chinese restaurant, Bamboo House, indicating that their recent experience with China Star was disappointing.

Considering these two reviews, China Star seems to have a history of strong positive reception within the community, fostering long-term customer loyalty. The mention of a family-run aspect often contributes to a more personal and community-oriented dining experience. The specific praise for the garlic chicken with pork fried rice suggests these might be signature dishes worth trying. However, the more recent feedback indicates a potential decline in food quality, with specific issues raised about the rice, sauce, and soup, as well as concerns about pricing relative to quality. This suggests that while China Star may have a strong foundation, recent experiences might be less consistent.

As a Chinese restaurant, China Star likely offers a range of standard Chinese-American dishes. Based on the positive review, garlic chicken and pork fried rice are certainly on the menu and are well-regarded by at least one long-time customer. A typical Chinese restaurant menu in this category would also include:

  • Appetizers: Such as spring rolls, egg rolls, dumplings, and possibly crab Rangoon.
  • Soups: Including egg drop soup (which received a negative comment in one review), wonton soup, and hot and sour soup.
  • Main Entrees: A variety of chicken, beef, pork, and seafood dishes prepared with different sauces and vegetables. The mention of "human chicken" (potentially Hunan chicken) suggests a diverse selection of regional or style-specific dishes. Other common options include General Tso's chicken, sweet and sour chicken, beef with broccoli, and various stir-fried combinations. The positive review also highlights a specific preparation style for broccoli served with chicken.
  • Noodles and Rice: Including options like fried rice (with various proteins), lo mein, and chow mein. One review specifically mentioned dry rice, indicating this is a dish they offer.
  • Vegetable Dishes: A selection of vegetable-based dishes for vegetarian customers or as side options.

The provided information does not offer any specific details about the environment or ambiance of China Star. As a local, potentially family-run establishment with a long history, it might offer a casual and familiar dining space for those who choose to eat in, though the reviews primarily focus on the food quality for takeout. The mention of a close relationship with the family working there suggests a personal touch that might extend to the dine-in experience, if available.

Similarly, there is no promotional information included in the provided text. Local Chinese restaurants often offer lunch specials, combination meals, or discounts for certain order amounts or days of the week. Without this information, we cannot comment on any current promotions at China Star. In conclusion, China Star in Durham, NC, is a Chinese restaurant with a history of positive reception and a loyal customer base, with dishes like garlic chicken and pork fried rice being particularly praised. The family-run aspect may contribute to a welcoming atmosphere for some. However, recent feedback suggests a potential decline in food quality and concerns about pricing. My family has been coming here since I was little , the family who works here might as well be family🤣. The garlic chicken with pork fried rice is 🔥, I've never found something i haven't liked there. Plus I love how the broccoli is cooked with the chicken instead of steamed. My favorite Chinese restaurant yet!

Not as good as it used to be. I ordered the human chicken. Rice was dry and human sauce was very thick. Price was a bit higher than other restaurants offering the same dish and quantity. The egg drop soup was not very tasty and a bit thicker than usual. Bamboo House is much better in my opinion.

I love to eat food here. The food taste amazing and I'm a picky eater when it comes to Chinese food. I recommand the chicken lomain with fried rice. I come here like once every 2-3 weeks the eggrolls here are good but the lomain is the best. If your planning to come here i recommand calling and placing your food for pickup in advanced because they get pretty busy especially during rush hours. Honestly ill give it aaaaa 8/10!

I frequent this place when I can, and I'll explain that more in a moment. I call in my order and they usually have it ready very quickly. I usually get appetizers that include egg drop soup, which is great, teriyaki chicken skewers, which are awesome, and the shrimp egg roles, which are some of the best I've ever had and I usually have to resist ordering a million of them. As far as an entree goes, I usually get lo mein of some kind or pepper steak, among other items. The food is always fresh, cooked really well, and just so freaking delicious. It's not the hot, greasy garbage most places serve up as takeout. I ask for some modifications, such as adding broccoli or getting my entrees extra spicy, and they always oblige. I never have to guess if they've made the modifications, as you can see in the photo of my extra spicy pepper steak with added broccoli. The cost is still super, super reasonable even with rising prices everywhere. I'd highly recommend trying this place out. The only knock I have on this restaurant is that they're super wonky with their hours. I believe they have defined hours on their menu, but I feel like they're always randomly closed. I'm not sure why that is. I believe it started during the pandemic, which makes sense. It has somewhat of a chick-fil-a effect of making me want it more lol. There's no voicemail, so if they aren't there the phone just rings perpetually. But, even with that it's still somewhere I would definitely recommend getting takeout at!
