About China Star
Welcome to China Star, a Chinese restaurant located at 911 E 85th St in Kansas City, Missouri, operating within the Chinese Restaurant category. Based on recent customer reviews, China Star presents a somewhat polarized dining experience. While one customer raves about a specific appetizer, others have reported significant issues with the food quality, menu accuracy, service style, and even basic amenities like water. This mixed feedback suggests that local users considering China Star should be aware of both the potential highlights and the reported drawbacks.
One enthusiastic reviewer, identifying as a lover of Chinese food, proclaimed that China Star serves the "best" crab rangoon out of approximately ten Chinese restaurants they have visited. They specifically praised the crab rangoon for its "thick cheese" and "crispy rind," indicating a preparation that stands out from the competition. This customer enjoys the crab rangoon so much that they make it a point to order it with every meal, suggesting it is a signature item and a potential draw for other crab rangoon enthusiasts.
However, another customer's experience was markedly different and largely negative. This reviewer ordered the General Tso’s chicken, noting that the menu picture displayed the dish with "a halo of broccoli." Surprisingly, the dish was served without any broccoli. This discrepancy between the menu representation and the actual food served raises concerns about the accuracy of their menu and potential disappointment for customers expecting certain accompaniments.
Furthermore, this reviewer encountered an unusual policy regarding beverages. When they asked for water, they were informed that the restaurant would only sell bottled water, a practice they found unprecedented in their experience at other restaurants. This mandatory purchase of bottled water could be an unexpected cost and inconvenience for diners.
The service style also differed from typical dine-in experiences. Despite being seated in a booth, the customers were "called" to pick up their food, which was packed in styrofoam containers and placed in a bag. This suggests a service model that leans heavily towards takeout, even for those dining inside the restaurant, potentially detracting from the traditional sit-down experience. The reviewer found this unusual and did not elaborate on whether utensils or other dine-in necessities were provided at the table or upon food pickup.
The most significant complaint from this reviewer concerned the quality of the General Tso’s chicken itself, which they described as "unbelievably tough" and "hardly chewable." They speculated that the chicken might have been deep-fried previously and then refried after they placed their order, resulting in an unappetizing texture. This serious criticism of a main dish is a major point of concern for potential customers considering ordering this or possibly other fried items.
Based on their overwhelmingly negative experience, this reviewer concluded that they would only recommend China Star to their "ex-spouse," indicating a high level of dissatisfaction with the food, service, and overall dining experience. This strong condemnation serves as a significant warning for prospective patrons.
The contrasting reviews paint a picture of inconsistency at China Star. While the crab rangoon appears to be a standout item that some customers highly enjoy, other aspects of the restaurant, including menu accuracy, beverage policy, service style for dine-in customers, and the quality of at least one main dish (General Tso's chicken), have been criticized. This lack of consistency makes it difficult to form a definitive opinion without further information or more balanced feedback.
Details about the environment of China Star are not provided in these reviews. As a local Chinese restaurant, it likely offers a dining area for customers who wish to eat on-site. However, there is no mention of the decor, cleanliness, or overall ambiance. Local users who value a particular dining atmosphere may need to visit the restaurant or seek additional reviews to gain insight into the environment.
In terms of services, China Star offers both takeout (implied by the packaging of the dine-in order) and dine-in options. However, the service model for dine-in customers, requiring them to pick up their own food packed for takeout, is unconventional. The limited interaction with waitstaff beyond taking the order and the mandatory bottled water policy are also notable aspects of their service. The phone number provided, (816) 822-8899 or +1 816-822-8899, can be used to place takeout orders or inquire about any clarifications regarding their dine-in service and policies.
A potential feature of China Star is their highly praised crab rangoon, which seems to be a unique and well-loved item. However, the issues reported with menu accuracy (missing broccoli), food quality (tough General Tso's chicken), and unusual service practices are significant drawbacks. The mandatory bottled water policy could also be seen as a negative feature for some customers.
Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided reviews. Local users interested in any special offers or promotions at China Star are advised to contact the restaurant directly. Given the mixed feedback on food and service, it might be prudent to inquire about the preparation of specific dishes or any guarantees of customer satisfaction when placing an order.
Located at 911 E 85th St, Kansas City, MO 64131, USA, China Star is situated in Kansas City. The limited and conflicting feedback makes it challenging to provide a strong recommendation. Local users who are particularly fond of crab rangoon might be tempted to try it based on the positive review. However, they should also be aware of the potential for issues with other dishes, menu discrepancies, unusual service, and the mandatory bottled water policy reported by another customer.
In conclusion, China Star in Kansas City, MO, is a Chinese restaurant that has received both high praise for its crab rangoon and significant criticism for other aspects of its food and service. The unusual dine-in service model, mandatory bottled water, inaccurate menu representation, and reports of poor food quality on at least one dish are serious concerns. Local users should consider these mixed reviews carefully when deciding whether to patronize China Star. If the highly rated crab rangoon is appealing, it might be worth trying, but it would be wise to inquire about other dishes and policies beforehand. Contacting the restaurant directly may provide more clarity on their current practices and any promotions they might offer.

I love Chinese food and his carb rangoon is the best out of the 10 or so Chinese restaurants I've eaten at. Thick cheese, crispy rind, whatever I order, I have to bring it with me. I'm sure anyone who eats it will come back for more.
They have lots of pictures showing their plates of food. I ordered General Tso’s. It showed it with a halo of broccoli but they served in with no broccoli! We asked for water and they would only sell us bottled water, my first in a restaurant! We were sitting in a booth and she called us to pick up our food packed in styrofoam in a bag! My General Tso’s was unbelievably tough. Hardly chewable! I believe it had been deep fried previously and dumped back in the fryers after I ordered it! I would only recommend this to my ex-spouse!
I got combination fried rice from here and my meat (chicken and beef) were not cooked. They were gummy and chewy texture. I informed the lady at the counter and asked if they could cook it longer and was basically told to eat the uncooked meat and get over it. I can’t even pull the meat apart with my hands. Do not recommend!
The first choice for simple meals. Cheap and fast. The fried rice tastes good. Crab horn is very unique and very different from other Chinese restaurants.
The order that I've placed, literally since I was a kid, and at this (janky joint) more than enough times to notice this order gave me an ALLERGIC REACTION... THESE ARE ALL FACTS! Spicy Shrimp fried rice - xtra Egg, Spring Rolls & Butterfly Shrimp (rice and spring rolls both cold, butterfly shrimp undercooked) had my tongue TINGLING and upper lip SWOLLEN, I took pictures and requested a refund... W/o seeing the pic' I was denied, and told (I) was responsible, for not specifying about my allergies in dishes that's NEVER given me any worries🤢🤮
