Based on recent customer reviews, the experiences at China Star appear to be quite polarized, with some patrons expressing significant dissatisfaction while others have had overwhelmingly positive encounters. One customer shared a particularly negative experience over two visits. During their first visit, they reported feeling ignored by the front staff who were preoccupied with their phones, contrasting their treatment with that of a later-arriving customer who received preferential service. This reviewer also noted that only one person was cooking and felt that the front staff could have been more helpful.
On a subsequent visit, this same customer reported being charged for condiments like hot oil and sweet and sour sauce, which they found unusual. They also described an interaction where they felt the staff member exhibited a negative attitude after they declined to pay for the sauce, followed by the staff speaking in another language to the cook, which the reviewer interpreted as being about them. Regarding the food, this customer was highly critical, describing the low mein as "horrible way overcooked expensive noodles" with "pork tasted old." The General Tso's chicken was deemed so inedible that they discarded it without even offering it to their dog. This reviewer concluded by strongly recommending another Chinese restaurant in downtown Kansas City, despite the longer drive, and expressed a strong aversion to returning to China Star, advising others to avoid it unless they have "poor taste."
In stark contrast, another customer had an exceptionally positive experience, summarizing it in one word: "WOW." They even suggested that the restaurant should change its name to "China FIVE Stars." This reviewer described taking a chance on what they perceived as a "quant hole in the wall" located close to their home and expressed immense gratitude for doing so. They ordered a lunch special priced at just under $10, consisting of Roast Pork with Broccoli and Fried Rice, accompanied by a side of Egg Drop Soup. They were impressed by the speed of service, receiving their food in under five minutes.
This positive reviewer lauded the quality and taste of each component of their meal. They found the pork to have a "nice tender texture" and to be "cooked to perfection," the broccoli to be "fresh," and the fried rice to be a "joy." The sauce was particularly noteworthy, described as "pure bliss." Even the egg drop soup, which initially appeared "uncharacteristically white" and made them "a bit skeptical," turned out to be "absolutely scrumptious" and, notably, lacked the excessive saltiness they had experienced at other local Chinese restaurants.
This customer concluded by describing their experience as "absolutely wondrous" and expressed strong anticipation for their return, offering a direct "Thank you, China Star!" This review paints a picture of a restaurant that, at least in this instance, provided excellent food, fast service, and a pleasant overall experience.
Given these two highly contrasting reviews, it is challenging to form a definitive overall impression of China Star. It appears that there may be inconsistencies in both the quality of food and the level of customer service provided. While one customer experienced significant issues with food quality, pricing of condiments, and perceived rudeness from staff, another found the lunch special to be outstanding in terms of taste, quality, speed of service, and value.
The positive review highlights the appeal of China Star's lunch specials, particularly the Roast Pork with Broccoli and Fried Rice, and the Egg Drop Soup. The speed of service was also noted as a positive aspect. The reviewer appreciated the fresh ingredients, the perfect cooking of the pork, and the exceptional taste of the sauce and the soup (specifically its lack of excessive salt).
Conversely, the negative review raises serious concerns about the quality of certain dishes like the low mein and General Tso's chicken, as well as issues with being charged for standard condiments and experiencing unprofessional customer service. The discrepancy in treatment between customers was also a significant point of criticism.
There is no information provided in these reviews about the environment or ambiance of the restaurant itself. Both reviews focus primarily on the food and the service received.
Similarly, there is no mention of any specific promotional offers or discounts currently available at China Star. Customers interested in learning about any specials would need to contact the restaurant directly.
In conclusion, China Star in Parkville, MO, appears to be a Chinese Restaurant that elicits strongly contrasting opinions from its customers. While one patron had a remarkably positive experience with a lunch special, praising the food quality, speed of service, and overall value, another reported significant issues with food quality, unexpected charges for condiments, and unprofessional customer service. Potential customers may want to consider these differing perspectives when deciding whether to dine at China Star. If you are looking for a quick and potentially delicious lunch special, particularly the Roast Pork with Broccoli and Fried Rice, you might have a positive experience. However, it is also prudent to be aware of the reported inconsistencies in food quality and customer service.

Dared to try second time. First time I was ignored lady up front playing on phone, guy walks in well after me got 5 star treatment. Only one guy cooking she could been helping instead of phone. Second time charged for hot oil! Never in my life been charged for hot oil or sweet and sour. Had bit of an attitude for declining pay for sauce then started speaking Asian I know it was about me to the cook. The low mein was horrible way overcooked expensive noodles pork tasted old I also ordered general tso went straight trash I didn't try feed it to my dog. China feast downtown is hands down best Chinese just bit of a drive. I will drive next craving I have but after today it be long while. The website has nerve keep throwing add a tip !! Don't bother with this place keep it moving unless you have poor taste then give it a good review like all the other no taste riss Lakers. As you were
One word: WOW. These guys should change their name to China FIVE Stars. Took a chance on this quant hole in the wall just a few minutes from home, and I’m so thankful I did. Lunch special was just under $10 for a bowl of Roast Pork with Broccoli and Fried Rice, with a side of Egg Drop Soup. Food was out to me in less than five minutes. The pork had a nice tender texture and was cooked to perfection, the broccoli was fresh, the fried rice was a joy, and the SAUCE… my GOD. Pure bliss. Egg drop soup had me a bit skeptical with its uncharacteristically white color, but it too proved absolutely scrumptious, and it also lacked the high saltiness of other Chinese restaurants I’ve visited in the area. What an absolutely wondrous experience. I can’t wait to come back. Thank you, China Star!
Wow. Today was our first visit to China Star and we will most definitely be back. The egg drop soup was delicious, as were the egg rolls, and my shrimp lo mein was flavored nicely and the shrimp was done perfectly. Everything tasted so fresh.
Got take out tonight and everything was great! The portion sizes are huge! We are visiting family for the holiday's from Michigan and wanted Chinese. This place did not disappoint!
New restaurant for me and I have to say I am very impressed. All of the food I ordered was delicious and fresh. The service was friendly, and the restaurant was clean and neat. I ordered the chicken with almond and was surprised that the chicken was batter-fried and then stir fried with the sauce, vegetables and almonds. I’ve never had it batter-fried and served like this. However, I LOVED it and actually now think that I prefer it this way. It added texture and a nice flavor that worked perfectly with the almond. I also ordered the shrimp fried rice and an egg roll and both were amazing. After some recent bad experiences at other restaurants (due to two reheating food past safe dates), I was hesitant to try somewhere new. I’m so glad I picked China Star! I would recommend this place to anyone in the KC area. It was such a good meal and I will definitely be back. Thank you!!
