About China Max Dumpling House
China Max Dumpling House is a Chinese Restaurant located at 4698 Convoy St c101, San Diego, CA 92111, USA. You can contact them at (858) 256-0260 or +1 858-256-0260.
This restaurant is a re-opening of a previous establishment named China Max that had burned down, and there seems to be local excitement for its return. One customer who visited during lunch noted that there was previously an all-you-can-eat (AYCE) option available during dinner, but it had ended on March 27th.
A group of six shared multiple dishes. The chicken dumplings in hot chili oil were generally well-received for their texture and taste, though one person suggested they could be spicier. The sweet and sour pork ribs were described as tender and flavorful, and the noodles with pork chop were considered good, with chewy noodles and a crispy, not over-fried pork chop. However, the soup dumplings and pan-fried pork buns were rated as just okay, and the cucumber salad was disappointing due to insufficient marination and a plain spicy sauce.
It was also noted that several menu items were unavailable during one customer's visit. This reviewer felt that while it might be worth trying, it was not their top choice, as they found the taste and portion sizes not worth the price.
Another customer expressed confusion about the hype surrounding the restaurant. They found the crab XLB to be dry with no broth and tasting like canned crab, and the pork siu mai appeared old with a strange texture. While the chicken dumplings in spicy oil were acceptable, they were not considered special. On a positive note, the servers were described as nice and helpful in answering questions, and the availability of Tsingtao beer was appreciated.
For local users in San Diego, CA, China Max Dumpling House offers a variety of Chinese dishes, with a focus on dumplings. Customer experiences have been mixed, with some dishes like the chicken dumplings in hot chili oil and sweet and sour pork ribs receiving positive feedback, while others like the crab XLB and cucumber salad were disappointing. Some reviewers have also raised concerns about price relative to taste and portion size, as well as the availability of certain menu items. The service staff appears to be friendly and helpful.

I’ve never been to China Max before it burned down but it seems like ppl are excited for it to re-open. I went during lunch before I was told there’s an AYCE option. Unfortunately it was only during dinner and it ended on 3/27. Anyway, six of us ordered multiple dishes to share. Chicken dumplings in hot chili oil were great. I liked the texture as well as the taste (although a bit more spicy would be better). Sweet and Sour pork ribs were tender and flavorful. Noodles with Pork Chop were good. The noodles were chewy in a good way and pork chop was crispy and not over fried. The soup dumplings and pan fried pork buns were ok. The cucumber salad was disappointing as they were not marinated long enough. The spicy sauce on top was plain. There were many items not available during our visit. I think it’s a good place to try it out but not my go to place. The taste and the portion are not worth the price.
Not sure what the hype is. Crab XLB were dry with no broth in them and they tasted like canned crab. The pork siu mai looked old and had a weird texture. Chicken dumplings in spicy oil were ok but nothing special. Servers were nice and answered questions which is a plus. So glad they had Tsingtao to wash my disappointment away!
I'll just start with there is a typo in their claim, "BACK & BETTER THAN EVER". Although they are BACK, they are "BADDER" (WORSER). The owner is different and so is the chef (like so many have already mentioned). Then I just wonder, why keep the same name? The quality for the price is terrible compared to other nearby places. Don't know why I kept seeing $25 for AYCE when it came out to be $30 for AYCE not including the tax or tip yet. There are MUCH MUCH better places to eat in Convoy. Shouting MUCH because it's so loud in the restaurant with the music playing (in certain areas). It feels like a club, but there are also MUCH better clubs than this. We avoided their soft opening hoping it would get "better" based off of the reviews. I came here with my colleagues and we decided to wait in their 2 hour+ line. Eventually at 7pm, an hour they stop seating people, they announced that they would stop seating at 8pm. By that time, we have already waited 2 hours. I wish they told us earlier while we were in the line. What I was kind of surprised by was the ostentatious preferential treatment. One of the people standing at the end of the line knew one of the waiters. Jon/John(?) let them skip the line and that party went upstairs. That guy made it obvious and even gave the server a call. Although it doesn't technically take a "table" away from someone, it does take away some of the food that people waited 2 hours+ in line for (just because you know an employee). Then come back another time. I also found out that if you are in the second round of the 90 minute interval, you are left with fewer options and most of the food has run out by then. What they should have done is limit on certain dishes. Like pecking duck (2 max per person) or something similar. 90 minutes is also not enough time if people spend half that time ordering/waiting for their food. I was not a fan of their XLB. There was no soup in the three rounds we ordered. Not sure why they have a hole at the top, maybe that's where all the soup evaporated to. The XLB potstickers we ordered had some soup. I would recommend that as well as the sesame chicken wontons. Definitely not worth the wait and hype. I did notice that they love to hype themselves up. There's no waiting list or reservation, there's a physical line along the curb in the cold. This is not very ADA friendly. The building is surrounded by windows, so you can see inside and out. Some people eating would be taking their time (90 minutes, which they are entitled to) but with no food on their tables. Some would even be pointing and laughing. Four seaters would have two people occupying the tables. Some inside would be laughing at those outside in the cold and those outside would be staring down the ones inside. This was not a very positive experience nor a positive atmosphere. A lot of negativity here. Highly unlikely I'm coming back here for their food. After a two hour+ wait, of course people are going to say the food is amazing if they are starving. What they could have done is offered coupons for those who didn't make the cut or offered some sort of incentive to come back to try their store again while it's not AYCE. BUT shout-out to that one little dude server who kept being the receptionist. That is a VERY tough job! You did great, never saw you stop running around. Also shout-out to Natsuki for great service. Only one that I saw who wore a name tag! But the other girl with the lantern pants and blonde hair, I was not a fan. She put the receipts on my food and she kept bringing me repeat orders. Thank you to the guy with tattoos on his neck for correcting her mistake and saying there was an error with the system. Side note: bathroom is pretty clean. They have trash bins. Not too fancy. But surprisingly clean for the amount of people that go through it. Not an environmentally friendly place. Lots of food waste and they don't seem to recycle. Saw all the bottles and cans in the trash where they threw everything else
Waited in a long line because 3 days promotion of all you can eat. The food was okay, but a lot was out , even though you were in the first round. The system were error end up we got the same thing for three or more times.
Reopened. Haven't been to the old China Max but this does not feel authentic. Peking duck wrap is only available in cold. The food feels pricey. Menus is two pages. Also the phone number on the business page is not owned by the current owner and is incorrect. This implies a transfer of ownership maybe.
